Title: Poker In Films!
Post by: Complimentary on January 22, 2006, 03:07:33 PM
It’s a little known fact but many of Hollywood’s greatest movie quotes originated in Poker rooms across Europe & the world. Here are some famous conversations and statements that were overheard and plagiarised in screenplays in some of the most popular movies ever made and where they first originated:

‘You’re gonna need a bigger boat.’ As said by Tony G to Surinder Sunar during their heads up battle in the 2004 WPT event in Paris. Tony turned over a full house, Aces over Kings to defeat Surinder’s Kings full. The line was later used by Steven Spielberg in his epic film Jaws.

‘He’s not the Messiah; he’s a very naughty boy’ Phil Ivey’s mum following  press intrusion after Phil arrived two days late home following his Monte Carlo Millions win. Copied by Monty Python and used in the Life of Brian

‘I’ll be back!’ Dan Harrington after his exit from the final table of the 2003 WSOP. Lo and behold he was, and made the final table in 2004. This inspired Arnold Schwarzenegger to use the line in his movie The Terminator.

‘Here’s Johnny!’ Johnny Chan announcing his arrival at the final of the 1988 WSOP.
Overheard by Jack Nicholson and used in his film The Shining.

Following his bracelet win at the 2005 WSOP Brian 'the Rookie' Wilson announced to the table ‘It’s been emotional.’ Inspiring Vinnie Jones to use the line in the film Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

‘Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.’ Phil Hellmuth to Toto Leonidas during their famous altercation during the 2003 US Poker Championships. Copied by Judy Garland during the opening scene in the Wizard of Oz.

‘You gotta ask yourself…Do ya feel lucky? Well do ya…Punk!’ Tony G again, to an opponent on the way to winning last years European Poker Championships at the Vic. Clint Eastwood was on the rail and used the quote in his movie Dirty Harry.

‘Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.’ Phil Hellmuth accepting a particular bad beat at last years WSOP. Clark gable was impressed enough to include the line in the epic Gone with the Wind.

And finally – Julian Thew and Tony Kendall were discussing a particular play at last years Master Classics of Poker in Amsterdam. Jules uttered; there’s a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you." Tony just smiled thinking to himself Julian had overplayed his Pocket Tens, meanwhile Samuel L Jackson, playing on the next table remembered the quote and used to great notoriety in his movie Pulp Fiction.

Anyone know anymore

I remember this one from playing at the Cincinatti Club only to then hear it in Braveheart.

I have the boat sevens full of eights. My opponent has Quad eights.

I said. "The Lord tells me he can get me out of this mess. But, he's pretty sure you're fu**ed."

Braveheart.

im pretty sure all of these quotes happened in the movies b4 they were in card rooms! i.e, ill be back from dan harrington in 2003, terminator was out b4 2003 so he took it from the movie, not the movie from him, tony g to surindar, jaws was also out b4 this quote, so tony g took it from he movie, not the movie from him, as iis the same to the rest of the quotes

Mystery721 picked a 37 horse accumulator, his previous 16 37 horse accumulators having won..put it on blonde and then went off on one big time when people took the mickey...

Heid is hectic moderating moderators at work, we still speak occasionally.

Trace....blissfully married I hope

Flushy begins his HOTW's on Monday

Ahhhh that was it, shame you turned off the member search feature.

Flushy's hotw will be:

Raise with any 2
Big bet on flop (having missed)
Pot bet on turn (bluff)
Allin on river (refuses to let this one go)
Called on river by bottom pair for the pot by "kipper".

At what stage does he call the valet over for his next bottle of wine.  After the flop or after the turn??

It's after the turn. On the flop he has his thinking interrupted by Paul Parker coming over to tell him about the last hand he played.
