Title: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT - FINAL DAY
Post by: snoopy1239 on January 22, 2006, 03:21:37 PM
:hello:      :hello:      :hello:      :hello:      :hello:

Hi gang!

I'm currently lying on the bed in my hotel room. The temptation to press this Domino's Pizza room service button is more overwhelming than you can ever imagine. I must resist though. I need to maintain my figure.

Anyway, here's the final table. Play will recommence at 5pm.

The Final Table

Mads Andersen (Denmark) -- 1,023,000

Philip Hilm (Denmark) -- 600,500

Shek Chi Chung (Denmark) -- 307,000

Marc Naalden (Netherlands) -- 273,000

Anina Gundesen (Denmark) -- 223,500

Edgar Skjervold (Norway) -- 186,000

Markus Gonsalves (US) -- 156,000

Johan Berqvist (Sweden) -- 47,500

Give us a wave if you're watching.  :hello:

Well, I think it was pure luck that Anina lass made it to the final.

If she somehow manages to pull out the miracle of miracles to win the event, I'll eat my shoes.

Without ketchup...

Here is the prize list in Pound Sterling:

1st = £234,036

3rd = £65,823
4th = £51,195
5th = £43,882
6th = £36,568
7th = £29,260
8th = £21,941

Back in the lobby, and the 700 or so dinner guests from last night have dispersed (although from the singing coming from the dining room it was a great, and boozey, party).  The final table is chipped and ready, and we're just awaiting the players...

Here are my picks then, seeing as Snoopy insists..

1 Mads Andersen
2 Edgar Skjervold
3 Philip Hilm

I know these are someone else's but I switched 2 and 3 for a bit of controversy...

We've had some action - pretty much the first of the day - Johan Bergqvist went all-in, as you do when you are SO short stacked, Philip called.

Johan: AA (Overkill)
Philip AJ off.  The result was as expected - Bergqvist up to 100k or so.

Title: Re: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on January 22, 2006, 04:52:54 PM
And just as quickly - Johan Bergqvist OUT in 8th place for £21,941.

In the crucial hand, Mads limped, Johan raised to 46k and Anina then made it 100 - after that they were both all-in (after a brief pause where Johan enquired if Anina had Aces, and got the answer "No").
Johan  Aspades Js
Anina  Kd Kc

And we've lost one.

The last 3 hands:

(1) Edgar Skjervold raises preflop. All fold.

(2) Mads Andersen raises preflop. All fold.

(3) Mads Andersen raises 23k under the gun. Marc Naalden calls. Flop = AQT. Andersen bets 40k. Naalden folds.

With Edgar Skjervold on the big blind, Shek raises to 24k preflop. Anina is the only called.

Flop = 9d Tc  Ks

Shek bets out 25k. Anina folds.

I can't see those shoes bein eaten any time soon.

Anina raises 25k.

Shek, who is prehaps gunning for the female, reraises 69k.

Anina folds.

Is she being bullied? Hmm...

Joe Hachem is doing the commentary on the final table and he's a natural.  Working the audience, even getting the seasoned players like Mads to crack a smile:  "You're the chip leader, show me some teeth!!!"

But a better comp for everyone else.  ;cheerleader;

Title: Re: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on January 22, 2006, 05:17:18 PM
Edgar takes the blinds a couple of times, then Philip raises to 22k, Mads re-raises to 65k -  Philip calls.

Flop  Ts Th 3s.  Philip checks,  Mads chucks in a nonchalant 90k "with a flourish" says Rolf, and that wins him the pot.  He is still wearing that bizarro Mickey Mouse Jumper, which I am pleased to see, actually.  I quite want one.

Post by: snoopy1239 on January 22, 2006, 05:21:38 PM
Some hot 3 way action for you now.

Philip Helm raises to 22k preflop. Marc Naalden calls, and so does Edgar Skjervold on the big blind.

Now, brace yourself for some fireworks...

Flop = Qc 7s Ts

check, check, check

Turn = 2s

check, check check

River = 5d

check, check, check

Mayhem!!!

Edgar takes the pot with Kh Td

A bit of information for you on the first player eliminated from today's final:

8th place went to Johan Bergquist, a 37 year Swedish player from Stockholm.

Although he plays high stakes poker on a regular basis, he is in fact a CEO of a successful IT business. Poker is merely a hobby for him.

A bit like me really, except I play small stakes, am not a CEO, and play full-time rather than as a hobby. Apart from that we're like two peas in a pod.

A lot of small pots going on, three of which were taken by Philip (but there's a little under 20k in there each time with the blinds at 4000 - 8000 so that's not too shabby).

Another one was raised by Shek Chi Hung to 26k, called by the small and big blinds (Philip and Anina).  Anina bet out on the K 9 4 flop to take it down... so that's one back from Shek to her.

4) Shek Chi Hung     230,500
5) Mads Andersen   1,201,000

Young Yank Marcus Gonsalves, newly kitted out in his PokerStars shirt, is on the lager already (there's been a 15 minute break).

Edgar Skjervold, wonder-Norwegian, used HIS break to raise his stack in the other tournament to 14k (unbelievable).

Title: Re: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on January 22, 2006, 05:50:34 PM
Edgar just raised on the button to 22k, and saw a flop with big blind Shek of  6h Qh Ts.  Check-check.  Turn:  2c.  Shek bet 22k, was raised to 62k.  Then he got out a tissue and mopped his brow (we love the dramatics here) before eventually passing.

Title: Re: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on January 22, 2006, 06:01:28 PM
Shek has been putting the pressure on with the old all-in maoeuvre - twice he pushed Philip Helm off a pre-flop raise by shoving the lot in. The second time Philip raised under the gun to 26k, and asked for a countdown when Shek, on his immediate left did it again.  Finding the call to be a rather large 167,000 more, he passed sharpish.

Other than that, Edgar called on the sb, Philip raised 20k in the bb, he called.

Flop: 5 2 J.  Check, Philip 35k, Edgar passes.  This is the second blinds battle which Philip Helm has won.  Not sure how much longer Edgar will let him get away with it...

Title: Re: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on January 22, 2006, 06:08:52 PM
Shek Chi Hung OUT in 7th place, winning £29,260

Edgar raised to  31k on the cutoff. Philip flat called on the button -then Shek on the small blind moved all in again... Edgar dwells - - - and folds, but Philip calls!

Philip   Jc Js
Shek  Jd  Tc

Board: 4c 8h Ahrt 2d 9s

And then, according to Snoopy, that weird slow clap started as Shek got up.

Young American Markus Gonsalves has doubled up off Mads Andersen.

They hold KJ and AT respectively.

Flop comes T-K-7

Mads raises, Markus moves all-in, Mads calls.

No help arrives and Markus doubles through.

Mads still has in excess of 1 million chips. A mere drop in the ocean for him.

Post by: snoopy1239 on January 22, 2006, 06:21:49 PM
Speaking of Gonsalves...

The 21 year old American from San Diego California, qualified for the London EPT event last year but requested a seat change to this tournament in order to meet up with his Scandinavian buddies. In hindsight, a wise move!

An inevitable battle of the blinds confrontation for you now.

Hilm made up the blind and Andersen checked.

Flop =  Aspades Kc 4c

Hilm bet 20k, Andersen called.

Turn = Ac

Hilm bets again - 40k

Andersen reraises to 140k

Hilms gives a lengthy dwell be4 calling.

River = 5h

Hilm checks, Andersen immediately checks behind him.

Hilm shows Ad 4s for a cheeky trapcheck, but Mads obviously smelt a rat and failed to bite.

Post by: snoopy1239 on January 22, 2006, 06:30:48 PM
Mads Andersen's gigantic stack takes another hit when his preflop raise is reraised all-in by Edgar Skjervold for another 60k.

Mads calls with Ad 5c.

Skjervold 6c 6s holds up on a board of Qs 5d 3c Td 4h

Another battle of the blinds scenario.

Hilm and Skjervold see a cheap flop.

As Tc 5d

Check, check.

Very exciting!

2h

Skjervold bets 15k, Hilm smooth calls.

Qc

Skjervold bets again, Hilm calls with Ad 2s.

No raise on the turn? Very cheeky. In fact Hilm is playing this whole final very cheekily. Very cheeky indeed. Cheeky, cheeky, cheeky.

Looks like Hilm is the cheeky chip leader now.

They have now stopped for a short break.

Also being played is the 10,000 Krome freezout.

Bizarrely, Edgar Skjervold is also entered in this comp, even though he's playing the main event.

He's just ran down to save his dwindling stack.

I guess a poker player never rests.

To tide you over while you're waiting - Chinese-born Shek Chi Hung (who speaks no English so we're pleased PokerStars found this out for us) who played aggressively the whole way through (a bit of an any-two type) went out on his stated favourite hand - 10 J offsuit.  He's a regular on the Danish poker circuit who was always going to bust SOMEONE from the final...

Title: Re: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on January 22, 2006, 07:14:06 PM
Double up for Marcus Gonsalves - The 21-year-old onliner moved in on the cutoff for the 120k-ish he had left with A7.  He probably wasn't thrilled when Philip Helm called with AQ, but the 7 on the turn increased his stack to more healthy proportions and he can relax a bit.

Total Norwegian Pokerholic News Now -

Edgar Skjervold is still in both comps, and is now running back and forth from the TV table to the littler comp, most recently pushing all-in in the £1,000 one with AQ against fellow Norseman's 99 and spiking the Queen to get him over 20k.  That must take some doing with all the wires and stuff to remove every time he leaves the Set...

Title: Re: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on January 22, 2006, 07:25:28 PM
Edgar just doubled through off Philip in rather surprising fashion - looks like my picks are spot on :)

Philip raised to 40k, Edgar called in the big blind.
Flop: K 3 4 (rainbow)   and guess what?   It went check, check.

Turn: 7  Philip bet 65k, and called when Edgar pushed all-in for 189k, and eventually Philip called.

Philip:  KJ
Edgar K7!  (and that seven on the turn looked so brick-y)

Edgar up to 600,000.

Anina Gundesen OUT in 6th place, winning £36,568

Philip raised under the gun to 40k, raised to 80k by Anina on the button.  He called.

Flop:   Kc Jh 9h  Check, bet, re-raise all-in from Philip, which Anina called, showing QJ - but Philip had KQ and the rags on the turn and river sealed her fate.

I don't think Snoopy will cry about it for long, somehow....put the condiments away :)

Whilst we're waiting for them to finish their din dins, here's a titbit of information on chip leader Mads Andersen.

Age - 35
Nationality - Danish
Jumper - Red, with a Mickey Mouse on the front. (Lucky jumper apparantly)
Style - agressive
Honours - 2002 World Backgammon Champion

Mads soon switched to poker and quickly established himself as one of Europe's most successful cash game players.

Edgar Skjervold, who is playing two comps tonight, is now on 35k in the 10,000 Krome freezout.

Is he going to perform a miracle and win both events?

Just found a bit of written information on Dutchman Marc Naalden. He's kept very low tonight, but he's still in and seems to be quietly climbing the ladder.

Seat 6: Marc Naalden, 37, Holland

Chess fanatic Marc started playing poker three years ago at a recreational level, but the more he plays the more he wins. Having started out playing only online, he is now planning on attending future EPT events, including Deauville next month. Marc, who lives in the diamond capital of the world, is short of chips but remains positive. "I need to double up, and then we'll see."

Mads Andersen, pretty much everyone's top pick this afternoon, has done half his stack and just now folded another preflop raise of 40k to Marc Naalden's all-in.  But it's good to see that the redistribution hasn't made him any less aggressive.  Thanks Julian for a bit of infor on Philip, too, the present chip leader - we really were drawing a bit of a blank on him...

It looks like Edgar's 10,000 Krone event is going downhill as their blinds are racing upwards and he just can't teleport between the two fast enough.

Other than that, it's been raise-and-take-the-blinds stuff on the final table.

And here some is:

Mads raises (again) to 60k preflop, called by Marc on the button.
Flop: J J 8    Mads bets out 90k, receives a call.  Go on, guess what they have....
Turn: 8    Double check, as it were
River: 9   Checked again - Marc shows A7 for top kicker with the two pair on board, but Mads has 6 9 and wins the pot.

Makes you want to see inside the hole-card camera holes to find out what Mads has been doing the rest of the time...

Yet another battle of the blinds develops between Edgar and Philip - with Edgar calling Philip's 40k big blind raise.
On the flop of  Ks 8d 4d, Edgar check-raised Philip's 70k bet to the tune of 210,000 - which eventually won him the pot.

A few hands for you now. Jen is on watch in the cardroom, so you're stuck with likkle ol' me.

Philip Hilm raises 50k under the gun.
Mads Andersen reraises 150k.
Philip Hilm folds

A few hands later.
Philip Hilm flat calls under the gun.
Everyone else calls, big blind checks.
First family pot of the night. Wooooooo!

Flop = Ad Qd 7h

Check, check, check. Very exciting so far.

Turn = 8d

Check, check...

then Hilm bets 80k and takes down the pot.

A bit of controversy now.

It was folded round to the blinds. Marc Naarden announces 'raise' and Markus Gonsalves pushes all-in.

Naalden mulls it over before deciding to raise the minimum and folding.

Philip Hilm was the asassin.

Gonsalves reraised all-in with  Ad 9d

Edgar Skjervold is OUT of the 10,000 Kroner freezout.

He somehow managed to come 27th out of 128 players.

Incredibly he wasn't blinded away. He rushed over to the table during the main event chip count, moved all in with a rag ace, and lost.

Ah well, I suppose the thousands he's guaranteed in the main event will soften that blow.

ps. 10,000 Kroner is around a grand.

Danish Skirmish News Now -

Philip raised to 70k preflop; Mads re-raised to 200k.  Phil called.

Flop  Ac Ts 9c.  Mads bet 250k, and Phil gave him the old staredown for a good long time before passing and giving that chunky pot to Mads.

Incidentally, Britt tells us that someone in the audience went up to Mads and gave him a 'lucky coin' about an hour ago, when it looked like he might be able to use one of those.  Apparently this audience member keeps shouting to him to remember the Lucky Coin, which is quite odd.  But he's ever so popular here (Mads, not the shouty guy).

Phil just raised to 80k and was re-raised all-in by Marc.  Phil asked for a countdown (something he does a large percentage of the time) and passed.

Then just when we thought there'd just be more of that for a while..................

Philip raised to 90k, Marc moved in, and got a caller!  Marc  Ac  Ahrt vs. Philip  4c 4h

The board brought nothing but the  Ad on the river to rub it in and it's good news for the Dutch player - a double up.

Press question from Rolf: "Who calls with a pair of fours?"
Press answer: "Philip Helm."

Two-Outer Double Up News Now -

In a rather strange hand, Marc raises to 100k preflop, and is re-raised another 260k-ish all-in by Edgar.  He calls with Q 9 and finds a race - against Edgar's 88.

Flop: Q J J
Turn: 6
River (you all know what this is from the title): 8!

So Edgar in much better shape (oh see how accurate my predictions were!) which I am sure he wasn't expecting on the flop.

Title: Re: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on January 22, 2006, 10:53:23 PM
Marc flat calls preflop on Philip's big blind.  So we see a flop cheaply.  It's 9 4 Q - checked twice.  Turn - 2.  Philip checks, Marc bets 50k and Philip moves in for the full 376k, which Marc calls.

Philip 9 4
Marc Q K

The river rag didn't change anything and there's one of the reasons the old big blind likes limpers now and then...

Big blind Hilm calls Naalden's 90k preflop raise.

Flop = Kc 9s Th

Hil checks. Naalden bets 60k. Perhaps deeming the size of the bet to be a sign of weakness, Hilm reraises to 180k.

Naalden folds.

My spider senses tell me that there's gonna be an elimination soon.

But then again, those same senses also told me that Anina wouldn't make the 2nd day, nevermind the final table. ;tk;

Phil and Mads get into a big hand on the blinds.  They see the  3h 3c 8c for cheap, but then the bets and raises go like this - Check from Phil, then bet, raise, re-raise and call, which ends up being 280k.
The turn:  6s.  Phil checks, and Mads just goes all-in, but doesn't get called.  He just picked up close to 700k right there... the first big action in the last hour.

After Rolf plunged for Mads, I've been forced to change to Phil Hilm. Our Irish friend has chosen Dutchman Marc Naarden, just to try and take money off Rolf via his countryman.

After Mads latest flurry, my 100 Krone bet is looking shakey.

More River Shennanigans for Edgar Skjervold News -

When it passed to his small blind he moved in on big blind Philip Helm, who called, perhaps to his surprise, seeing as he held 78 offsuit and Phil had the A10.

Flop: 9 6 J
Turn: J
River: 5 - and there we have his double up.

Miracle time.

Naarden limps for 40k under the gun.

Hilm moves all-in from the small blind with Qh 5c

Naarden calls with Aspades 6d

Flop = 6s 6c 7h

Naarden thinks about what colour his Ferrari is going to be.

Turn = 8s

Naarden thinks about what colour his Porsche is going to be.

River = 9s giving Hilm a miracle straight.

Naarden think about what colour his Skoda is going to be.

Ouch

With the blinds at 20,000 - 40,000 (this is really going on and on), Marc doubles up with 77 against Mads' A4 (that's the second time he's gone for it with this hand after raising initially - this time to 120k).

In Press Corner, every double up is met with cheers and boos as we've resorted to wagering on these guys to keep us from thinking about pizza..

Phil moved his depleted stack in on Mads' big blind... and got a call, which we were sort of expecting, from Mads with  Ad 7c.

Marc doubles up.

Well, it's not the quick conclusion we sort of figured - just now Edgar was pushed off a raise by Mads' moving in...

Then after a smooth call/check combo preflop, a flop came of 4h 6h Jh.  Edgar checks, Mads bets 70k, call
 Ac on the turn, check-check
River:  6s    Edgar checks, Mads bets 60k, and gets called.  Edgar's Q4 is good!

How about this one?

Board  Jc 7s Aspades 9s after a checked flop.  Mads check-raised Edgar's 70k bet to 250k, and then passed when Edgar moved in.  It looks like the upper hand is edging Norway's way (Woody is beside himself)

Key hand Brought By Britta:

As seems quite a popular choice, it was a checked flop ( Th 4h Qd)
Turn:   Jh - Mads bet 60k, Edgar called
River:  7d  - This time Mads bet 200k, and Edgar called with the runner runner 2 pair he'd picked up (J7)

Tom Murphy says that the blinds going up to 40k - 80k is the most interesting thing about this heads up.  Possibly.

I'm still awake! ;tk;

Wasn't it Mads who won the J7 hand?

Has the 10K krone event finished?

Oh, wait - ACTION

Edgar called on the s.b., raise from Mads to 180k, re-raise all-in, CALL

Edgar shows  Ad 5c
Mads shows  Ahrt Qc

Flop:  9d 8d 6d   (how about that for the preflop underdog?!)
Turn:  5h
River:  Jc

Edgar doubles up and now has most of the chips - 2,100,000 to Mads' 700,000

Hi Mel and posters - good to hear from you!  Don't know where I'll be yet any day - it's all traveltastic at the moment... will give you a ring though :)

Immediately, Mads doubles back up with Q 10 on a 10 4 4 flop, when Edgar moved him all-in on a bluff with KJ

Now 1.8 million to Mads, and 1 million to Edgar - it's all we can do to keep up.

PS Snoopy is in the thick of the action, which is why you haven't heard his dulcet tones for a while, but he's doing a brilliant job despite looking sleepy (like all the updaters!) while I report from the hall.

Too late!  Huge shout from Snoopy's area - We have a winner!

Mads Andersen Wins the comp and £234,036

Edgar Skjervold takes 2nd and £128,720

Mads  Ac Qh vs Edgar   Aspades Th  The money went it's merry way into the middle preflop, as is, perhaps to be expected...

 Flop: 9h Kh 4h
Turn:  Qc
River:  Ts

And we have a champion here in Copenhagen, and a popular one, from the roar of the crowd.

Hi all. Thx to those still following this.

The heads up was gruelling. The play was first class and neither player ever looked like losing their cool and resorting to maniac poker.

A few pics on the way.

The most important victory tonight is the pint bet I had with the Danish Journalist. With around 20 players remaing, he opted for Edgar, and I plunged for Mads. Bizarrely, these two ended up heads up. Even more bizarrely, I actually won my bet.

Now, if I could just find this bloomin journalist...

Well i have to say guys, that the coverage was really top banana. I am amazed that you've managed to turn an event of which most of those who i wanted to follow went out early on the final day, into something that was so enjoyable to read.

<applauds/>

Great stuff ;)
