Title: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: theprawnidentity on July 23, 2013, 09:58:13 AM Yesterday my GF decided that she had an interest in poker all of a sudden. She now wants to learn the game (well, the rules first) and start playing. Does anyone have success stories (or otherwise) with regards to this kind of thing?
She also said she wanted to come and watch some live stuff, I tried to explain to her that it's pretty slow and boring from the outside but she is adamant! Do I give in and let her OR insist that it's not a good idea? Cliffs: Poker player in GF shocker!!!!!! Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: kinboshi on July 23, 2013, 10:05:56 AM Sounds good to me. She can then at least nod and frown at the right places during your bad-beat stories.

Post by: Matt.NFFC. on July 23, 2013, 11:16:47 AM She is wanting to see how much money you blow on poker to see if you are worthy of a life together IMO.
It's a test.....prepare to get ditched when you show little emotion to losing some money. She will see that spending her life with you is high risk and therefore not tenable. Either that, or she just wants to learn the game and spend more time with you! What do you reckon? Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Lol - do you really have that much sway It doesn't matter what you say it's obvious one of her friends has said "are you sure he is at poker" so you need to throw full thrust in to teaching her the basics then when she knows the general rules take her along to a beginners tourney at dtd. If she shows little interest in learning and just wants to come along with you then the friend theory is correct. I would lay money though that within ten minutes a comment about the valets outfit and the snippet of "I can see why you like poker now" will have left her lips Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? I am 100% sure she knows where I am and doesn't think I'm up to anything else. So were saying that teaching her will be +ev or -ev? Looking forward to Bedi's response later fwiw..... Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: rfgqqabc on July 23, 2013, 01:18:35 PM Strip poker ftw?
Definitely don't take her to a live game, you'll have to go within an hour. Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: theprawnidentity on July 23, 2013, 01:20:54 PM First take her to a very poor establishment, preferably a bit smelly and with some horrible regs in the hope that she hates it. Next though, have a cracking home game. Suggest that, whilst you sort the table and chips out, she squares away the pizzas and bar snacks. Invite a cracking crowd and ensure a great night is had by all...most importantly the missus. This should ensure she wants more poker nights...plus..you already have her in the routine of sorting the food/beer whilst u set up. Magic. ps. My ex wife loved our poker nights but I'm now divorcing... Lol! As much as I love your creativety, I have never held OR played in a home game in my entire life. Quite odd that none (neither) of my best mates from school / college have even the slightest interest in playing cards. Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: SuuPRlim on July 23, 2013, 01:29:33 PM maybe, after lots of you talking so passionately and enthusiastically about poker she is just intrigued!
Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: pleno1 on July 23, 2013, 01:36:10 PM teach her open face imo, im trying to teach mine and think its a lot easier to pick up.
Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: rfgqqabc on July 23, 2013, 01:37:15 PM maybe, after seeing you win some monies playing poker she is just hoping to win some coin herself. fyp Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: theprawnidentity on July 23, 2013, 01:43:40 PM Thing is, she's known about me playing and benefitted from it for a number of years. There's no real need for her to learn the game cause she just takes the money anyway.
Anyhow, wasn't really after an autopsy on her decision to want to learn, just, should I teach her and can any good come of it? Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: Nakor on July 23, 2013, 02:17:02 PM I think its a good idea.
My good lady did show an interest when I started to learn the game, and did attend a couple of home games, and ran well and won some coin. This kept the interest going long enough that when DtD opened she was interested enough to travel to Notts but the shopping or Cricket always pulled her stronger then DtD and she never played a DtD comp, but she is happy to come and have a beer or meal while she waits for me to bust before midnight. All of this led to her understanding the game better, understanding the time I once threw at it, and did ultimately get us to Vegas a couple of times, which led to the wedding story and all the rest. Sadly the allure of the wheel of death is now much stronger for her then the poker table, which does put my hourly rate under a little more pressure. I can't see a downside to be honest, but the fact you asked the question must mean that something in the back of your mind thinks its a bad idea? Shared interest, understanding of what you do and the time you invest can only be good? Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: Tal on July 23, 2013, 10:23:54 PM Two possible explanations:
1. Your good lady has had her interest piqued by your romping enthusiasm for this game and, as she wants to be with you when you are at your happiest (sorry, second happiest; obviously you're at your happiest when you are having a romantic dinner with her), she will go the extra mile to learn to play herself and join you at the tables; or 2. Your mistreated better half is finally putting her foot down on all this nocturnal activity and wants to see what you really get up to when you leave the house after dinner and don't return until The Wright Stuff starts, smelling of sweaty old men and flavoured tobacco. She suspects you of having a Moroccan boyfriend in his early sixties and, although 99.7% disgusted, in some dark corner of her psyche, she's curious. She's learning poker purely as an exercise - pun ahoy - to call your bluff and meet Mr El-Pokeuri. In either case, mercifully, the solution is the same: You need to think of something she does on her own and offer to join her the night before she is going to join you at the tables. Whatever it is - painting her nails, watching Sex and the City, Ann Summers party (I assume this is some form of tuppaware thing?) - make sure you make a total arse of yourself; I mean really go to town. But be endearing. Don't shout about how utterly intolerable the experience is or point out how unappealing Charlotte's character is. No. Just be really shit. Spill the nail polish, use the same spoon in two different tubs of Ben and Jerry's. Ask what the swirly bit does on that funny-shaped remote control. She won't fall out with you about it. In fact, if you pull it off, she'll love you more for it. But she won't fancy reciprocating any time soon. When you are ready to invite her into your "man zone", you can do so easily and with confidence that you are in control. That or just MTFU and get on with it. You'll know which is better, I'm sure. Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: EvilPie on July 23, 2013, 10:32:40 PM Can't see the need for a thread to be honest.
Just man up and take her with you to a live game just as she's requested. If that's what she wants then just do it, blokes are supposed to do what their girl wants, that's just how it works. Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: Cf on July 24, 2013, 12:55:16 AM It's a good thing overall.
My gf comes with me to the occasional pub game. She knows the rules well enough and has a somewhat basic understanding of strategy. It's nice to involve her in something I enjoy. The only downside I find is when I watch her play a hand really badly. I feel like it reflects badly on me! Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: vegaslover on July 25, 2013, 12:26:26 PM lols at some of the reply's here. As you have known here for ages and she knows you play poker I doubt it's about her thinking you got a bird on the side.
Take her along, she will soon see how boring playing is most of the time, let alone watching someone else play for hours. If she wants to learn teach her, but be prepared for her to soon get bored of it. Taught my mrs to play and she played a few games online and a few home games, but soon got bored of it, even when she was winning Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: pleno1 on July 25, 2013, 12:38:52 PM teach her open face imo, im trying to teach mine and think its a lot easier to pick up. Pads with the advanced poker answer... standard :) Ive just read the title of this thread to my better half and she said " She must be pretty bored to want to learn ! " In serious Fraser. She would be closer to equal skill level and she would do great I'm sure. If she places online shed play 2nl she could play for 1/2 dollars at open face. Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: VBlue on July 25, 2013, 01:03:55 PM watching Sex and the City Real men think this series is called Sex in the City. Title: Re: GF wants to get involved with some poker, +ev? Post by: VBlue on July 25, 2013, 01:05:40 PM My bird, 'The Piranha' learnt to play not long after me - just playing small home games, but then also a few games out.
She ran like Goulder and won first time in a pub game for a few hundo and bought a laptop. Ran a few dollars into just over a hundo and bought a dress. FT'd another. Then pretty much stopped playing.
