Been playing some OFC with various rules.  Anyone have any thoughts on what to do in this situation:

Playing a variant with Alex where we get dealt 7 cards pre and have to swap 2 of them before placing.  We get dealt:

 Ad Kc  Qd Jh Jd 5h 5s

Which two do we send to Alex and why?

How do we proceed when it comes to placing them?

Assuming fantasyland is on Id maybe send him the 55 and set up

Ive also been experimenting with more starting cards/passing, Ive found that if you start with more than 5 cards then it becomes way easier to make royaltys/not foul.  Start with 5 and pass 1 works ok, start with 5 and pass 2 might be fun

There's probably no definitive right way to set this without some clairvoyance, there's a downside to discarding any 2 of these cards but I'd say:

If playing with fantasy land

-                                           -   Qd
-   Ad                      or            -   Ad Kc     (putting K on top makes more points when paired but  
-   Jh Jd 5h 5s                         -   Jh Jd      probably more important to give yourself a chance to pair
                                                             A or K in middle to enable pairing Q on top, foul less this way too although still a pretty fouly hand.)

Without fantasy

I agree with this, the game seems to get much bigger when you start with 7.  I like the idea of:

with fantasyland in play.

I am currently doing some excel work on this game so hopefully can start to see some patterns on decent "openings" and the like.  Been doing work on odds of drawing flushes with x exposed cards etc.  Haven't even got onto pairs/2ps/straights/FH's/Quads/SF's etc yet, I imagine that developing some kind of usable system might take some time!!!!  Soooooo many variables its unreal.

Pass him the fives, it's all you can do with THIS good a hand.

When you pull first card check its fully live and straight to the bottom, if it isn't put it next to Q

Any beginners video or good text about?

Don't want to be a complete fish at the game and would like to start playing

I'd imagine with some work and tinkering with different scoring systems/passing cards one could have a huge edge over someone who is 'good' at the standard rules, right?



With very limited knowledge about the game/scoring w/e, I'd be setting the Ad Qd Jd with 55

There's some blogs about but bro's seem to want money for apps that are neithet use nor ornament.  Decided to do some work myself.  Pretty sure starting combos would change depending on rules though.

And fwiw i don't imagine edges will ever be that big regardless.

isn't it bad to cap yourself to trips/2pair at the bottom by putting the 2 random cards there. would it not be better to put 1 up top with the Q (preferably a card 6 or higher if we get one) and the other with JJ?

Maybe, Im not entirely sure.  Theory behind putting them both at the bottom is that making FL is way bigger than boating up at the bottom and it is essential we have 2 pair minimum at the bottom so we're capping ourselves to 2 pair/trips there but we will have 8 live outs from the start to make it instead of 5+backdoors.  Im not sure if this is mathematically optimal though

This,  although FL isn't worth as much with the 7 pass 2 rule compared to standard 5 card. The way the hand is set out also depends a lot on if we're in position and how live we are.

Only ever played 5 card OFC no Fantasyland.

What are the rules for Fantasyland?

With this swap two cards thing how does it proceed, does Alex in this get 5 cards plus two off you? If he gets 7 cards and two off you does he get to give you two of them?

you each get dealt 7 cards, discard 2 each (before each other sees what theyve been given) then set your new 7 card hand with the 5 you kept and the 2 you inherited.

To get into fantasyland you need to have QQ+ at the top (3 card hand) and once in fantasy land you get dealt all 13 cards at once and can set them all however you please. If your playing a pass card variant you get to pass cards even in FL which is pretty huge when you can discard 2 worthless cards out of 13

So there is no real point deciding what to play till you recieve cards from oppo as getting a diamond or a club or a broadway card could change your thinking
