Not actually true. Sashimi is raw fish. Sushi is specially prepared rice, often but not always with raw fish.

OK - here's the list of the stuff you have to try - but whilst you're there, try everything!


Toro - this is the best stuff.  It's the fatty underbelly of tuna.  The most expensive stuff, but melt in your mouth and absolutely lovely.


Maguro - this is your regular tuna, but the staple sashimi (raw fish) used in sushi.


Sha-ke / sa-ke - salmon.  This is the easiest one for many Westerners to get their heads round as it's very similar to smoked salmon.


Hamachi - yellowtail.  Similar to tuna and another easy one to eat, but not as common.


Tai - sea bream.  Gorgeous and one of my favourites.  Not sure if they replace it with a similar fish in the States, I know they tend to do that over here - which is a shame.


Ebi - prawns, almost always cooked, and if you like prawns you'll like ebi-zushi

Tako - Octopus.  A bit chewy, but a good flavour


Ika - squid.  A bit of a strange one.  A texture that reminds me of epoxy resin in slime.   Not really selling it am I?  Worth trying though, and I'll always have some amongst the fish.


Hota-te - Scallop.  Another perennial favourite.


Then there are two I always avoid, but others absolutely love.  So best to find out for yourself!

Uni - Sea urchin.  Generally looks like a yellow tongue, but is actually made from the balls of the sea urchin (I kid you not).  A Japanese delicacy, so one you have to try at least once...


Ikura - salmon roe.  Again a favourite of many, but one that I avoid like the plague.  You've got to try it though!



The different forms of sashimi are best tried on their own as sashimi.  Then you get to taste them on their own, and then you usually move on to the sushi.  There are lots of different ways of presenting the sushi - which is simply the boiled rice with rice wine vinegar, salt and sugar added and then rolled into shapes. Sometimes that's it other than the topping (usually sashimi), and the wasabi (the Japanese horseradish which can be bloody hot!).  Sometimes nori (dried seaweed) is used to wrap the rice, and there are a few other methods.

Yo Sushi! is a bit.... meh.  It's not awful, but it's not good sushi.

Heard that there is a decent place in Loughborough - so guess that might be it.  I was recommended Higoi in Nottingham (in Lenton, not too far from DTD), and it was very good indeed.  Would definitely recommend it.

If you go with friends who don't fancy sashimi or sushi, there'spplenty of other goodsstuff on the menu as well.

It was a few years ago now, and I was impressed. It was very authentic and felt just like placesiI've beentto in Japan. Food was really good as well.

What didn't you like about it, the quality of the food?

Mostly the company (I went with Vinny and Plinton).

Actually it's a great place to take Vinny for food because he won't touch anything.

The food just wasn't what I'd expect for the price and I was pretty underwhelmed. I will go back for sure though - convinced I caught them on a rare bad day.
