Title: Omaha - Basics ? Post by: Steve Swift on November 10, 2013, 01:28:30 PM Ok I haven't played Omaha before but I am in a little club on stars and they have a Omaha event on. I want to support the group so going to play but have no/little clue. I think I am right, you have to play 2 cards of the 4 dealt and then normal Holdem rules apply? It is also a limit event , just to add a little more confusion for my pea sized brain.
So as few words as possible :) any advice, best starting hands and ermmmmmmmmmmmmm nah that should do. I also played "a Triple stud" event with them last night and am mildly embarrassed to say I won it. ( was only 5 players, but what ever, took nearly 3 hours to complete and I will never play it again) Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? Post by: GreekStein on November 10, 2013, 02:57:05 PM Ive been primarily a PLO player for a good few years now and I always say to beginners who ask these sort of questions that if your starting cards cannot make at least 4 good hold em hands, dont play.
For example. AKQ9 you have AK AQ QK Q9 K9 A9 - that qualifies with 6 strong NL hands so you're going to be able to make strong hands and have strong redraws. Adding in suitedness naturally increases the strength. It's ok to open something like Aspades Qs 7d 6d from late position but bear in mind we only have 2 decent NL hands in AQ and 67 and 2 very marginal ones (A7 and A6). When you are drawing, try and draw to the nuts or fairly nutted draws. In NL if you have 4h 5h on a board of 6h 7d Qh you generally have a strong hand that you can play very aggressively. In PLO lets say you have Aspades 3c 4h 5h this is considerably weaker because almost all the outs that improve you, make someone else bigger nuts. That seems like a fairly good first few tips for a newbie! Let us know how you get on - post some hands here imo and I'll give some pointers if I can. Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? As a newbies, the 4 ( or 3 at a push) NLH starting hands is the greatest advice any Omaha newbie can take on board. Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? Post by: Tal on November 10, 2013, 03:14:17 PM Switching from holdem to Omaha, you'll notice sets being much more frequent. That sounds obvious because everybody has two more cards (and five more two-card combinations in their hand) but it catches beginners out. Look for ways to have the nuts on the river, rather than on the flop.
Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? Post by: Tal on November 10, 2013, 03:14:37 PM Also, do what LilDave says. Twice if you have to.
Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? Post by: GreekStein on November 10, 2013, 03:19:48 PM Look for ways to have the nuts on the river, rather than on the flop. can't say I agree with this part Tal. Having the nuts at any point is a good thing. Obviously when you are playing the right hands you will often have redraws to bigger nuts which is great also. Good advice from Lord Conk F U! xx Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? What I mean is don't get too attached to hands where you don't have redraws. When I very first started playing Omaha, it was a tactic that worked out for me. Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? Post by: dreenie on November 10, 2013, 11:22:14 PM Use your position well, start with 4 cards that preferably work together, if on draws, look to be drawing to the nuts, no point trying to inflate the pot pre flop with Aces, from previous experience your likely to lose all your money.
P.S If in a pot with any Canadian FOLD regardless. glgl Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? Post by: mumblesrock on November 11, 2013, 07:01:57 PM always consider there are always draws for everyone in a large ring game. you might have the nuts on the flop and turn, but can get outdrawn by many hands on the river!! be careful.

Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? Post by: smurf on November 11, 2013, 08:50:10 PM might sound totally obvious but having 3 or 4 of the same in your hand is no good and don't get hung up on AA in your hand...lots of people seem to...the winning hands tend to knock up a few notches in omaha...straights, flushes and full houses are average just like 1 and 2 pair would be in hold em.
Enjoy...and don't let those suck outs upset ya! Title: Re: Omaha - Basics ? Post by: Steve Swift on November 12, 2013, 12:10:50 AM TY for taking the time to help.
