Title: The Karl Pilkington Society of Tourist Attraction Let Down Awards
Post by: jjandellis on November 13, 2013, 04:46:01 PM
Just saw a post elsewhere about the Astronomical Clock in Prague being a great disappointment, second only to Copenhagen's Little Mermaid. I was discussing the Little Mermaid only yesterday!!!

So that's my first nomination: The Little Mermaid, Copenhagen.

I visited in 1998 and found it to be pathetically small akin to something you would find at the waters edge of a small UK towns' boating lake.

This isn't my photo, just pulled off google with people for scale - but I'm sure it was even smaller:

LET THE NOMINATIONS BEGIN!

Somebody chopped its head off once though, that was quite funny  ;D

The Needles Park on the Isle of Wight.  Absolute fucking wank.  Eroded so they're not even needles, just stumps.  The park that's built on the top of the hill is wank, the beach is wank, the walk down the beach is wank, the prices are wank and the attractions in the park are absolute complete fucking wank.

I would rather cut my dick off and throw it in a river then ever go back to that absolute shit hole!!!!!

Stonehenge

Truly cracked tourists take a 40-minute hike up something called the "Hollyridge trail" to see big letters up close.

Loch Ness escapes because its beautiful.

I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised or disappointed when "The Little Mermaid" was small.  Surely the clue is in the name.

Not sure it counts as a tourist attraction as such but the Dulwich Portrait Gallery is by far the dullest afternoon I have ever spent anywhere.  Although an ex girlfriend once tried to sell me on a house in Stockwell on the basis that the "Type museum" was nearby and had  a glorious array of historical technologies for type design and manufacture.  I dodged that bullet though.

Golden Gate Bridge. Just a bridge made out of orange girders. Crap.
!!! It's an amazing bridge

Trevi (spelling?) fountain in Rome was a let down, pretty small and ugly and you can't move for people

And it's no wonder the Italians don't play cricket. Your dodging bullets (coins) left right and centre!

+1 on whole of Rome in general. Dirty place, felt let down by most things apart from the pizza and ice cream.

Actually like Stonehenge. Baffles me how they managed to knock that up.

Grand canyon was pretty meh for me.

Chicago, as a whole.  Like New York but without any of the stuff you'd actually want to see in New York.  Drinking establishments very thin on the ground too.

Was also very underwhelmed by Stonehenge first time I drove past it as a child (just thought it would be bigger!).  Like Milli though, I find the whole thing pretty incredible.

Stonehenge has also reminded me of something else, but it needs a new thread.

Given I have just bought a home fairly close by and expect to spend the rest of my life there this may come as something of a surprise but South Beach Miami.   I love the architecture but generally I find the whole area to be largely inhabited by pretentious, arrogant people.  The restaurants and bars are overpriced and poor and the whole area is just a massive disappointment.  I have probably spent a year in South Florida in the past three and could count the number of times I have gone to South Beach on one hand.  It wouldn't bother me massively if I never visited again.

Agree, completely underwhelmed by it.

A couple of nice restaurants and bars, but on the whole pretty crap.

The beach itself was tez.

Bondi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> South Beach

Sydney Opera House was much smaller and shitter than I expected it to be. Ditto Bondi Beach.

Didn't like the Opera house?  What about the setting with the harbour and the bridge?  I thought it was a great setting and would love to see that on daily on my way to work.

Chicago was amazing for me, spent about 10 days there last year and had a great time.

Used to commute past that for too short a time.  Where I worked there was a small park nearby by the waters edge, where you could sit and eat your sandwiches with a view of the harbour, Bridge and Opera House.  Fantastic.  Aussies all sat at their desks to eat their sandwiches obviously.

Bondi is pretty meh, there are better beaches in Sydney.

Uluru, really long way to go to stare at a rock.  I mean it was fairly impressive for about an hour, then it got a bit boring.  We were there for 24 hours, which was about 23 too many.

Los Angeles-  Characterless place that takes itself far too seriously. The commerce has some of the most sub human scum in the entire world under one roof.

Disagree about Chicago really enjoyed my visits there and also thought Uluru was awesome.

Agree with Pisa, leaning tower is pretty meh and overrated. Grand Canyon while very cool is massively oversold and I wouldn't have it in my top 5 natural wonders in the western us never mind the world. Top 5 would be Yellowstone, Yosemite, crater lake, glacier national
Park and big sur.

Little Mermaid was ridic small...should be called the ridiculously small Mermaid...

Oh I think my actual biggest annoyance is The Pyramids of Giza, but Karl P has kinda stolen my story. For years I would tell anyone that listened what an absolute shithole they were, a literal dump with rubbish flying around in the air...and con merchants harrassing and fleecing you at every turn...but nobody believed me...just told me I was a miserable bugger...until Idiot Abroad showed I was right.

I thought the pyramids were breathtaking. Karl Pilkington is an idiot. The clue is in the title of his programme.
