Title: Things you don't see in football any more..
Post by: The Camel on January 12, 2014, 02:48:32 PM
Just saw something in the Newcastle v Man City I don't remember seeing for a while.

Got me thinking,  how things have changed in the last 30 odd years.

Here's what I came up with, got any more?

1. Attacking free kick. Two players stand over the ball. One just taps the ball to one side to give the shooter a slightly clearer path to goal. Now they just almost always shoot direct. (I wonder if this is because it's easier to bend the ball now?)

2. Attacking indirect free kicks. I suppose the four steps for goalkeepers rule being abolished has cut these down (although the back pass rule should compensate?), but you just never see obstruction given any more. Nothing more fun than an indirect free kick 8 yards from goal

3. Goalkeepers being called goalies.

4. A striker breaks clear and is one on one with the keeper. Nowadays the either shoot around or chip over the goalie. Much rarer to see the striker to round the keeper and try to slot the ball into an empty net. In the old days that was the most common imo.

5. Players standing in a wall facing a free kick used to grab their appendages like their lives depended on it. Now they seem more worries about their precious little cherub faces..

A team challenging for the league who hasn't spent eleventy billion pounds. Yes I am bitter and it has affected my enjoyment of the game.

Yes, this.

Also - outfielders going in goal when a keeper is taken off injured or sent off.

Yes, but in my memory it seems like it was almost always that way, whereas now I'd be surprised if it > 10% of one on ones.

Defenders taking goal kicks

Happened a few weeks ago at Forest when we played Leeds, Kenny got clattered in the first couple of minutes so one of their centre halves ended up taking goal kicks. Admittedly it was only because of an injury...

Yes, it's a bit sad really.

Steaua Bucharest, Levski Sofia, Widzew Lodz were all really big clubs back in the day.

My personal favourites were Red Star Belgrade on who I right touch when they won the European Cup.

Hartlepool usually pick an end if the win the toss at home in the autumn.

The sun setting  is a real problem for goalkeepers and defenders at Victoria Park.

FA Cup replays, sometimes running for 4 or 5 games.
Also FA Cup semi final replays no longer exist. That famous Ryan Giggs goal against Arsenal was in a FA Cup semi final replay.
The Bayern Munich against Athletico Madrid European Cup final in the 1970s went to a replay.
2 leg UEFA Cup finals are no more.
The Cup Winners Cup is gone.
I'm going to start crying in a minute. What have they done to our game??????????

Oh yes about the FA Cup relays thing.

I remember the 5th round draw always used to include teams still in the 3rd round down to replays and postponed matches.

Was never a fan of the two legged UEFA Cup final I must admit.

a player being good

a player is now either

shit, hopeless, worse than my nan or a lot worse

or

world class, best player ever, brightest prospect for years

when in reality most players sit in the average-good bracket by definition if you play in a top european league you are not a "shit" player

Same with Managers. Some lad who plays FM thinks he knows better.

Very much agree with FA Cup replays. I can remember the very game that piqued my interest in footy. In 1979 Sheff Weds  were a lower league club and had drawn Arsenal in the cup, it took 5 matches including a replay on a neutral ground. Can still remember listening to the first replay on a tiny old radio with dad and uncles in our front room and can see clear as day the sheer joy on all their faces when Weds scored and we got to do that 3 more times too, loved every minute of it. Probably my first ever experience of male bonding. Nicking slurps of beer when the adults were pretending not to look and dad telling me that I might hear some words that only adults are allowed to say and under no circumstances could I use them.

''''Sheffield Wednesday v Arsenal (1979)
Now if we’re talking FA Cup replays, this is the daddy of all ties. Arsenal may have won the FA Cup in 1979, beating Manchester United 3-2 in the final, but they took their time getting there, needing no less than FOUR replays to get passed Third Division Sheffield Wednesday in the third round.

The first match, on January 6th, saw the sides draw 1-1 at Hillsborough, a scoreline that was repeated at Highbury three days later. The tie then moved to Leicester’s Filbert Street and ended up 2-2, and then 3-3 before Arsenal final got past the Owls 2-0 on January 22nd.''''

I hate this thing about not celebrating against former clubs nowadays.

I mean it's obviously ridiculous when players who only had a short unsuccessful spell at a club don't celebrate - Danny Graham - first goal in a year for example.

But even with Ronaldo at OT last year, I thought, "what a fool". I know he was amazing for us and I appreciate everything he did, but Madrid pay your wages now, you love that club as well and you want them to do well. Alright don't go mental in front of the Stretford End, but it's alright to celebrate!

The simple, enforceable offside rule.

Cabaye was offside. If you have to move out of the shot for it to go in and you're five yards from goal, you're offside.

Now, that isn't the rule as such today. If it were the rule, it would be very easy for this stuff to be sorted out and no managers would have to call their opposing manager a coconut. Or whatever he said.

Haha - I remember I'd check it before bed and get excited if it had 8 pages instead of 7 because that meant there was an update.  You'd then find it was just that a Simod Cup match had been moved from a Weds to a Tues.

Another one - teams having the same kit for up to 3 seasons in a row sometimes.

Also I'm sure in the old days if there was the mass handbags the keepers used to run out and get involved, often being the worst offenders (eg Tony Coton).  Now they always just seem to stay in goal.

Here is a big one for me:

Different types of goal nets.  You could always tell instantly where the game was being played due to different colour or different styles of goal nets.  It might be the blue of Goodison Park, or the weird shallow nets of the Dell or Upton Park.    Or odd supporting structures like White Hart Lane/Highbury.  Then in a World Cup all the Argentinian nets would have the same style (with odd black stripes at the bottom of the goal posts?) or Mexico had those nets that went so far back that you could park a team coach inside.

Now all the goal nets all round the world look identical.  I don't know why this bothers me, but it really does.

I'm deffo up for a game when I come for a visit.

You must have had the original version where you drew your players with a piece of chalk on a slate, then.

128 team combined English and scottish cup where I cut out all the teams, did a draw and played them all on subbuteo, putting the slips of paper into the scoreboard and then playing as the better team with your younger borther the worse team

Trying to glue players together after you trod on them by accident, leaning over the grandstand and knocking it by mistake. Trying to make a save with the goalie and moving him so hard that the goal flew onto the floor....

I bought Jake a Subbuteo set a couple of years ago.

His reaction after playing for a while?

"Worst game ever."

I nearly cried.

They were just a strip of plastic which you had to glue to the base.

So almost...

Manchester United behind going into the last 10 5 2 minutes and everyone knowing it's a matter of when not if they will come back.

It was Liverpool of the 70s this was true if.

Never wanted to score too early against them in case it made them angry.

Were Liverpool decent in the 70s then?  ;whistle;

Dad bought a huge box of old subbuteo teams from car boot last year for £5, i went on a collectors forum and I sold one team for £150 alone, there was also a few rugby teams that went for £40-50. Its all about the base and age apparently!

Things you don't see anymore at games is the mass panic before a game when people show up to pay at the gate with cash! we used to have to go early late 80s just to get in on time. Huge queues would form and so many people would panic.

You don't see the Flag (BNP Mag) being sold outside grounds like you used to.

I miss the real banter players would give back to the crowd when they got stick, seems a simple telling supporters the score or celebrating gets you in trouble now!

I have some old subutteo world cup squads.  The ones where you got about 18 players - might pop on the collectors forum and see if they are worth anything.

Got some teams I imagine might be non-mainstream as well like Morroco, Bulgaria and Mexico.

They are probably too recent though from about mid 80s.

I remember a Donny Rovers player, Dino Marmeria (sp fo sure prob not right first name either) turning round and just giving the digit to the crowd once. Conference football <3

Having the crowd either change stands or just move from near the away penalty box at half time, following the action.

Goalmouth scrambles

Dead-ball specialist centre backs like Franck Sauzee and Ronald Koeman who took the penalties and all the free kicks bending them over walls at ridiculous angles.  Now every centre back taking a free kick just smashes it down the middle.

4. A striker breaks clear and is one on one with the keeper. Nowadays the either shoot around or chip over the goalie. Much rarer to see the striker to round the keeper and try to slot the ball into an empty net. In the old days that was the most common imo.

Assume this is because the pitches are kept in much better condition now a days and therefore are faster...etc. Still not uncommon in the bogs of Sunday league football!

You really did have to work hard to manufacture the relation between those two didn't you :) You have decided the straightness of the Puncheon kick was a noteworthy thing about it? This just sounds like abuse to me. If you were looking to hurt me, you have :P

I remember James Scowcroft scored an absolute belter at the Molineux for Palace and there were Wolves fans behind the goal standing and clapping not too long ago (well nearly 10 years now), we had the game already won, so that normally gives the oppo fans more leeway to clap the beauty of the goal. Here is a clip actually, you should be able to see the guys clapping their hands here.

It is 38 seconds in, but as its only a minute, you probably should watch the lot :)

Ha!!!!Trying to persuade my mates that the reason I was sticking with the original pitch that came with the box and not the new fancy astroturf was a political statement against the new pitch types in real football rather than because my Dad was on the dole and we couldn't afford it.  Similarly trying to persuade mates that the team I used was a rare retro Boro kit from the late 60's rather than the one that was in the bargain basement at the toy shop because nobdy in Middlesbrough weas that intetrested in Borussia Moenchengladbachs 3rd change strip in Middlesbrough at the time.
