Title: Opinions Please
Post by: Mondeoman on January 16, 2014, 08:46:33 PM
I played a dubious hand recently in a private game and i'd appreciate some opinions as to what is fair and if anything was out of order.

I'm playing a 5 handed home game with some friends and acquaitances.  I get dealt  Qd Qs and theres about £80 in the pot.  The board runs out
Qh 4s 6d Td Tc  (yeah i know what a life!).
We go 4 way to the river and this is where it gets odd.  One of the guys ("Shane") pulls £500 out of his pocket and declares he's all in for £500.
I query the fact that he can just pull money up but the rest of the table seem to think it's ok
Everyone else folds and it's on me.

Apparently the rules are I can only call if i have the money on me as Shane wont accept an IOU.
I remember at this point I have some cash in the Kitchen and go and fetch it.  I decide to just call as although this guy is not a professional (used to be the local pub landlord)
its a friendly game and i think i might be reverse freerolling myself (too tight not to raise here?).

So i get my cash out to call at which point everyone at the table decide they want a break.  Shane gets up puts the cards in his pocket and leaves the room!
Some 5 minutes later he returns and after a little dwell i make the call.
Shane then appears to muck his hand (although they do not hit the muck).  I reveal my top full house.
Shane then sighs for a bit nods then turns over the  Ts, then after a few seconds he turns over the Th!!!!  and starts doing what i'd term an excessive celebration.

So my questions are am i right to be annoyed?
Should i have raised the river given that i can pull up unlimited cash? (and fold to a 3 bet???),
How can he declare 'all in' considering were playing open?
As he's not a pro am i right to be annoyed at his slowroll and celebration?
Is his hand dead when he takes it off the table and out the room?

In all seriousness, surely he shouldn't be chucking the cards in his pocket and wandering off on a 'break'

All seems like too much of a coincidence to be straight, and I honestly thought the OP was a level.

To answer the questions -

1. Yes that I've probably been caught in a coup.

2. If he has said that he is all in for the 500, I don't think you can do anything other than call (Unless he's got another grand in the other pocket)

3.  I presume he plays to the same rules he holds everyone else, so only has £500 'with him'

4. I'd probably be wondering what had happened, rather than being annoyed at him bouncing about.

5. Yes.

I've never played in big private games, and most of the ones I have played in are based around drinking, rather than passing chunks of cash about.

iPlayer it is then :D

Saw this on eastenders aswell and annoyed everyone by saying what complete bollocks the whole scene was - pretty sure the 'break' was a trip outside to wee against the house and none of them washed their hands either.

Pretty much without exception the etiquette and rules are comprehensively ignored when poker meets tv 'drama'.
Even American made programmes suffer from the same issue with people holding their cards right up to their faces to look at them before announcing
"I call your hundred" pause,
"and raise you this much"
before moving all in by just shovelling their chips into the middle not just splashing the pot but absolutely drenching it.
My wife gives me "that look" when I mention these things. I think I deserve it.

Not sure what this is all about !!

There is no way keith of any other pro or even experienced player would let someone pull up from there pocket ... Remove cards from table or have a break before the hand is over.

There is a joke here somewhere I am sure!

It is a parody of a scene from Eastenders, or Corrie, Lee. Keith is clearly a fan.

Yeah must confess it was not an actual hand I played but was from Eastenders last night.  I'm all for a bit of dramatic license (I didn't even mention the fact that Alfie splashed the pot when he called) but you'd think they might make a slight effort for the hand to comply with some of the basic rules, especially as Eastenders seems to rehash some ridiculous poker story line every 3 years or so (I seem to remember Mark Fowler calling an all in with his Fruit and Veg stall about 10 years ago!).

I guess poker and court room scenes are the two where script writers just decide meh sod it we'll just write what we like.

This is the main problem with the general perception of poker.  One of my favorite questions I still get asked, despite being a SNG / MTT player, what if you lose it all on one hand?
