Title: Quenelle Post by: jjandellis on January 18, 2014, 02:56:50 PM Obviously all over the news:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25788992 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25788992) Thoughts on the whole thing? On the Zoopla response? On the latter I think, from their perspective, its a brilliant win-win move. They get moral kudos, possibly get an immoral individual removed from the club and, somewhat cynically, they may get huge marketing value. They could potentially sever the £3m a year deal yet, from all the uproar, attract more attention to their brand from their stance on the episode than 3 years of shirt sponsorship. Title: Re: Quenelle Post by: Acidmouse on January 18, 2014, 03:29:10 PM Its a Jewish owned company...they want a swift resolution to this. He should have been banned for x games right away instead of this dragging it on.

Title: Re: Quenelle Post by: Karabiner on January 19, 2014, 01:20:13 AM Absolutely agree.
The French FA spokesman immediately condemned the gesture as "disgusting", and the French understand its implications far better which might in some way excuse our FA's tardiness in responding. Title: Re: Quenelle Post by: The Camel on January 20, 2014, 03:30:09 PM Racism aimed towards the Jewish and Gypsy communities in this country is passively tolerated in a way it never would be against Asian or Black members of society.
Title: Re: Quenelle Post by: Acidmouse on January 20, 2014, 03:31:54 PM Well something is gonna hit the fan after they just pulled sponsorship from WBA.
Title: Re: Quenelle Post by: Marky147 on January 20, 2014, 03:52:15 PM Good of them to give WBA the heads up that they won't be renewing, seeing as the deal was due to finish at the end of this season anyway.
Title: Re: Quenelle Post by: Ironside on January 20, 2014, 07:04:14 PM Zoopla get much more advertising from announcing they are not renewing than they would of by paying to renew

I think it's fitting that they make an announcement on Holocaust Memorial Day. I'm only so smart because I saw today it's next week. :) Title: Re: Quenelle Post by: DungBeetle on January 21, 2014, 09:17:47 AM Not sure if I am lacking awareness but I had simply no idea what this gesture meant before the media blew it up. Feels like this minority comedian in France (or whoever it was originated it) got a lot of free promotion by the fuss made and might have been better ignored and just quietly pointing out Anelka is an idiot?
Title: Re: Quenelle Post by: AdamM on January 22, 2014, 08:34:04 AM Have to admit, I was unaware of the gesture until this happened.
Sometimes it feels like we're going backwards at a rate of knots. I hate the French, they're all complete racists ;fishing; Title: Re: Quenelle Post by: Doobs on January 22, 2014, 04:18:31 PM TBF Talksport handled it really well. The French journo they had on refused to even mention his name as he didn't want to give him publicity. He's just been charged: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25823368 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25823368) It doesn't sound like very balanced coverage on the face of it. How do you give a balanced view to such a story? But anyway, perhaps this balances it out (Anelka fights back and the plot thickens): http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25845493 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25845493) Most of the things I have read suggest it is an anti-authoritarian gesture that has been used in an anti-semetic context. Getting an "expert" in who is so incensed that he can't even mention Anelka by name doesn't really sound like a sensible way of discussing it. It feels a bit like the St George's flag to me. You put that in your window, you aren't necessarily a racist... Give the man his hearing, as it doesn't appear cut and dried to me. Please watch this, David Baddiel makes a few good points. Title: Re: Quenelle Post by: luther101 on January 24, 2014, 12:08:40 PM Everyone getting their knickers in a twist because some daft French football player points at a lump of turf.
Is it an anti-establishment gesture? ...... I haven't a clue! Is it an anti Jewish gesture? ...... I haven't a clue! Only Mr Anelka knows really that. Are innocent people getting butchered in Iraq, Egypt, the Congo, Nigeria, Egypt, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia etc etc? ...... Yup, I'm pretty sure of that! You could bet your bottom dollar that the benders at the FA would have crucified the fellah by now if he'd been employed by mere Football League club. It's funny how they appear to enter a catatonic stupor whenever confronting a 'Prembore issue'. They are symptomatic of what pervades all walks of life in 'Modern Britain' today ...... pure unadulterated hypocrisy. There are far more serious things going on around the world that the pompous might do better to concentrate their angst on, than a footballer with half a brain cell. I doubt anyone would have noticed if it had happened in the football league. Not cultured enough, you see?
