Title: Techy help
Post by: RED-DOG on January 25, 2006, 02:57:53 PM
Just got my daughter's new desktop pc from Dell (2 days, wow!)

How do I transfer the data from her laptop onto the new machine?

Depends what it is .. if you don't have transfer software, you could always revert to emailing stuff over.

You have a router right?
Simply log both into the network and run "files and settings transfer wizard" (start>all programs>accessories>system tools), and follow the instructions.

There are so many ways to do this with varying degrees of speed and cost.

Email:   Slow but simple and cheap (unless you have download limits)
Via router or Hub using file transfer wizard - depends on if you have the equipment to do this
Via direct crossover ethernet cable - need the cable and also need to know how to ammend IP details
Burn to disk -  but doubt Laptop CD can do this
External Hardrive - expensive but external hardrives can be an asset.
..........many more ways via serial ports etc.

However probably the easiest way is to use something you may have or can buy cheaply which can be an asset (therefore not wasting money)

IPods can do this,  i think Digital Cameras could even help transfer files (i suppose it depends on Camera)
If you going to need to spend money then one of the cheapest ways would be to buy a USB Pen.  For about £10 you can get 128MB USB 2 pen drive (£40 get 1GB) and use that.  Larger files can be chopped up using WIN RAR software.  May be long winded but it will work and really easy to do.  I have a USB pen,  dont use it that often,  it stays on my keyring and is invaluable when i have needed it.

Hope this helps

What you need to do is to plug her PC into the next LAN port on your router. Most routers have at least 4 network ports. Then windows will automatically detect that another PC has been connected to the network.

What you then need to do is determine the IP address of the new machine. On that machine, go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt and then type IPCONFI.

Simply go to the start menu on the other PC and choose RUN. Then type in the IP address and you will get a window allowing you to transfer files to the other system.

if you go to system restore and go to yesterdays date. or atleast a date before you installed it. restore the system and you will be back to sq 1. then install the new version

I thought that didn't remove programmes, just restored settings

get a registry checker and remove invalid registry entries then reinstall.

Are they both modernish pc's?  If so, get a crossover cable (CAT5) and plug one end in the laptop network connection, and the other in the new pc.  They should talk to each other then
