Title: Q
Post by: RED-DOG on February 16, 2014, 10:48:41 AM
I'm changing my broadband provider from AOL to SKY, the changeover date is the 17th.

Does that mean that AOL will cut me off at midnight on the 16th, thereby leaving me broadbandless until I've configured the new router?

I intend to be playing the pokerz tonight and I don't want to be cut off in my prime.

I should certainly hope so.  It would be very disappointing to learn that such a transaction occurred eventless and problem-free.

Shouldn't need much configuration though, just a case of plug and play and enter the key on your computer for the wifi.

Followed by shouting and swearing when it doesn't work.

What sort go phone you got mr dog? You can piggy back on some smartphones wifi thingy as an interwebs connection. It's called a personal hotspot (basically in emergencies you can use your phone as an internet connection)

We IT pros call that tethering.

Absolutely, this has the makings of a perfect disaster, & the usual Red-Dog 29 page thread of daft questions.

Quite looking forward to it.

I've had a Vodafone dongle as a backup for years and it's been fine, but recently Vodafone merged with 02, which meant that in some areas they now had two masts.

Not wanting to maintain two masts, they promptly de-commisioned one and transferred all the traffic to the other.

Now, there are three possible scenarios for the customer.

1: You keep your original mast and maintain the status quo.

2: You get a new mast that is closer than the original which improves your signal.

3: you get a new mast that is further away than the original which degrades the signal.

Guess which option I got?

Point of Order Mr Dog, that is not quite correct - they are simply sharing their mast infrastructure, (wisely, imo), they are not merging.

There are always a few casualties in these situations of course, & 2xUp & myself both very much hope you are amongst them.

I would suggest you allow one of your daughters to handle the matter for you, your track record does not inspire confidence.

It doesn't help that I will be playing, (Among others) on the Boss pokerz network, which is without doubt the most data heavy software in the Universe.

When I log on to Boss, the street lights in the village take on an eerie glow, and all the icons on my desktop begin to pulsate. It's like plugging in to a nuclear reactor.

Wow, I never realised anyone still played on Boss (aka International Poker Network).

What skin/site do you play on Tom, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm assuming you play there for good reason, of course.

Only play games that end before midnight and make sure your connection is stable before restarting.  Why would anyone do anything else, just so much potential for massively tilting situations.

If you can do the tethering thing reliably then that is different.

FWIW I lost my connection the other night in that fowl weather, so thought aha I can just load up the stars app.  I don't recommend this if you have more than 4 tables.  It will make you choose only 4 tables you want to play.  I also didn't see any indication of what stakes or what level each tournament was on.  Would you like to play tournament #11157352?  Incredibly tilting experience.  Tethering just so much better.

BTW, I watched the Sky poker show last night.

Well, I say watched, What really happened was that my girls had that obnoxious, "No likey, no litghty" dating programme on the telly so I put my headphones on and tuned in to channel 865 as a kind of white noise generator.

Anyway, as I say I wasn't really watching but I did notice that Rob Yong was late. Why was that? He mumbled something about a taxi but when the TV cameras went to wide angle, you could see that he still had bike clips on.

I have to say though, I absolutely loved his suggestion that the software developers should have to give the players their money back when they are dealt coolers as bad as the ones we saw on Top of the Pots.

Also, I was very impressed with the bit where your young lady co presenter person spent at least 5 minutes reading out a viewers question to you while you stared at an iPad. We all assumed that you were reading the same question but when she finished you went, "Eh, wha... Are you talking to me?"

It was a masterpiece of comic timing. I laughed for ages. Well done.

Voda merger adversely affects my phone signal too....

Bollocks!

I wish I could remember to write Rob Yong instead of Rob Young.

And why didn't Tony correct me? He does every other time I make a typo.

Pleb.

I just had to give up today Tom, you are becoming more & more deliberately indurate, obdurate, not to say mulish with your advancing years.

Yong not Young, Channel 861 not Channel 865, Vodafone & O2 have NOT merged.........

What price Red blames auto-correct on his super-duper 'phone next?
