Title: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: The Baron on February 24, 2014, 11:56:09 PM I thought Harry Kewell would be a world beater. I thought Cisse would be better than Drogba. I thought Alonso would be too slow for the premier league. I thought Roy Keane would be a great manager.
What have you been terribly wrong about? Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: bagel on February 25, 2014, 12:27:28 AM wishing luis suarez got the hell out of anfield.
fast forward to now,by far the most promising, not to mention fucking exciting time reds fans have felt for a long time now. wrong, misguided or just plain rose tinted fickle. i go with the latter. not that i will give a monkeys if we keep this up till may. Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: DungBeetle on February 25, 2014, 09:10:45 AM 1994 World Cup.
Talking Colombia up loudly and declared early on that it was not possible for either Brazil or Italy to win the tournament which left me a bit red faced come the final. Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: Dubai on February 25, 2014, 09:18:35 AM Thought Carlos Vela was a future golden boot winner in PL when first saw him. Admittedly he just started to progress his career now but still not to the level his potential promised
Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: superwomble on February 25, 2014, 09:43:27 AM I thought there was no way the FA would allow Milton Keynes to buy a league place for a property development :-(
Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: Nakor on February 25, 2014, 11:25:25 AM Thinking it would be fine to walk from tube to WHL on my own in Arsenal shirt circa 1996, that went well.
Booing John Barnes @ Wembley because everyone else was just before he took that free kick. Refusing to sit down as the Spurs fans sang "naughty" songs about Wenger on Wembley way before the Spuds vs Leicester league cup final - I got quite a lot of grief when I looked around to see about 30000 people sitting on the floor, in fact taking a woman on a date to a team you don't support at Wembley is just wrong. Agreeing to go a first date July 4th 1990 at 19:30. Standing in the Blackpool end with Wigan fans before kick off of an FA cup tie @ Blackpool. Fraser Campbell being a world beater - Saw him tear Norwich apart for Hull in the Championship a few years ago, he looked like he would be amazing. Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: AndrewT on February 25, 2014, 01:00:13 PM Confidently predicting that Juan Pablo Angel would go on to be a better player than Thierry Henry.
Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: booder on February 25, 2014, 01:27:40 PM Daniel Sturridge.
I have eaten a lot of humble pie. Not the only one though...... Daniel Sturridge deal being reported as almost complete. I like Liverpool, why why why why why why why are you doing this deal, he is truly awful. I don't know if 12m is true, but if it is, it could equal the Henderson and Downing transfers in waste of cash levels. Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: The Baron on February 25, 2014, 11:00:04 PM Danny Mills was "potentially" better than Gary Neville. FML
Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: kinboshi on February 26, 2014, 07:17:32 AM I predicted John Welsh would be a future England captain.

Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: Sheriff Fatman on February 27, 2014, 11:18:31 AM We have a new Chairman (ex Man Utd director, Maurice Watkins) and CEO (ex football agent) already this summer so things should improve in the behind the scenes running of the club from the old corner-shop mentality, and of course we have Flicker back in charge with the same backroom team. Our 2013 form was good enough for the top 6 based on the league table from 1st Jan, and we look to be moving in the right direction, so this is definitely the most optimistic I've been for a new season in many a year. Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: celtic on February 27, 2014, 11:26:08 AM Henrik larsson and his funky dreadlocks. 1st game for celtic, he came on as a sub. Gave the ball away which lead to them scoring the winner.
That boy will never make it at celtic. Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: kinboshi on February 27, 2014, 07:36:43 PM Thought Sturridge was a good, but not an exciting signing for Liverpool. We needed a forward who could manage to stand up and kick a ball a bit, so thought he'd fit that bill. An improvement on Carroll, but more of a stop-gap is what I saw him as.
But he's been so much more, as his stats show over his first 33 games for Liverpool compared to Torres: Torres - P33 G24 A3 Sturridge - P33 G28 A8 Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: RED-DOG on February 27, 2014, 07:46:05 PM I thought big Trevor Crutchley wouldn't notice me wiping my nose on his goal-post jersey.

Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: redarmi on February 28, 2014, 02:33:22 AM I wish Nem was on this thread. I'm still waiting for Steve McClaren's big future! :D Steve McClaren took my small town to a European final only twenty years after we were minutes from going out of business and to our first cup win. He did alright in my eyes and given he has since won the first Dutch title in Twentes history and taken Derby from also rans to automatic promotion contenders you could argue he has acheived more in his career than most managers with less resources. Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: redarmi on February 28, 2014, 02:34:25 AM That said in spirit of the thread I thought Tony Mowbray really was the messiah....

Six games into MON's Leicester job, 2-0 down at home to Sheffield United in the second half We then went on an eight game unbeaten run, got up via the play-offs, won two league cups in three finals, played Red Star Belgrade and Atletico Madrid in Europe, were top of the Premier League in mid October and then he left for Celtic ---- "I really don't think this is going to work" when Peter Taylor was appointed and spent £5.2m of the Heskey £11m on Akinbiyi I was right next time! Still think that has to go down as one of the worse £5m + signings in football history relative a) the year in question and how much £5m bought u then and b) how much £5m meant to a club the size of leicester. Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: Doobs on February 28, 2014, 08:23:26 PM Dan Petrescu was one of my favourite Premiership players. Thought he always seemed to be excellent for Chelsea. Thought he'd be out best ever signings, and couldn't believed we got him for £1m. 17 games later we sold him to Southampton for £100k, and I think we mugged them.
A racing thread like this would be about 100 pages long with just my contributions. Title: Re: Things you have been wrong about in football Post by: mondatoo on February 28, 2014, 09:00:06 PM Believed the hype and thought Hugo Viana was going to be as good as Ronaldo.
Thought Gullit was a good appointment as manager. |
