Title: BBC Countdown to Rio Post by: david3103 on March 15, 2014, 08:05:48 AM A sequence of clips from World Cups past, ranging from Bryan Robson's 27sec goal to the Battle of Santiago (linked) all the rest are findable from this one.
Viewed from a distance of 50+ years it's amusing. An open hand to the face can get you sent off these days, back then you could launch a proper left hook and still be on the pitch. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/26225797 This is a better link to all the 100 as they get posted http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/26455673 Title: Re: BBC Countdown to Rio Post by: Ironside on March 15, 2014, 10:54:58 AM Odds on the hand of god and England win in 66 being in top 5?

This is incorrect. They were eliminated on goal difference by the Netherlands, Peru won the group. The Netherlands wanted to avoid qualifying for the group containing Brazil, Argentina and Poland and instead wanted to get into the group with West Germany, Italy and Austria. If they won the group, they would be in with the South Americans. They had to avoid beating Scotland by more than 2 goals so as not to win the group but also had to ensure they weren't beaten by more than 2 goals or the Scots would put them out. |
