On Tuesday, New Jersey’s Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa filed suit against Phil Ivey, a female companion of Ivey’s, and in a separate but related series of allegations, the card manufacturer Gemaco, over $9.626 million won by Ivey at high-stakes baccarat over the course of four separate visits to the Borgata in 2012.

The Borgata, in filing the case, calculated that the game’s initial 1.06% house advantage was shifted to a 6.765% advantage in Ivey’s favor, and that Ivey did not bet the maximum until after a shoe with faulty cards had been pre-sorted, so that the top card in the shoe — favorable or unfavorable — could be determined.

I'm in the camp that it's dodgy from Ivey but ultimately the casino's fault and they have no case against him, same as crockfords. Does seem ludicrous that this happened after crockfords case was public knowledge!

It's just extraordinary that a casino should have any case at all here.

How many poor souls think they have a 'system' that will enable them to beat the house at various games? Wait until there's been 4 reds in a row and bet black on the wheel of doom. 'Count' cards at blackjack live you've seen in the movies? Only here there's a diff number of decks/auto-shuffler/you can't count properly for toffee. Etc.

Just really grinds my gears that casinos and bookmakers, businesses though they are I will concede, are able to claim extra protection versus punters smarter than the average bear with such stunts.

The only way I see foul play here is if Ivey deliberately corrupted a manufacturing process way back down the line, had a dealer in his pocket, or indeed both. And if he did? Good luck to him I say, the casino's greed has done for them here ffs - this all happened AS the Crockfords news broke!!

Depends on law/regulations in the countries.  In the UK, cheating is described as "interfering in the process of gambling" which is sufficiently vague to cover what Ivey admitted doing.

If you were to say use a computer/electronic device / communication device to cheat/get an edge at a game is this now a potential criminal charge since 2007 gaming act or not?

Because the law is so vague I don't think it isn't really possible to say.  But I think there is a big difference between noticing that the cards are marked and using social engineering to persuade casino employees to manipulate the cards so that they are effectively marked.
