Title: chat
Post by: AdamM on June 23, 2005, 12:15:30 PM
I've mentioned it before to Tikay, but this board often operates as if it's a chat room sometimes. While there was understandable concern about the potential for colusion in online games, I till think a chat room facility might be a good idea in the redesign, or if not a running junk thread for random chat.  Infact now I think about it, this could well become that.

I agree Adam and If I could be so bold to suggest (I think I've seen ironside and co mention something like it before) that when the redesign happens there should maybe be separate categories for:

Tourney updates (as normal)
General Poker related topics (as normal)
All other chat (for nonsense chat about everything else happing in the world!)
Site Suggestions (self explanatory)
User Reviews (Let users review poker books theve read, casinos, comps etc)

What does everyone else think?  ;D

There should definitely be a "bad beat" section.

For people who need/like that kind of thing.

I quite like that selection Wall, and Ironside has sent me a nice selection too. But "Nonsense chat" would not work, I don't think, nobody wouild start a thread on that. But a lot of threads become nonsense chat after a while. For which I accept my share of the blame.

But look at it laterally, it's not necessarily a bad thing when threads meander.

We had a thread last week that began on some subject or other, serious stuff, "Odds" I think. And it somehow visited Rolls Royce, NASA, Trains, Hull Railway Station, Derby County, Dr Who, Pension Funds, a bloke driving around in a porch, frozen chickens, Trains, unfrozen chickens, Trains, Share prices, Trams, Party Poker, Trains, and Pig Worming, before returning to it's original point.

But it is your Forum, so your points ARE noted, & in hand. We are determined that blonde Forum does not self-destruct, as another Forum did. Traffic is growing nicely, but we must keep ahead of the game, so yes, there will be a better variety of sections shortly. Steady, sustainable, traffic growth, rather than a spikey graph, is what we want. And better to have a small, quality Forum, than a big one that's out of control, and a flamers and spammers heaven.

When we do Live Updates, the wives & kids of players often tune in to see how their man is getting on, so we do need to keep it reasonably "upright".

We have some announcements to make in the next 24 hours in fact. Tease tease.....

Ariston, Ruru already sent me a PM asking if he or we could spam it. I replied that as it began at 7.30pm, and tonight was a very special night for many of us on blonde, our Cryupto blonde Tourney, with a parallel Live Update, I'd be grateful if he did not do so on this occasion.

I dont mind threads wandering but the trouble is tha I find I'm trying to keep up with a dozen topics and, gods help me if I'm away for a day I have two pages of topics, all with 4 pages of comments to catch up with. a live general chat thread would help seperate the stuff that's spur of the moment crap us all day saddos throw out.

With respect for Adams opinions, the very things he dislikes about the way the forum works is the thing I like most about it

I enjoy having several pages to catch up on, and I love the spur of the moment quips and comments people make in an otherwise serious discussion.

This is a good idea.

IMHO too many threads are dropping down the list before their time.
