i understand many folks here like to take a punt on folks for a sweat on a game of poker, and are happy enough to dismiss the money that has been lost as long as the horse has played well

Now i have a money related proposition:

I need to borrow about 5k untill Feb next year, where i would be happy to return the money plus say 10%

I need the money to be "gifted" to me, if that is the right expression, as it will be used as part of a house deposit (plus fee payments etc) so a history of a genuine loan would not look good on a mortgage application

I have saved almost 7k since xmas, but due to the nature of my contract at work, i will be getting paid a flat wage until around about november, where my wages will ramp up to the figures that will enable me to repay the "loan" without worrying.

Obviously this is a huge trust situation, and will require a lot of information to be passed back and forth, so if anyone does have that sort of money lieing around under the sofa cushions, and would be willing to help a chap out, please PM me.

Why not just wait til you've saved up £5k by February Mick? Asking a forum of strangers if someone can lend you £5k on a trust basis, with comparisons to 'poker sweats', is a bit of a stretch to put it uber mildy. Audacious request tho, and I love the ducks pic.

The reason i'm asking is that there have been a couple of ideal homes that have come on the market recently, but have quickly been snapped up. And had i been in the situation where i had the lump sum to hand, i'd have been the one doing the snapping.

I was in two minds about putting this up as a post, on the one hand i have a certain amount of pride, and putting up what is essentially a "begging" thread is not what i want this to look like, but on the other hand you never know if someone is feeling like they want a punt of a different sort, or even to help out a fellow poker player/military veteran* in a time of need

the situation is simple, i can afford a mortgage, but dont have the deposit, however in 10 months or so i'll have more than enough, but by that time the houses i'm looking at will probably be gone

10% return for such a high risk won't get you any takers I'm afraid.

The thing with staking is that you can lose the lot or potentially get 100x your money back. There's a large risk but you factor that in to the potential large return.

Dismissing the money as being lost when the potential return was £50k is very different to when it's £500.

Have you looked at other ways of getting the money? Are credit cards an option? There's loads of 0% cards out there that will stick £5k in your bank account for a 1.9% fee. It'll go down on your credit report but shouldn't affect your mortgage application as much as a loan.

You might have more chance if you offer to have a £5k charge put against the house in the lenders name by the way. At least that gives them something legal in place to be able to get the money back and makes it much more worthy of a 10% return.

firstly thanks to the mods for letting it run, i wasnt sure

and thanks for the replies, ranging from bugger off, to other options such as CC (we had already thought about this and are changing our payments from full amount, to minimum a month, which will mean a gain of approx 1.5-2k a month), Plenop offering it at 27.5% , someone else wanting 60%, etc etc

and of course the spin up from the nit brigade!!!

I'd also mentioned to the wife that if we were going to just save save save then maybe we'd be as well taking 2-3 to the casino and putting it on a colour, closing our eyes and spinning, she hesitated for about 2 seconds before saying no, was so close there lol


anyway, just checked my house deposit savings, am at 6751, but pay day tomorow, and with minimum CC payments from now on, will see what that figure turns into v soon

Hi Mate,

I work in mortgage underwriting and its likely that only making the minimum payments on your credit card will have an impact on the sum you can borrow and the different it makes is quite telling.  Have you spoken to a broker or mortgage advisor to see if they can get you a Decision in Principle with the outstanding balance as continuing? 

My advice would be to set up an account with a credit union make a few deposits, stick in as much as you can and take out a loan with them as this does not appear on your credit file.  Make sure also that you pay it back in cash rather than SO from your bank account as standing orders are now queried in affordability calculations by most lenders.  Most credit Unions will let you borrow between 3 - 10 times your savings balance on your first loan as long as you can show you can pay it back and its also done without any credit check.   Obvs don't tell them the loan is to be used as a deposit for a house. 

Paid today, juggled moneys around and left enough in the account to pay a large amount, possibly full amount off CC as per above advice

hitting that 10k mark is a huge step tbh, looking at 200k houses so needed at least that much.

but baring poker wins the rate of savings will now drop dramatically to 500-800 a month.

Might be worth getting hold of your credit report if you're planning on applying for a mortgage soon.

It takes quite a while to clean it up and you'll have more chance of borrowing if it's accurate.

It's surprising the damage old, unused credit cards can cause to your chances of obtaining a mortgage.

quick call to the estate agents and my missus will be doing the viewing on her own on monday night as the lady of the house is now feeling better

no my missus is a little worried that she'll be the one doing the lookaround on her own, and is concerned she might make a bad choice, so ive had to point out to her that as i work offshore, SHE'LL be the one loving there, i'll be more of a visitor. So if she's happy, then i am.

anyway, back to work monday morning, 3 weeks bobbing on the sea and playing with that underwater robot, and hopefully i'll get some kind of message from the good lady on tuesday that our offer is under consideration

So, the good lady visited said house for a viewing yesterday, and managed to chat with me about it after work (which is a semi miracle as the wifi inside the oil rig accomodation is shockingly bad)

She likes the place, but had used her head instaid of  her heart and due to the condition of of, decided the most we will offer is slightly below the amount we have agreed we can pay and what the bank has agreed to lend us. Her reasoning being that the house does need some modernising, and some decorating doing to it (expected the decorating) and also it smells of cats???!!!!! baring in mind we have a distinctly stenchful family member ourselves, Monty the English Springer Spaniel, i'm personally not that bothered as fresh paint, cleaned carpets etc will sort that out before our rather whiffy pooch puts his own reek on things.

Anyway, we are now awaiting to see if the estate agents get back to us with news, and whether its good or bad.

If we dont get this one, we are just going to continue saving (and hopefully winning some poker monies again) and keep our eyes open for another one, worst case is that we will have to wait 10 months or so, but by then we'll have had the big paydays that happen in the final 3rd of my contractual year, and our deposit fund will have risen from 10 to around 25k or so, along with 3 pay rises will also mean our market options will have grown too.

well done on getting it sorted.

Just from the west side of Doncaster to the north east side of Doncaster, maybe 10 miles at the most

but, and here's the big but, out of a rented 3 bed terraced house with no off street parking, to a nice 4 bed detached house with garage and extra off street parking

and to top it all off, the eldest is about to go to university, which means we'll have a study in his room, with a very uncomfortable bed in it that he will hopefully not want to come back and live in when he finishes his degree

Beware the smell of cat pee.

I look after the renting of my daughter's house and had a tenant leave it with that stench.

Cleaning the carpets wasn't enough. We tried all the suggestions thrown up by google searches and a few more that came from well-meaning friends.
Eventually we had to lift the carpets, scrub the floorboards, lay down some bicarb and fit new carpets.

We moved in today.

80% of our stuff is here, 2-3 more trips in the dodgiest luton van ive ever hired and we will be 100%
