Title: Mulhuzz's Fiendishly Difficult* RSQ Quiz
Post by: mulhuzz on June 11, 2014, 10:59:27 PM
*Probably not.

Roll up, roll up folks, it's RSQ time again. Entries are being taken until 8pm 17.06.2014 and the reveal will be announced thereafter, but will probably be on 19.06.14 at 8pm.

There are ELEVEN questions. You must answer TEN of them and pass on one. You will score zero for the question you pass. You may not pass question 11.

Your score for each question is the number of people who give the same correct answer. The answer most commonly given is called the sheep. If you give an incorrect answer, you will receive the sheep score +5.

Entries by PM please and include RSQ is in the subject line.

If you fail to put your answers on a single line without question numbering, you will receive a penalty score equal to the highest score given to an incorrect answer in the entire quiz +1.

For example,

This
Is
Correct

1. This
2. Is 3.Not
4. See?

You are not allowed to do research such as Google searches to come up with answers.

In the course of the reveal, objections will be considered. In the event that I don't agree with the objection, I will randomly telephone anyone in my phonebook and ask them for arbitration.

Thinks that's just about covered everything. On with the questions!

=======================================================================================================================

QUESTION 1
There were some elections recently in which this man did rather better than expected and caused, he says, 'an earthquake'.

At a European level, most national parties MEPs band together to form European Political Parties. Name one.

QUESTION 2
I love books. I love prizes. So you can imagine how I feel about the Man Booker Prize.

Give me any winner of the Man Booker Prize since 1980.

QUESTION 3
A Man walks into a bar and says to the barman, 'I'll have ten times what he's having', to which the barman replies 'oh lord, not only is this a terrible joke, but that's an order of magnitude!'  Give me the name of the prefix of any order of magnitude in any direction. For example, I am mulhuzz. If you had 1000 of us, we might be a Kilohuzz.

QUESTION 4
This man died last week. Genuis doesn't even cut it, and he was rather prolific. Can you name any Television Show in which Rik Mayall has an acting credit?

QUESTION 5
With each passing day, I spend more and more time on the internet. Can you give me the name of any of the most visited 25 websites in the World, as measured by Alexa.com in February 2014? If you do not specify a TLD for your answer, I will assume .com.

QUESTION 6
The church is a mildly intersting thing, especially because of the hats. Give me the Papal Name of any Pope.

QUESTION 7
I'm sat in my house and a passing Metro-train just shook the house a little. Can you tell me a station it might be headed to, or from?

QUESTION 8:
Nirvana are the most overrated band of all time, after the Beatles. Give me the name of any track featured on this 'seminal' album:

QUESTION 9:
Animal Conservation and Biodiversity is an important topic. Experts suggest that the current extinction rate is between 1000 and 10000 times higher than the 'natural' extinction rate. So can you name any animal which, according to the WWF, is currently classified as 'critically endangered', or 'endangered'.

QUESTION 10:
I speak a couple of languages and would like to learn more, particularly those which would help me communicate with the largest number of people in the world. So can you name any of the top 10 most widely spoken languages in the world by number of speakers.

QUESTION 11:
Give any answer given by another participant in this quiz, for any question, including this one.

Just to clarify

I could guess and hope I get a correct answer for 1 and 5
No idea 2 or 8 and 7 unless that is a map and I can use one of them I wouldn't have a clue

Good luck with quiz but I will have to pull out

Superb Quiz, Mully, but I shall refrain from entrering in protest at this......

Nirvana are the most overrated band of all time, after the Beatles

The Beatles overrated?

Say that again, & you get a Red Card.

An outrageous thing to say.

7 is indeed a map and all stations on that map are valid answers.

I realise that 2 and 8 are quite narrow questions, but thought it was quite unlikely that someone wouldn't be able to punt at least one and pass another if they needed to - I'm open to changing the questions if people think they are too hard.

@tikay: apologies, thought that might induce a reaction ;) I actually like the Beatles, just, it seems, not as much as the rest of the world ;)

some feedback

very very tough indeed, and likely to put people off entering

particularly inappropriate for a generalist quiz, Q 1 and 2

remainder are guessable, except nirvana. either know that or you don't.

will of course enter, but wouldn't expect a bumper edition sadly

I'm with you on Q1 (pretty sure I've got that wrong), but most people know at least one or two booker prize winners, surely?

think you'd be surprised

last time we had the question, 67.3% of the contestants passed it

not so easy to pass it in this one

It's not meant to be about knowing one or two answers for a question, it's about being able to give at least half a dozen, and trying to pick the best one.

They do at least cover a wide range of subjects and some of them you could take a guess at.

having my first stab at one of these. few of the questions i only know one or two answers for and they are prob the most popular :s
would have liked 2 passes, but made one educated guess

yeah but the idea of a RSQ is everyone should know atleast 3 or 4 answers to every question
you shouldnt ever be getting a question wrong apart from a miss read or deliberately trying to not win
guessing to maybe get one right is for pointless

i for one have never heard of that album not my type of music so that would rule out 1 questions, booker prize again unless your into books you dont follow so that 2 passes needed
question 5 would just be pure guess work question 1 i know of 3 groupings but only vaguely know the name of one does anyone pay any attention to the groupings or do we just slag off our own MEPs for having there noses in the trough question 7 is helped by the map

rest of quiz seems fair too middling with a little bit of wiggle room for everyone

Aight, based on freedback I will change question 1 for sure to something more generalist (but probably still politics) as it is admittedly tough.

Additionally I will expand the Nirvana question to include any record on one of the Beatles albums.

Would people be more likely to enter with those conditions?

Obv don't get sharplea references heh and would have liked to keep it the same but when too of (at least seems to me) people on blonde are telling me it's too tough I'll defo change it.

Accepting further feedback until 9pm and then I'll throw the new questions in after the World Cup match.

I don't know anything about the World cup, but I still had a crack at it, after a little moan, because A: Even people who aren't interested in a particular thing are still bombarded with info all the time even if its only through things like shampoo adverts.

B: If you still genuinely don't have a clue on one and you just write something random, bad do's all that happens is you come last and are publicly humiliated, but you took part and it was a bit fun.

I'd originally planned, if I ever won one of these, to write a program/game to do the scoring etc for me, but working out when answers aren't unique, but aren't the same ('like 'European Green Party' and 'The Greens') is far too difficult for my modest coding ability, especially when I somehow won the one before the World Cup started ;)

Anyway, I promised farce, and that is what I am delivering :p

I know this is a bit soapboxy, but since I have your attention it's worth mentioning. People think the only possible explanation for the exitinction rate being so much bigger than the natural extinction rate is: humans. Something to think about.

Q3: Name a prefix.

Incorrect: 7
Bi - moonandback
Octa - dwh103
Tri - Minttrav

To deal with possible objections: Bi, Octa and Tri, whilst valid prefixes, do not refer to an order of magnitude.

Watchutalkinabout? They're all correct answers.

Can you express any of them as 10x where x is an integer?

That's what an order of magnitude is!

Sorry why have you failed the red wolf? It's on the critical list less than 200 left in the world last time I heard unless something remarkable has happened in last few years it should still be on the wwe list

This gives me a much more respectable 32, can't believe nirvana didn't sing that song maybe someone should write to them and ask them to record it for there next album if they do I will buy it

Yah correct. Didn't see it on list first time roun because it was named Mississippi Valley Wolf in list I was using for reference. This, according to Wiki, is the same animal.

Think the idea of Nirvana having another album is only slightly more likely than the track you suggested being on Nevermind, mind ;)

If you're sitting comfortably, then I'll begin:

Pretty rough start for many, but we shall see what effect that has on the outcome...

Name a European Party:

Greens: 8
Claw75
Longines
Ironside
TightEnd
Nirvana
dwh103
Rubbish
david1303

European People's Party: 1
Mint trav

European Alliance for Freedom: 1
HutchGF

Pass: 0
redsgirl
verndog
willrobrobu
moonandback

Scores after Q1:

moonandback   0
willrobrobu   0
verndog   0
redsgirl   0
HutchGF   1
Minttrav   1
Claw75   8
Longines   8
Ironside   8
TightEnd   8
Nirvana   8
dwh103   8
Rubbish   8
david1303   8

hang on, I didn't pass this, I passed the pope question. so while it means I did 9 points worse it also means that 8others did one point worse... including the winner, but not the runner up!!

In the spirit of 'I told you I'd fuck it up...'

The new quiz is set now, so I don't care, Hutch doesn't care and Longines might care but he already has entries into a quiz far better than mine.

^^^^^ This.

Although declaring me the joint winner will really hurt Rubbish.
