How do you know it's Spanish?

How do you know it's Spanish?

Because they don't pledge allegiance to the King of Spain, like the Dutch do.

Now I'm even more confused, the Dutch pledge allegiance to the King of Spain?

Yes:

(Old) Dutch:

'Den Coninck van Hispaengien heb ick altijt gheeert'

(Modern) Dutch:

'den Koning van Hispanje heb ik altijd geheered'

I have always honoured the King of Spain....

Interesting history the Dutch national anthem. Oldest in the world (lyrics and music, oldest music is Japanese).

Dutch national anthem is 'sung' by William of Orange (he's the I, above) and his 'troubles' the King of Spain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelmus

Technically the Dutch national anthem is sung by a German, praising a Spaniard.

didnt a football commentator recently remark that the spain squad weren't singing their anthem or didn't know it as the camera panned along them pre-game? he was later told it had no words.

Based on performance I'm loving the Brazilian one in the games, what a spectacle that it.

As corny as it sounds I like the USA and Australia ones.  I mean no offense to Her Majesty, but I wish we had one more along the theme of being proud of the country as a whole.

italy for me everytime.  Prefer the nations at the 6nations to football any day of the week.  So much more passion.

Exactly what ours should be. Not singing about a privileged monarch, and instead be singing about the country you're about to represent/fight for.

Hurrah for the internet!

I quite like that we have a monarch and think it should be part of the anthem but only part, not the whole thing.  It should be more about being proud to be British and mention her at the end, like the Home of the Brave part in the SSB.
