Title: RSQ time
Post by: Longines on June 19, 2014, 04:37:48 PM
The reveal will take place on Tuesday 24 June @ 8pm - don't think anything else important is on that night. PM me your answers by midnight on Monday with RSQ as the subject.

Your score is the number of people who give the same correct answer. The answer most commonly given is called the sheep, with the corresponding sheep score.  If you score the only ACE (an ace being a correct answer which no-one else submits) in any round, you will receive MINUS 1 points for that round. I've reused a couple of questions from the last time I did one of these 3(!) years ago.

You are not allowed to do research such as using Google to come up with answers, and you are not allowed to ask others for help with your answers.  Remember, you are only cheating yourself (and your illustrious peers).

If you give an incorrect answer, you will receive the sheep score + 5 points

You MUST pass on one, and only one, question and you will receive a score of 0 for that question.

Q1 A few seemed to like this question first time round so here it is again:

The game of Cluedo requires players to accuse a specific character of committing murder using a specific weapon in a specific room. Choose a suspect, a weapon and a room. If you ace all three elements you will score -5. Ace two elements to score -1.

Q2 I thought Kate would have made the list but it hasn't, maybe Miley has:

Name one of the top 20 baby girls name in 2013.

Q3 My nephew asked me the other day why a duke is called a duke:

There are 29 active Dukedoms (e.g. Duke of Cambridge, Duke of York) in the UK, name one.

Q4 Most mornings I'm in the car at some ungodly hour and listen to Farming Today on Radio 4. Around the same time they have the brilliantly bonkers shipping forecast:

Name an area mentioned in the shipping forecast.

Q5 Took the family to a local Owl and Falconry sanctuary at the weekend - I had no idea there was so many types of Owl - big ones, small ones - some can take down foxes and small deer.

Name a species of Owl.

Q6 Somewhere that doesn't have too much use for a shipping forecast:

Name a landlocked country.

Q7 I have never voluntarily eaten eggs. Can't stand them, the taste makes me gag. Don't care what you do to them, I would heave. So:

Name a way of serving eggs. Just eggs, if any other ingredients are needed, you'll fail.

Q8 Topical question time:

A football score that has occurred in the 2014 FIFA World Cup so far. No teams required, just the score. 9-8 and 8-9 would be treated as different.

Q9 I'm a big F1 fan:

Name a driver who has taken part in a 2014 F1 race.

Q10 I've run out of inspiration so reusing this one too:

Name one of the ten commandments.

Good luck. I'm going to turn the pedantry level up to 11 for the reveal so the farce potential is high.

It surely means that the 17th person altered who wins in a sense in that they've added points to the previous winner, as opposed to the 17th person winning.

Question 1

The game of Cluedo requires players to accuse a specific character of committing murder using a specific weapon in a specific room. Choose a suspect, a weapon and a room. If you ace all three elements you will score -5. Ace two elements to score -1.

No-one said Dagger, Dining Room or Lounge. No-one sheeped all three elements but someone did ace two of them to score -1.

I'm afraid there is. Although I didn't go down that road myself, I am aware that later versions of Cluedo included lots of new suspects and some additional rooms, including a drawing room.

The RSPB thinks that Eagle Owl is a species. The word "species" is used several times here, without any further specification:

should be called by its correct taxonomical name of Common Barn Owl and always is by pedantic QMs.

Someone? The RSPB.

Aye but by the actual definition of species, Eagle Owl isn't one.

Reinforcing The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' use of the term Eagle Owl, Wiki observes that Eagle Owl is a common alternative reference for the Eurasian or European Eagle-Owl:

"The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is a species of eagle owl resident in much of Eurasia. It is sometimes called the European eagle-owl and is, in Europe where it is the only member of its genus besides the snowy owl (B. scandiacus), occasionally abbreviated to just eagle-owl."

Googling balut for someone who doesn't like eggs was fun.

Never heard of coddled, guess I was mollycoddled as a kid.

Grumpily was maybe borderline but in the end irony won.

Farce, question stated "A football score that has occurred in the 2014 FIFA World Cup so far. No teams required, just the score. 9-8 and 8-9 would be treated as different."

2-5 hadn't happened at this point, that happened a day after the question was set.  Anyone who got early entries would be screwing!

*edit* I know no one went for it, but that's because we all knew it hadn't happened yet! Fact it gets a mention means its a farce  :P

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Commandments

The correct answer would have been "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour". Close but no cigar.

And "The Fifth" appealed at first, I always appreciate a bit of lateral thinking. However, there is no definitive fifth commandment as it depends on which version you recognise. And for that reason and because it partially restores my pedantic credentials, it's a FAIL.
