Title: Grand designs! Post by: BorntoBubble on September 03, 2014, 03:35:38 PM New series starts tonight 9pm channel 4 and two of our best family friends are on it! They have built a glass box on the side of a hill in cricceth north wales. I went a few times to help out with painting etc, the skirting boards were my master price so keep a look out for how good they are ;)
Let me know if you are watching and what you think! Don't want to give spoilers away but will happily answer any questions I can after the show! Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: Graham C on September 03, 2014, 03:48:26 PM Thanks! I quite enjoy the program.
One day and all that.... Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: TightEnd on September 03, 2014, 03:49:00 PM how many times did kevin visit from start to finish of the build?
did the TV production team make any demands of the family beyond filming access? Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: BorntoBubble on September 03, 2014, 04:14:08 PM how many times did kevin visit from start to finish of the build? did the TV production team make any demands of the family beyond filming access? Not sure on the exact number of times he visited the plot. They probably had 10-15 at a guess all over like "at work" "on site" etc. They had an agreement that any major things would be filmed and if anything went majorly wrong they needed to call as the film crew would come straight down. Yes, the demands were very stressful. Will go into more detail post show! Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: BorntoBubble on September 03, 2014, 04:16:05 PM Thanks! I quite enjoy the program. One day and all that.... Yeah I enjoyed before and crazy to think our friends are on. We have had two seperate lots of family friends build houses in the past 5 years both would be described as "grand designs" and both have said never again!!! Think the thing I would do if I was doing it was have double the budget and time that I needed when I set out on the project! "Just in case" Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: Graham C on September 03, 2014, 04:40:57 PM Do they get anything for being on the program or is it just the glory of being on tele? Does Kevin offer input or help if they get stuck or have concerns? He comes across as a nice chap.
I don't think I've ever seen one of these development programs that comes in on budget or time, I think I'd definitely have a substantial contingency pot should I ever be in the position to do it. They don't get anything, the advantage is being able to do deals with traders etc to have their brand on channel 4. As far as I'm aware no Kevin didn't have any input, they reported that he was a really nice guy though. They really seemed to get on with him lots tbh and were always visably excited when he was coming to film! Title: Re: Grand designs! Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: BorntoBubble on September 03, 2014, 07:20:00 PM Will they get a follow up in a few years? Was anything mentioned or contracted as such? No idea actually, will ask when I'm home (currently on holiday)! The house is built on the edge of a cliff, I'm sure they will want to go back as it gets closer!! Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: TightEnd on September 03, 2014, 10:03:11 PM This episode is madness.
Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: BorntoBubble on September 03, 2014, 10:30:39 PM Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: BorntoBubble on September 03, 2014, 10:31:40 PM They finished about 3 weeks ago. The last two months were madness basically because channel 4 had said it has to be done on the xth August as we are coming then to film to go out today.
Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: Mark_Porter on September 03, 2014, 10:43:31 PM Stunning property and excellent episode.
Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: Redbull on September 03, 2014, 11:06:19 PM Always loved Grand Designs and enjoyed this one. I think I'd have had a heart attack when they lost 5 metres off the cliff. Don't think I'd have chosen that plot!
Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: TightEnd on September 04, 2014, 10:04:09 AM the end result was a spectacular house to a high spec buying a plot on a cliff edge, with such access problems just seemed bananas to me throughout they think the house has 60 years before it falls into the sea! Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: Graham C on September 07, 2014, 08:10:11 PM Just watched the program, what a lovely house. I do really like the open plan living downstairs.
Is the upstairs modest in size? They had a lot of usable space up there but the bedroom didn't seem that big and the bathroom (from what they showed) didn't look that big either. I wouldn't been keen on not having blinds/curtains or something at least on the bedroom and especially the shower and bath windows! Very brave. Breathtaking views though, I can see why they don't want to interrupt them, what a place. It must be a joy to wake up in the mornings with that view. Do they have two dogs? Hope the cliff holds out for them, it'll be interesting to revisit in a year or so to see how it's holding up. Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: BorntoBubble on September 07, 2014, 09:36:05 PM Was with the family today to play tennis and was interesting to hear some things.
The 60 years for the cliff is incorrect. They have just had a survey done and the worst estimates with the worst global warming effect etc still predict over 100 years, but you dont want facts to get in the way of a good story! A lot of the figures were not right as well again it was to simiplify/make a better story which is a bit disappointing and may spoil future grand designs for me. They were at the house yesterday and apparently the already busy footpath that runs near the house was exponentially busy with people taking photos etc. They let people come and have a look around for a bit as well but they said after 30 odd people in an hour they wanted some peace and quiet!! I need to rewatch the episode at some point. Its always scary to think that all the filiming gets put into like 40 minutes after adverts Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: TightEnd on September 09, 2014, 08:19:54 PM Callum, tell the family they have another project....

Post by: vegaslover on September 12, 2014, 10:25:13 PM I started watching this but thought that they were nuts building so close to the cliff. No way is that lasting 100 years.
Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: simonnatur on September 13, 2014, 06:07:26 PM Saw the programme the other day (not sure whether repeat) where they are renovating and turning an old cinema into a home. Acres of exposed concrete inside - Tikay heaven!
Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: david3103 on September 25, 2014, 12:42:45 PM Just watched this having recorded it.
wow! I'm struck by the thought I have with many of these builds. Absolutely stunning to live in for a period, but I don't know that I'd want to live there longterm. Having said that, I doubt I could ever tire of waking up to that view. Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: TightEnd on September 25, 2014, 12:44:00 PM did anyone watch last night's?
shipping containers on a Londonderry farm? we had a debate, i loved the setting but hated the build Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: brookie on September 25, 2014, 05:28:41 PM go it recorded to watch later
Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: TightEnd on October 02, 2014, 01:26:57 PM did anyone see last night's?
Man alive, I detested it. Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: leethefish on October 02, 2014, 09:17:24 PM did anyone see last night's? Man alive, I detested it. Couldn't agree more .....horrible ! Title: Re: Grand designs! Post by: david3103 on October 03, 2014, 08:22:00 AM Can't imagine any house fitting on that site. What they built was neither home nor workplace and they beat hope that the land becomes much more valuable if they want to recover their costs IMHO
Good TV though. |
