Really enjoyed that Ryan.

It also somehow reminds me a little of the Ivey/Genting case.

To understand video poker addiction, you have to start with the deceptively simple appeal of the game. You put some money in the machine, place a bet of one to five credits, and the computer deals you a poker hand

Not sure the word "video" was needed.

"Regular" poker, with a real deck of cards, or even Online, is amazingly addictive.

Amazing. Makes you wonder what people get away with who aren't greedy. Genuinely mind boggling how they discovered this though.

I know his machine at home didn't "payout" jackpots but it makes you wonder why he didn't practice on it to work out the sequence needed. Great article, the guys could have had an income for life if they didn't get greedy, jackpot a week would have done me.

All these people that do find loopholes seem to be nutters. Always cooking the golden goose.

I suppose the ones that are getting it quietly are the  ones we shall never hear about. I just hope they do exist!

Great read. If only they'd have kept it more lowball they could have bled it for a lot longer!

Precicely this.

We only find out about the ones who are daft or greedy enough to get caught.

Very interesting article.

Brought back memories from my early youth. I must admit I did have a gambling addiction on slot machines back then and would often blow most of my modest wages in Shipleys Amusement Arcades and the like. Thankfully, I weaned myself off this habit very quickly before it took hold. I do know of others though who were weaker and it led to problems for them then, and in later life.

In the late 80's/early 90's there were slot machines around which were a god send to some players. Very easily exploitable if you knew the 'code' to crack them. Two examples I remember well were.....
1) I think they were called 'lite a nudge' and all you had to do to double your win was hold your finger on the button when the win light lit up. You could then double your win four fold. However, this was back in the days when it was only 5p/10p slots, so all I am talking here is maybe £1/£2 maximum win at any one time. Not exactly Oceans Eleven stuff.
2) The next one was called the 'cloud' machine I think. This was a simple process of if you had 2 clouds on win line and one above the win line in the 3rd column, all you had to do would be hold all three lines.....press cancel.....and 3 clouds would always drop on the next spin.

It is slightly worrying I can remember the above TBH.

However, I dont think I have put any money in a 'slot' machine for over 10 years now. a) because I really dont trust myself or the machines and b) they all look bloody complicated nowadays.

Did anyone on here ever have the key for  the machnes i think it was barcrest?  It used to tell you how much was in the hopper and determined whether or not it was worth playing?

The trouble is that if you find your edge, you don't know if you are in a race against time before it gets closed.  Regardless, sitting there and pulling 8 jackpots in quick succession in a tinpot casino might not be the smartest move...

Yeah I had one too when I used to run around doing the fruities, if you found an Arabian Nights/Red Hot Knights/Monty Python's Flying Circus with around £115 (the max was £125) you'd just force it for JP so it streaked.

But the best ones to tell if they were paying were the JPMs like Red Arrows/Arcadia/Casino 5 Liner because if certain numbers span in on the number reel it was guaranteed to pay out. When these stopped coming in you had to walk away.

My favourite ones though didn't have guaranteed ways to make profit - Simpsons Beer Guide/Spartacash. There were loads of tips/tricks for them which still made them very profitable though.

I don't play them anymore but I know a guy who still plays them professionally. It is even more lucrative now the hoppers hold more and they have notes in. But the flip side is that they are updated a lot quicker now as they're connected to the internet for software updates. They used to have to send engineers out to upgrade each one's CPU.

But you're only as successful as your information/contacts as tricks can be expensive to work out yourself. Some were programmed in deliberately and sold down the chain, others are in there by mistake.
