Title: Harsh but.......
Post by: tikay on October 14, 2014, 02:57:39 PM

Townsend voted worst co-commentator on TV

Andy Townsend has stormed to victory in an online poll conducted by The Independent to determine the worst football co-commentator.

The ITV man scooped a majority 37 per cent of the vote for his "constant stream of generic football clichés".

Coming in second was BT Sport’s Michael Owen (23 per cent) and third was the BBC's Mark Lawrenson (13 per cent).

Unsurprisingly, Gary Neville garnered just two per cent to cement his position as the country's top pundit, while Alan Smith had 3 per cent and Niall Quinn had 4.

Perhaps surprisingly, Neville's brother Phil, who had been widely criticised for his early performances behind the microphone, came in fourth with just 10 per cent of the more than 2,500 people who registered to vote.

absolutely spot on.  I would have ranked the top 3 exactly the same.

The sooner Owen gets his training licence, the better!

I always feel a little sorry when everyone gets on the case of a guy doing his best to do his job well.

If blame lies anywhere, it is with those who select him. It has to be said, imo, that ITV's football coverage is abso dire, so that can't help.

It seems to have gone downhill since this man left. Bring him back, I say.

Haha, don't feel too sorry for him, after all, he's not doing it for love. He is no doubt paid very well, and for that, he could at least do a decent job.

Look at Gary Neville, who has surpassed all expectations as a pundit. I had a horrible feeling that we were going to see a United version of Alan Hansen, but I absolutely love the way he is just as quick to criticise United, as he is any other club that warrants it, and is able to look at things without his blinkers on.

Rather than just sit there harping on about the 'Liverpool team of the 80s) like a clown!

Carragher isn't too bad, but his voice annoys me, and he has a touch of the Hansen about him, too.

...and if you think Towensend is bad, you never watched this duo......

Townsend pisses me right off one of the worse things is the way he and Lawro both hark on about England being "us" forgetting that both weren't quite considered good enough to be English players so sneaked in the back door for Ireland.

I am a big fan of Neville, suprisingly as I really disliked him as a player even when interviewed I found him quite boring but he is head and shoulder above every other pundit.

Since Hansen got a mention and he's nota co-commentator I think its oly fair to bring in the likes of Redknapp who I find right irritating.  Hoddle provides good analysis but like Carragher his voice upsets me, even his appearance gets to me.

I like Savage, think he deserves some more airtime and also like Joey Barton, he has done much wrong in his career but he's trying to redress that I feel and when he's done playing he will be a top addition to any pundit team.

I can't believe the likes of Andy Walker, Neil McCann, Davie Provan nevermade it onto that list they are all shameful.

For me the top pundits are the guys that tell you what you can't see from the pictures.

The best pundit for me is Souness and it's not even close.  Such a shame he rarely appears.  Robbie Savage easily the worst.

And could say what they liked because England hadn't qualified and foreign internationals didn't play here. ;)

Kmac, not seen Barton's recent work on Twitter, he's not doing a good job of redressing things.

Even though he's not a commentator I can't stand Alan Shearer as a "pundit" on MOTD, he offers nothing.

Savage wins worst pundit hands down. Awful. Says nothing but thinks by shouting it he's being controversial.

Correct. Quite a "legend" in his time.

Owen is by far the worst for me. Easier watching with the tv on mute when he is commentating

I'm amazed most that 2% voted for GNev. Even the most hardened of Citeh/Pool fans must surely recognise he isn't terrible.

Gaza would have made an entertaining commentator! A trick has definitely been missed there
