Title: 1 - 2 day events play the 1 day or the turbo
Post by: mikeymike on January 26, 2015, 08:17:18 PM
Hi

Would like some input on the following,

I shall be going to play the £100 dtd sky event in February, how much difference is there in playing a 1 day to get to the second day or is it better to play the turbo that leads into the final day.

When i go to these events i tend to look at the average stacks that have been posted in the early one days, when i get to say level 12/13 i then say to myself right i want to be holding a stack above average and so i go from been a tag to a complete lag even when i have an above average stack.

Cheers

Much better to play a normal day 1 than a turbo if u can. It's actually quite tough to accumulate chips in the turbo due to the number of hands you play

playability aside (will defer to the reply above) the answer is "it depends". the turbos have been very popular in "regular" dtd events, part of that will be it can lower expenses considerably..save on a hotel the night before, play an event as a one-dayer etc etc...depends where you live, what your budget is

From a purely ev point of view when you include expenses or w/e its almost certainly going to be better to play the turbo. It's true that the average stack going through from the turbo but that is counteracted by the fact you're less likely to bust the turbo. You're expectation purely from the tournament will be a bit higher in the reg speed day 1 but nowhere near enough higher in a £100 to warrant an extra day in a hotel or 20 quid more petrol or whatever

This.

Live turbos sound great in theory, but the players don't play any quicker than a regular tournament and you are left with a complete crapshoot.

encourage the dealers to keep the game going at a decent rate

and maybe it's time to introduce a 'shot clock'?

People tend to make decisions fairly quickly and Dtd have the best dealers around so they do keep the game moving but it's the nature of these stacks. U just end up going 4-6 ways to most flops and hands take longer as a consequence

And Dtd did try and introduce a shot clock and it was shouted down by the locals

A shot clock is the only solution. Most dealers can't be arsed to run the game properly.

But even so, the time it takes to collect the cards, shuffle and deal is still too long for a live Turbo to be worthwhile.

I played one at the Crown in Melbourne on a computerised table with animated cards. That worked ok.

Meh. The locals are idiots then, they probably moan about the game turning into a crap shoot at the FT too.

Maybe it's just the style I like but I much preferred the turbo's when I have played them, going straight into day 2 is quite good, even if u don't have as many chips as the big stacks. Obvs there is the "depends" aspect, some it suits some it doesn't.
