There is something about Mrs Coren-Mitchell that I find quite endearing, I like her wit, I think she has a natural beauty and although she is "famous" outside of poker as well as in it I find her quite a level headed down to earth sort of person. I've never met her but feel like I've known her all my life. She seems to be wonderfully happy with her life. She would be first on my list to invite to a dinner party.

Very close to my favourite poker player - certainly in my top 3.

So I look forward to a piece in the Guardian mourning the demise of the all male status of the R&A and Augusta, because golf is only a game and not important.

I love Vicky to bits but I don't agree with her in this instance. Ladies only events are OOO IMO.

Why is Vicky playing, is it because the field is really tough and she won't intimidate anyone?

OK - so maybe, maybe it is true that technically speaking you dont have "mens only" events so you shouldn't have "womens only" events, tough to argue with that on a black/white perspective...

BUT seriously, why does anyone give a fuck? SO there is a tournament that just women can play? Who is really offended? As vicky says its such a tiny spec on the scale of global injustice that even considering being upset about it is pretty ridiculous, no-one stands to gain at all really from it is JUST a bit of fun.

I know some people want a world of absolute social balance but that is as unrealistic and it is impractical.

Would it really take much more than whoever is running the cage telling the men trying to buy in to do one to stop this?

Legally, in France, due to "anti-discrimination" laws which been been ham-fistedly drawn up, there is nothing to stop chaps buying into Ladies events, or 18 year olds buying into a Seniors event. It would be illegal to prevent them playing.

Bolded part nails it for me, if a womens only event makes women enjoy the game then this is surely a good thing.

It's only a good thing when there can also be a men only tournament without the inevitable bitching...

The women's only event is just a name - it's a tournament that men can enter but which will be mainly women.

The equivalent for men is every other tournament.

A much more sensible response than the post deserved.

Then remove the ladies name from the event, fairs fair and all that.

The article half-heartedly touches on the notion that they could be making a political point. I would be jawdroppedly astonished if the majority were doing that. The real issue is money.
 
The tournament organisers have money going in through entry fees and money coming out through a prizepool. John firmly believes he has a +EV return for entering a specific £1k tournament. There is no lawful reason why he can’t enter that tournament. The casino hasn’t barred him. Why should anyone be allowed to bar him from entering a public tournament and realising his EV? Morally, we can call these attention seekers donuts all day long, but that’s all there is to it.
 
There are two problems: John and money. John won’t leave, so, take the other problem away.
 
If there is no entry fee, make it an invitation only event. The organisers can choose who they want to invite. “Entry is by invitation only, I’m afraid, sir”.  It can’t easily be called the Ladies’ Event (please note the apostrophe) without invoking the risible but technically viable discrimination argument (which laws are supposed to be a shield, rather than a sword).

There isn’t anything to be gained by entering a tournament with no money. If it is purely designed to encourage more women to play the game, what better way of doing it? There could be a trophy or a donated prize by the sponsors, but, with no actual prizepool, the casino’s resolve to offer a tournament it isn’t raking demonstrates it actually cares about promoting women playing poker.

“I understand there’s a club around the corner with a poker game in the ‘Gentlemen Only’ room this evening. Perhaps sir would like to take his argument up there? Or perhaps sir would care to inform Peppermint Hippo on his next visit that only ladies seem to be frequenting the stage?”

 I have no doubt most if not all blokes playing will be doing it for +EV reasons, thats just poker players for ya lol.

If all my mates had a whip round and offered me £500 to wear a dress, high heels and make-up on a day out in town I would politely decline. It might well involve money, and it might well be +EV, but I'm not that desperate for money that I need to look like a tit to get some. These 22 fellas look like tits really.

They ran a men's event with the same buy in at the same time.  Nobody was stopping men from playing in the EPT or from playing poker at the same time.  

This is not the same as the men's only R & A or a white's only Augusta that existed in the past.  

If people had an important political point to make they would pony up the 10k and play the women's event at the WSOP.   They don't.  

Funny this gets more publicity than the youngsters playing the senior's event.   Ageism is more acceptable than sexism I guess?

Twenty two random punters turned up and played a Ladies' tournament. Its a bit of a shame the women didn't get to play the event they registered for, but I highly doubt any of the men who trying to be malicious in anyway, and they just fancied a game of poker. This post would have been a bit more powerful if I hadn't just read about the "mens" event, but any mention of +ev and these random french guys just seems way off the mark. The photos I saw showed mainly 50 odd year olds, they probably just wanted some family pots for once. Same goes for the eighteen year old in the seniors event. It was probably the most convenient event for him to play. I hardly think hes spent the last 3 years preparing in a rocky esque training montage for this 300 euro seniors event. He'd probably be surprised/mortified by the uproar his entry caused!
