See to me it's clearly blue and black - had to double check i hadn't slept through til 1st April when Dan told me he sees white and gold - weird but cool!

That's what I thought - also their explanation would surely mean that this would be a fairly common occurrence (?), but I can't think of any other time where different people have seen such radically different colours on a picture.

I think that's the weirdest thing about it, but i guess in other cases where the same might apply there has simply been no need for anyone to comment on the colours of a photographed object. i still don't really understand why the science doesn't apply across the board

It looks like when you take a bad photo of snow and it goes a bluey colour.  You can still tell it's white but it has a blue hue due to the bad photography.

I looked at it here this morning and saw white and gold.  Just opened up the bbc website on the PC and it was blue and black.  So went back here to check if it was still white and gold, but now I see blue and black here too.

Very freaky.

Reckon it's some huge wind up by an IT pro who has fixed the pic to show differently on different computer/devices, depending on what settings you have on it or something along those lines. WP however they have done it, not buying the original theory put forward, this discussion would have cropped up before now if that were true.

White and gold to me in that photo, very weird that 6 people can look at the same photo on the same screen and half can see blue and black, and the other half see white and gold.

Claw the question in the poll needs changing though really - I KNOW the dress is blue & black, but it looks white & gold in that photo to me.  I guess you want me to answer 'white & gold'?

The results on here so far are overwhelmingly in favour of white and gold, whereas elsewhere it seems to be more split down the middle - i wonder if there is some kind of gender bias?

Now that's wierd. I've been seeing it White and gold up to now on PC screen in my office,
Then saw it on IFL scienc on phone/facebook, now back on here in swing black and blue

Sometimes she sees it as white gold and does not believe me when I tell her it is the same photo as before.

She then looked away for a second and it switched again for her and she now thinks I am trying to send her mad.

Weird, have spent the last few hours under artificial light, and it was very light outside when I first saw the pick.

It is unambiguously blue  black to me now. I cannot convince myself otherwise. The opposite was true earlier, in daylight.

i saw it that way at first, it was gold and white and there was no chance that the 'gold' could ever be black.

i flipped after seeing the pic at the top of the wired article at night and i cannot see any white or gold now. and cant even see how i saw it that way in the first place. its blue and black, no question.

also i originally thought the photo was taken outside, now it looks to me to be unambiguously indoor lit. it was a bright morning when i first saw the pic and at night when i looked at the wired article and suddenly flipped, never to return.

very telling about how our perception is a shitty objective judge on reality at times.

I may be slightly obsessed with this.  Been having a play about in paint and have scribbed on the picture in colours as close as I can get them to the shades I am seeing.  Question for the gold/whities - do the shades in the writing merge into the gold/white you see, or can you see the writing clearly contrasted against the white/gold?

If you squint your eyes and focus just on the dress rather than the background, you can change it from white/gold to blue/black.

I see the word gold on the black part and the word white on the blue part.

Pretty quick on the fastest finger Alex to catch that photo on your phone if it was the first time you spotted the rogue card.  Kinda shows how on auto pilot most dealers are doing their job to not even notice that.

The picture was taken when the dealer was showing the floor what happened so it wasn't that hard to catch it.

saw this few days ago and thought how the f*** can anybody see the dress as black and blue.

 by leaning forward in my chair getting closer to the screen i see white and gold, then when i sit further back in chair and  it goes black and blue.

also changes from white and gold to blue and back by adjusting angle of laptop screen.
