Title: Touch typing test. Post by: RED-DOG on March 08, 2015, 09:33:42 AM The letters on my laptop keyboard are almost worn away, so I thought I would have a go at touch-typing to see if I could manage when they are gone all together.
Starting with one index finger on shift, the other on the letter O and looking at the screen only, this is my attempt at typing that well known phrase, 'One of my sausages is missing'. One od mhy siaheve3s is nuwwibher. Can you do better? Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: Simon Galloway on March 08, 2015, 10:03:30 AM Yes (but I can't strip down a 1974 Cortina and build it back up..)
Left hand on ASDF and right hand on HJKL to start with. I'm sure there will be some freeware to teach you to touch type, I taught myself at college, it really doesn't take too long to get to the stage where you aren't even thinking about letters, your fingers just go there. Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: BorntoBubble on March 08, 2015, 12:14:01 PM I think my of the younger generation will be able to do it we have grown up typing nowadays. We have a girl who was professionally a "typist" when we first employed her about 15 years ago. It wasn't till about 5 years after that I first touched a keyboard. She can spell better than me but I think I'm probably a few words a minute faster than her now touch typing and I've never been taught just learnt after consistent use

Re: the spelling Tom, for touch typing the spelling isn't that important. You get typed out what you need and then just spell check at the end. Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: lucky_scrote on March 08, 2015, 12:52:30 PM Yeah I always touch type. I only ever "sometimes" look at the keyboard for the first letter and go from there. I don't really have my fingers in a uniform manner, they are kinda all over the place. I also don't user my ring or pinky.
Touch typing with eyes closed: One of my sausages are missing. Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: lucky_scrote on March 08, 2015, 12:58:04 PM Fun little test for characters/words per minute. Very simple: http://typing-speed-test.aoeu.eu/?lang=en

Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: Kmac84 on March 08, 2015, 01:53:20 PM been ages since i done any sort of touch typing but i managed 42 wpm - is that fairly respectable or what?
Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: Ironside on March 08, 2015, 01:58:23 PM Wow red you got it right first time? How many letters per minute?
Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: theprawnidentity on March 08, 2015, 02:08:26 PM Your score: 307 CPM (that is 61 WPM)
In reality, you typed 313 CPM, but you made 1 mistake (out of 61 words), which was not counted in the corrected scores. Your mistake was: Instead of "vowel", you typed "vorel". Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: Marky147 on March 08, 2015, 02:14:24 PM I did a typing speed test and scored 414 CPM = 83 WPM (with 0 mistakes!) at http://typing-speed-test.aoeu.eu/
Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: Karabiner on March 08, 2015, 02:48:05 PM 113 CPM = 23 WPM :(

Your score: 639 CPM (that is 128 WPM) In reality, you typed 655 CPM, but you made 3 mistakes (out of 120 words), which were not counted in the corrected scores. Your mistakes were: Instead of "self", you typed "seflf". Instead of "bird", you typed "bhird". Instead of "need", you typed "nee". :'( :'( Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: Ironside on March 08, 2015, 09:36:56 PM i think we need a sweepstake on Ironside taking the test WPM and mistakes?
Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: vegaslover on March 08, 2015, 11:03:03 PM your score 192 CPM (that is 38 WPM)
I'm very rusty, but that test seemed on the easy side for a typing test Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: Jon MW on March 09, 2015, 12:22:24 AM your score 192 CPM (that is 38 WPM) I'm very rusty, but that test seemed on the easy side for a typing test Online touch typing tests always tend to be on the easy side. I've had quite a few in the past from employment agencies and they're usually a lot more thorough. I think my of the younger generation will be able to do it we have grown up typing nowadays. We have a girl who was professionally a "typist" when we first employed her about 15 years ago. It wasn't till about 5 years after that I first touched a keyboard. She can spell better than me but I think I'm probably a few words a minute faster than her now touch typing and I've never been taught just learnt after consistent use We've had a few young people do work for us over the past couple of years, the impression I get from them, and others I know, is that the younger generations of those at school or just leaving school do have a lot of practice typing and can often do it quick - but it's not touch typing. It's just pretty fast 2 finger typing. The problem is that this tends to mean a lot more typos (and spelling mistakes if you never learn to spell that well). However quick it is initially, it's very unlikely to be faster than if the same person can touch type properly and spell checking afterwards pulls down the speed a massive amount. I think they actually should specifically teach touch typing in school - I was taught it in a business studies lesson; but it wasn't on the curriculum - our teacher was actually really old fashioned. As it happens she was spot on and I think it would be ideal if it was actually taught as a basic skill early on in secondary school. Title: Re: Touch typing test. Its really hard to talk about typing while typing, has anyone found this? What ive found from work is that "professional typists" know a hell of a lot of keyboard shortcuts. Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: Marky147 on March 09, 2015, 12:46:48 AM I had to learn when I was on CT course in the Navy, so got pretty good quite fast.
Then wasn't using comps much when I left there, but started playing Poker in 2004, and have been plotted up at a PC in some way or another ever since. Title: Re: Touch typing test. Post by: Claw75 on March 13, 2015, 10:35:42 AM Can't compete with Titbean. Used to be able to hit 100wpm back in the day but rustier now - still pretty pleased with this:
your score: 391 CPM (that is 78 WPM). In reality you typed 394 CPM, but you made 1 mistake (out of 86 words) which was not counted in the corrected scores. Your mistake was: Instead of "an" you typed "anm" |
