Has anybody done the Myers Briggs course before?

I went on it yesterday and enjoyed it. Some follow up sessions to come. It’s all about finding out your default personality type based on a number of key factors like introversion/extraversion, think with head/heart etc.

I don’t really like the ‘let’s put everyone into a box’ type psychology but this was interesting.  You can get hold of the tests online although they are not ‘official’ as such. I am an ENFJ.

I've done a few of these sorts of things, as I've worked for the best part of a decade in places that are quite keen on NLP and Myers Briggs.

I think there's a mixture of vacuous flimflam and insightful analysis. The problem is working out which is which. That's down to the individual to find their own truth and I suppose the hardened MBers will tell you that depends on which colour you are :D

Ive worked in Hr and recruitment for 16 years and MBTI has been around since way before then. There is hardly a week goes by without it being referenced in conversation. Ive sat it a few times and run team sessions using it.

Its a great tool for understanding yourself, personality type, but also the type of others in order to be able to know how best to interact with them, why they do what they do and what their preferences are.

I could probably tell people what they are having spent half a day with them wihtout getting them to sit the test.


fwiw i am an ENTP or ESTP but have some strong I (introvert) tendancies.

I failed.

I got ENTJ.
What does that mean then?
Does it help find out what kind of job you'd be more suited to?
Do employers actually take any notice of the results?

ENFP. In the big 4 consulting world it's given a huge amount of credence. One of our internal courses is built on team performance and even though I'm very sceptical about these things normally the insight into how the other MBTI types think and act was interesting.

I'm an absolutely textbook INTJ.

I've never noticed it being something employers took notice of, but then I've worked in a less regimented industry - it's more useful for people to just understand more about themselves. I found it particularly useful as INTJs are quite extreme personalities and it was good to find out that my personality type is just the way I am, and that I'm not just going out of my way to be an abrasive arsehole.

Thank goodness I have a strong leaning towards ENFJ, or there'd be little to choose between me and Maggie Thatcher.

I would say "Amen, brother", but we hate other people too much to be in a group.

My only extreme type is my ‘F’. It gets dumbed down a lot at work as I think it can often be perceived as weakness. I.e. the person that always takes things personally and doesn’t think logically.

What it actually boils down to for me is just a genuine interest in other people. Also will do everything to avoid confrontation and maintain harmony. Couple that with an obsession with self-help and self-reflection.

It certainly makes you realise just how different everyone is and how they process information.

i last did this test about 10-15 years ago and every time I'd score as a definite ENFP. Interestingly now I'm an INFP, but with only moderate or slight preferences on each category. I wonder how much that is due to a change in my personality, an acceptance of the 'real' me as I get older, or just differences in self-perception? Interesting stuff.

Goddam introverted planners, sitting there on your own thinking about things! Takes the fun out of making quick judgements and flying by the seat of your pants!

Or maybe it's the fact that as you get older your eyesight is going, so you're ticking the wrong boxes?

Having given it at least three minutes solid thought I definitely *am* more introverted now than I used to be. My best guess is that I always have been naturally that way inclined, but in my younger days I definitely felt the need for validation from others to a much greater extent than I do now, so I think that's where the change is mostly showing up.  I used to sulk at having to miss any social gathering, but nowadays i much prefer an evening in front of the telly (pipe and slippers optional).

I can't remember the exact personality type, but the senior manager was very keen that the team as a whole was that type and her managers were that type and surprisingly (not) that was exactly the result that came out.

I was the introverted techy bastard type (whatever that one was).  Will see what I am now prob worse I would think.

Having a team of the same type, simply isn't a team.

It wasn't that the team were all individually ESTJ or whatever but the mix of the various personalities all contributed to a team personality of ESTJ....

No one likes an abrasive arsehole.

ENFP. I am sure if I did the test again it would come up with a different result.

Done similar things at work before and everyone can guess what the result is for most especially me :)
