Title: Which one would you do for money, if any?
Post by: RED-DOG on March 24, 2015, 10:53:15 AM
£150,000: Wearing your seat belt and driving a Ford Focus, hit a telegraph pole head on at 35mph.

£350.000: As above, but at 50mph.

£1000.000: As above, but at 50mph with a 1 pint per minute leak in the petrol tank.

Not on purpose but i wouldn't think twice about doing the £150k challenge.  Not so sure about the 50mph one.

If I did the 50mph one I would do the leaky tank. I don't think cars explode nearly as often as the movies make out.

I'll tell you one thing i won't be doing

120mph in to a wall in a Focus

Option 1 would be fine, I think £150k would come in pretty handy right now.   Not sure 50mph but then it's only an extra 15mph so maybe.  Then again,I agree with Red about the leaky fuel/explosion so I may as well do that too.

I think I'd be pretty nervous knowing I have to crash regardless of the speed.

Would you do it if you had to do them in order?  Like in Who Wants to be a Millionaire, you've won £150k but the option is there to go for the £350k, then crash again for the million.

As a Fiesta driver, the first one is the only one I could actually do if I wanted to

Definitely the £150,000 one.

Brand new Focus?  If so, then go for the million.  Are we allowed to wear a helmet as well?

None.

Is risking your life really worth a few quid?

I'd rather be alive and skint tyvm.

First wooden pole test is as ~44mph, second at ~56mph

wouldn't be keen on either, but how old is the video and the cars?

what would a modern brand new design do at those speeds? (rheotorical question)

No brainer for me - i actually find milliband quite attractive tbh.

Out of interest would the toe be raw or cooked? Would you have to eat the whole lot - nail, bone etc or just the flesh?

Would like to see the look of the random passer by that lost the toe as you whip out a camping stove and fry it up.

Yep this for me as well.

You can pretty much guarantee that everyone who said they'd do it would bottle out at the last second as well. Not saying that's a bad thing, it's just survival instinct.

Vid was uploaded in 2013, could be much older though.

I think I'd strongly consider 1 and would definitely not go for 2 or 3.

At 35 I can't imagine much can happen to you in a modern car. Once you get to 50 though it feels like you could run bad and end up getting legs crushed and stuff with makes it a no brainer no for me.

My assumption that nothing that bad could happen at 35 has no basis in experience or facts though, could be way off

£350.000: As above, but at 50mph.

£1000.000: As above, but at 50mph with a 1 pint per minute leak in the petrol tank.

Good question.

My first requeste would be that a machine has to regulate the speed, I wouldn't want to be strung up on bottling it at the last minute, still taking the impact but not getting the beans. Second request would, naturally, be that the tank be as empty as possible!! (Weight plus fire risk).

Gut feel suggests to me that (1) isn't really a concern at all. The car with me in it is about 1,400kgs. The speed is about 15m/s. Someone who recalls GCSE physics better than me can fairly easily calculate the momentum the car is carrying and therefore the impact/energy of the crash. Would be v surprised if this crash isn't considered 'safe'.

(2) and (3).....if I am doing (2) I am doing (3). Concern though is with the extra speed the impact of the (relatively) instant deceleration is that much more pronounced. I would want to do some serious homework on this one but I *think* I would be up for it provided one is allowed to take the impact to the passenger side of the bonnet. Pretty sure the petrol leak is, to all intents and purposes, a red herring?

The speed difference doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a big difference in the amount of energy involved.

E=½mv2

It's that squared bit that makes the difference. We're not too concerned about the momentum of the car itself, that's largely irrelevant. We're going to be strapped in, airbags in play, etc. Assuming we hit it straight on, then the engine block is going to impact the pole and the car is designed to crumple in a "safe" way. If we've got a helmet or goggles on, our eyes should be safe from glass and the danger is the forces acting on our internal organs. Basically, they're travelling at the same speed as the car and decelerate to zero in a split second. The forces involved there are pretty substantial. They're a lot more significant at higher speeds though as the organs' kinetic energy will be significantly more than at 50mph compared to 35mph.

Still think that if you're kitted up like an F1 driver, it's doable.

If you've ever been driving on the motorway at a high speed and then have to go through a 50mph zone it feels dreadfully slow. There is no way that anyone even considering doing 2 or 3 realise how fast 50mph is. You can definitely die at that speed or fairly likely receive an injury of some sort.

Number 1 isn't so bad if it were with a seat belt, but I don't think I could do it without. Possibly offer me £20-£30k and I would do it with a seatbelt.

Has anyone been in a car crash at direct impact at such speed? I was in the passenger seat of a corsa when I was 17 and went into the side of someone decelerating down from about 50mph to around 30-40mph (Call it 35!). The Corsa was amazingly written off with petrol all over the road and the front end of the car crushed heavily. The reality was, it didn't hurt one bit. We braced, had our seat belts on and I barely felt much force.

Without a seat belt however, I could have gone through the windscreen, lost an eye or whatever. The airbags might not deploy either, they didn't in my accident!
