RIP

One of the best broadcasters across any sport, imo

Was a journalist before he became a cricketer, then re-trained to be a broadcaster. He was brilliant at it too

As Aggers says:

He was the face of my childhood and for millions of others. He was cricket on the TV in England.

A true great of broadcasting

RIP

Very sad to hear of his passing. He was cricket commentary on TV to me, growing up.

Mr Benaud was the voice of cricket for me growing up watching it on the BBC.
Absolutely peerless imo
RIP

Everything said above.

He is my first memory of cricket, with his clipped tones, head slightly to one side, always immaculately attired in a suit, shirt & tie.

No shouty wouty stuff ever, just matter of fact.

Every time I hear that calypso Test Match music, I see him in my mind.

A credit to TV, cricket & Australia.

A tidy cricketer, too, nearly 12,000 runs at an average of 35, & close to 1,000 wickets @ an average of 24.

He remained active until late in life, only 18 months ago he had a bit of a prang in his vintage car.

I saw 2 lovely quotes from Richie Benaud's commentaries.

He never shouted, or got excited, always softy wofty, & understated, very much in the style of Henry Longhurst.

"...and Glenn McGrath dismissed for 2 runs, just 98 short of his century"

"...he's not quite got hold of that one, it's a six, but if he had, it would have gone for nine"

Most of the broadsheets carry fulsome Obits of the great man today.
