This is terrible news.

As a young man many of us idolised Jimmy.

Pretty sure this photo was at Stamford Bridge, with the greyhound tote board in the background.

Let's hope he pulls through.

Not my era for when he played but "Saint and Greavsie" was compulsive viewing on a Saturday lunchtime.

Great board game as well as a kid 'Saint and Greavsie'!

Loved that show.  A feature on Marseille and saint unable to speak because he's laughing so much as greavsie goes on about the French connection.  Makes football focus look so dull.

All the best greavsie.

Great article by Martin Samuel , by far and away the best sport's journalist.

Lovely piece, Jim, with some great photos.

My Grandad used to take me to Stamford Bridge, & I saw Jimmy in his first game. The game, v Man U, was billed as "Busby Babes v Drake's Ducklings". I expect my memory is playing tricks, but I have it in my mind that the attendance was 80,000.

The Stadium looked a bit different in those days, of course.

I'm pretty sure that Stamford Bridge's attendance record is 120,000+.

I'm pretty sure that Stamford Bridge's attendance record is 120,000+.

Officially, Chelsea's highest home attendance is 82,905 for a First Division match against Arsenal on 12 October 1935. However, an estimated crowd of over 100,000 attended a friendly match against Soviet team Dynamo Moscow on 13 November 1945, according to Wiki.

Did you go to the Moscow game Ralph? :)

It's a scary photo, Trev, but it was not at all unusual in those days to see fans hanging precariously from floodlight pylons, on roofs of adjacent houses, on top of the stand, all sorts.

Ex-England and Tottenham striker Jimmy Greaves is out of intensive care after suffering a severe stroke on Sunday.

His family say the 75-year-old is able to sit up in bed, adding that while he is "by no means out of the woods there is room for cautious optimism."
