Title: Which is the best Internet Browser? Post by: simonnatur on May 14, 2015, 02:18:59 PM I was getting fed up with Chrome which was bringing my laptop to a standstill - does anyone else have problems with it?
I typically have about 25 tabs open at once and have switched to Opera (only last 2 days) since when everything is working perfectly. Would recommend it based on my experience so far and it's free. http://www.opera.com Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? 25 tabs is an insane amount though! Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? Is this free to install? I use Chrome and it has been really slow recently especially on betfair. Any chance of a link that i can just click 'download' on to make it simple for me so i don't fuck it up! Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? Can't be doing that every 5 mins. Will take longer than the speed gain i would imagine. Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? Post by: DMorgan on May 19, 2015, 02:32:11 PM You can whitelist certain sites so that it never kills pages that refresh themselves like Betfair. It'll kill (ie stop letting them use processing power) blonde pages that you've need to refresh anyway to see new posts.

How many, roughly, do most people have open? On my Laptop, I tend to have 10 or 12 most of the time. On my I-pad, I currently have 27 open, which is about my normal amount & it does not seem to affect performance at all. If I use a site regularly, it saves me opening it every time. Now tell me I'm doing it all wrong..... I might just start a Thread "which tabs do you have open regularly?" & ask people to list them. Nobody, nobody, could ever guess most of mine. And no, there's no mucky sites. ;) Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? Everything still working fine now I've switched to Opera. Could be worth giving it a go Arbboy, if you're having issues with Chrome. I suspect my issues were connected to flash player hogging memory. I discovered after I laboriously copied all my settings over, that Opera has the facility to import all your existing settings and bookmarks from other browsers. FWIW here are the pages I have open: http://www.oddschecker.com/horse-racing/york/16:20/winner https://www.timeform.com/racing/ http://www.attheraces.com/article.aspx?hlid=547590&lid=nav+-+tips+and+analysis&raceid=&title=Hugh+Taylor&ref=Nav+-+Tips+and+Analysis&nav=tips&sub=&day= http://www.attheraces.com/article.aspx?hlid=253344&lid=nav+-+default+sub&raceid=&title=Speed+Ratings+-+Wednesday&ref=Nav+-+Default+Sub&nav=home&sub=Speed+Ratings&day= https://www.flatstats.co.uk/horse-racing-systems.php https://www.flatstats.co.uk/turf-sire- http://www.drawbias.com/|http://www.paddypower.com/bet?action=go_new_home http://sports.coral.co.uk/ http://sports.williamhill.com/bet/en-gb http://www.stanjames.com/UK/802/homepage http://www.betfred.com/# http://www.bet365.com/home/FlashGen4/WebConsoleApp.asp?cb=1058020279502511025 http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?board=11.0 http://mesgmy.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewMyMessages&_trksid=p2060353.m2034.l3912&CurrentPage=MyeBayMyMessages&ssPageName=STRK:ME:LNLK:None&FClassic=true#d1 https://twitter.com/?lang=en http://www.betdaqtips.com/2015/05/12/daqman-tues-derby-trials-verdict/ http://racecaller.com/horse-racing-forum/index.php Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? Post by: arbboy on May 20, 2015, 10:51:36 AM My daily standard working tabs in order left to right are blonde, oddschecker, betfair, racingpost , gbgb ( dog results page), racingpost greyhound TV stream (during the evening) another betfair tab for non dog stuff, espn, telegraph, bbc and a pop up dog commentary stream from stan James which isn't a tab. I don't think I should be struggling with speed with that minimal use on a beast of an Alienware laptop surely? The only other thing which is open is skype usually and an excel spreadsheet.

Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? Post by: tikay on May 20, 2015, 03:10:46 PM Chrome no longer supports Silverlight which is a PITA as Sky Go uses it. What is "Silverlight", & do I need it? I keep getting a message at the bottom of my screen (on some sites), "Silverlight is out of date" or somesuch. I never knew I had it in the first place. Should add, my Laptop is fearfully slow, it barely runs a You Tube Video without 10 minutes to buffer, & to close it down takes at least 8 minutes. It is a Company Issue HP "Elite Book". Not sure, but probably 5 or 6 years old. Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? Post by: DMorgan on May 20, 2015, 03:52:15 PM I've been using it for a couple of days on a laptop that is a couple of years old and a bit slow and it definitely improved the speed of Chrome.
As for the number of tabs you should be having open it really depends on your computer spec. Most laptops over a couple of years old I'd expect to struggle once you start getting towards 15, 20 tabs open at the same time. iPads and other Apple stuff it probably doesn't make a difference as they have a different processing structure to PCs. I guess theres no reason why anyone that isn't into the technical side would give a second thought to how many tabs they 'should' be using, but just to illustrate if you go to Start and search for Task Manager, you'll see in the Processes tab of that window that there will be a TON of instances of Google Chrome on the list, all using processing power. Reducing the number of tabs that you have open will almost certainly improve your laptops performance speed Tony Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? I only use Chrome for one site (Twitter, & only because it "saved" my Password, which I have forgotten, but I need it to log in via other browsers), so I'm going to stop using Chrome & see if that helps. Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? Post by: titaniumbean on May 21, 2015, 05:44:14 PM Chrome has some seriously awful memory leaks. Facebook specifically is one page that has had a horrible memory leak for awhile now but no one has bothered to fix it.
Haven't heard of Opera in years, used to use it back in early 2000 to have multiple tabs open and automate some tabbing stuff. Was brilliant back in the day. Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? Post by: vegaslover on May 21, 2015, 11:04:19 PM Perhaps it's a recent issue with chrome. I use it and noticed that it has been slower recently.
Can't believe sky recommend using internet explorer though, that is hideously slow. Title: Re: Which is the best Internet Browser? Can't believe sky recommend using internet explorer though, that is hideously slow. Noticed that mine has been terrible, too. Betfair seems to be the worst site, and I'm repeatedly offered the option to 'kill tab', and then reload. Been debating whether it might be worth going back to Firefox. Internet explorer couldn't be more insecure if they actually tried to make it so. one of the worst pieces of software to have ever existed (and it still fking exists and is default to some people!) This is pretty much exactly the same for me. However it seems to be worse on certain broadbands than others. At home on top grade BT broadband it doesnt seem a problem. I was at my missus house last few days and it was terrible on her slower broadband. Not entirely sure what the issue is but it is def slowing betfair down more than any other site for me.
