Title: Windows 10 Post by: Honeybadger on June 07, 2015, 02:53:34 AM Just noticed a little notification thing at bottom of my screen and when I click on it it is saying I can sign up for a free upgrade to Windows 10 when it is released. Is this something they are offering to everyone? Should I take up the option? I currently have Windows 8 (or is it 8.1? I don't know tbh... I bought it a few months ago so presumably it is up to date) and it seems fine for me. Don't especially want to be one of the first to have the new operating system since I gather there are always a ton of bugs etc in the first few months. But on the other hand, I do not want to 'miss out' on getting it for free and then have to pay for it later on.
Advice from those less technically challenged than me please... Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: Marky147 on June 07, 2015, 03:28:47 AM I noticed the same little icon pop up on mine earlier this week, but was a bit sceptical at first.
I checked it out, and it's all legit. I had a look at the Windows 10 reviews on youtube, and it looks like a combination of 7/8, which has to be much better than 8 alone :D It says when you sign up, that you have the option to download when it's available, or just continue as you are. I've just accepted, and will probably wait until it's been about a bit, and they've hopefully ironed out any kinks :) Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: Jon MW on June 07, 2015, 02:32:08 PM They're offering the free upgrade for a year, I'm probably going to wait a couple of months for any patches to come out then upgrade.
I don't think it's worth the risk of getting straight away in case one of the initial bugs is particularly troublesome. Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: Ironside on June 07, 2015, 02:59:09 PM I am hoping it's much more like win 7 than win 8 but with some of the good features from win 8 , going to upgrade and old laptop first then do the PCs if I like it
Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: bobAlike on June 07, 2015, 03:51:49 PM Does anyone know if it's free for life once the year is up or are they going down the yearly subscription route?
Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: titaniumbean on June 07, 2015, 04:04:24 PM if you want for a microsoft product to not have any bugs Stu you'll never use it. we are still running with pre millenial bugs on this pos OS ;tk;
Seems like a no brainer to sign up for 10. you know 8 was good when they have to distance themselves from it! rotflmfao Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: Jon MW on June 07, 2015, 04:16:10 PM Does anyone know if it's free for life once the year is up or are they going down the yearly subscription route? It's free for life, the reason they're doing it is because people have been so slow to convert to the new OS when they've launched previous ones. Most of it has been from people buying new computers, which leaves too many people using their 'old' versions. With a greater uptake of Windows 10 they'll be able to kill off 7 and 8 quicker and make more money by not having to worry so much about keeping them up to date and secure (as secure as they get anyway :) ) Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: titaniumbean on June 07, 2015, 08:19:46 PM I nearly spat my drink out at 'keep them up to date and secure'.
proper loled. Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: Marky147 on June 07, 2015, 08:41:48 PM I nearly spat my drink out at 'keep them up to date and secure'. proper loled. Have you watched 'Deep Web' yet, titty? out this year right? if so nope. Alex Winter was on Joe Rogan's podcast last month talking about it, and I think it's out this month. Seemed pretty interesting, and Winter's other doc 'Download' was a good watch. Who'd have thought Bill & Ted would be working on a documentary together :D Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: titaniumbean on June 07, 2015, 09:01:50 PM whoaaaaaaaaaa sounds totally excellent :D
will have to check it out. Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: Marky147 on June 07, 2015, 09:15:07 PM Ha, just looked on imdb, and it was shown last weekend in the US.

One additional reason that I am sort of loath to do so though is that I have this little add-on the Windows 8 that I bought called 'startisback' - it brings back the start button on bottom left of screen and makes Windows 8 work like the older and better Windows. I presume it will no longer work on Windows 10. But then again, maybe I should not even be using this startisback thing?

The start button is back on Windows 10, and it does look a lot more user friendly than the POS that is 8, which is on my spare laptop :D Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: Honeybadger on June 08, 2015, 11:55:16 PM Okay cool, I've registered for it now. Says it will be out near end of this month. Should I back up files etc before installing it? Just in case... or is it likely to just install over top of my current OS without losing anything?
Title: Re: Windows 10 Post by: Jon MW on June 09, 2015, 06:36:26 AM It is likely to just install over the top without losing anything and you should back everything up beforehand. There's no point in taking the risk :)

You have to disable automatic updates and change to the settings that allow you to view updates prior to installl, where you can untick the Windows 10 upgrade.
