I am pleased to announce this year's Blonde Royal Ascot Tipster Competition.

The rules are as follows:

1. Entry is open to everyone upon payment of a £25 or £10 entry fee to me. I will PM my bank details to everyone who has expressed even a remote interest (see post below). Payment must be received by me before 2pm on Tuesday 16th June. If you are interested, please indicate below or PM me. Each person may enter up to a maximum of two times. Each entry costs £25 or £10.

There will be two pools for this event. One costing £10 and one costing £15. It will not be possible to enter the £15 pool on its own. The same selections will be entered in both pools. The object for this is to try to encourage more people to take part.

2. The competition will be run over the 30 races from Tuesday 16th June to Saturday 20th June 2015.

3. Each entrant will pick one horse per race. The selection must either be for a £2 win or a £1 each-way bet. Winnings will be settled on the basis of Starting Prices.
If you fail to make a valid selection or select a non-runner it will be counted as a £2 win bet on the SP favourite (lowest racecard number if there are joint/co favourites).
I will take instructions for "random" selections (e.g. first horse alphabetically) for each race if you do not have the time/inclination to make your own selections but, in a rather dictatorial manner, I am not going to allow selections such as "pick the SP favourite for every race" or attempts to circumvent this rule.
If I do not receive your selections by the appointed time on any day I will make a random selection for you. Note that this will be truly random, i.e. not based on the horses prices, names or draws.

4. The place component of an each-way bet will be decided using the following criteria:
1/4 the odds for a place for each horse officially returned on the results for each race on www.gg.com
In the event of only one horse being show in the result on https://gg.com/racing/, all e/w tips will be converted to a "win only" bet.

5. I will be using www.gg.com for the purpose of deciding the result of each race.

6. Entries must be sent to me via PM by 2pm on the day of the races. I will then make everyone's selections available via the spreadsheet by 2:30pm that day.

7. The winner will be the person who makes most profit (or least loss) over the course of the festival.

8. My decision is final in all matters (until proven otherwise).

11-20 entrants
1st 75%
2nd 25%

21-30 entrants
1st  60%
2nd 30%
3rd 10%

The long & short of it is you need to work out my cunning system first.

Yes, this competition uses the "official" place rules; it doesn't take into account any "generous" terms that the bookies might offer.

That horse is showing 6/5 on what I assume is the US Tote on the screen in front of me.  Value it isn't.

6/5  is a bit short everywhere has them on 2-1 here

They said on Channel 4 yesterday that one of the foreign horses was 2/5 with the books in its home country, but massive odds against here :D

Fairly sure that was the Hong Kong horse.  Just search for videos of it racing in Hong Kong and you'll understand the price more.  Obv ran a shocker here.

It might be mine as I finished last in that.

The jockey club in Hong Kong is an amazing thing.  Guess all the sparkly new casinos in Macao have done some damage, but tax on betting on horses in Hong Kong used to account for 7% of GDP.  If you can wangle an invite from a member the buffer during a race meeting at happy valley is pretty special.  I think many of the most powerful hang around there for race meetings, like a weekly royal enclosure.  They have a sports and social club up the top of a hill that I have been to too.  They even have a country club in the new territories where the chosen ones can stay to get out of the City.  All very nice I am sure, though I haven't been inside.

I haven't actually backed many of my selections. Too often with these competitions, some right wotsit comes from nowhere (sometimes on the last day) with an absurd run of monster price winners and steals it. This time, I plan to be that wotsit.

If Mere is amenable - which I would have thought is highly improbable - we may persuade him to do something for The Open Golf.

This has, as always, been tremendous fun, & Mere really makes it tick along nicely, for all his obduracy.

I'm happy to do it if there is enough support.

have you thought of running a tipping comp for wimbledon i am sure the punters wouldnt mind adding on some rake to insure you get a drink for your hard work

as said last year by someone reserves would be good if it didnt cause problems

The Open starts 16th July.
I'm happy to run something along the same lines as The Masters competition if there is sufficient interest (and sufficient markets exist).
Alternatively, if anyone has any ideas for freshening the format up, let me know.

Happy to run anything if someone comes up with a reasonable format and there is interest.
However, I don't want to flood the market and dilute interest too much.

Count me in if you do.

Happy to go with the flow as to format etc.

These Threads are really good for blonde, in so many ways.

I fear you may struggle to get enough interest in Wimbledon.

Seriously, it is hard enough to hold on the last day with everyone punting outsiders.  I don't think it needs a change and it is going to increase admin.  And we have all copped for the unintended favourite at one time or another in the week. Think comp is fine as it is.

Can I just just get clarification of one thing.

Did Tal really score 0 (zero) points?

I seem to remember many years ago being offered by a very shrewd type, odds-against picking one horse in every race through a six-race card to not finish in the frame, so gawd knows what price he'd have given me to do it five times on the trot.

I tried something different this time. Suffice to say, the waste paper bin contains one soiled algorithm.

The case for having a "reserve" horse on the final day seems to divide opinion.
It's not a problem to administrate but it may over-complicate things for the casual entrant.

I understand that it can be frustrating to get the low price favourite when you are hoping for a long shot winner but I guess that it cuts both ways depending on where you sit in the table.

Therefore I intend to leave the rules unchanged for future competitions unless there is a significant wave of support.

I'm definitely in favour of keeping it as it is.

Apart from the result, that is.
