Title: This is why I will never get very far playing poker!
Post by: MIW245 on June 18, 2015, 10:07:44 PM
Firstly, I don't claim to be a master at poker by any stretch of the imagination! I play live at DTD a couple of times a month, and have only made a few cashes and even took a few tourneys down in my time, but that's about it!

However, as a £50 tourney is the most expensive game I've ever played, I've decided to make an effort on satelliting into the £300 deepstack. Just for the experience really....

This is the 4th hand of the tourney, and is a $120 sat with 10 deepstack seats guaranteed (played about 15 mins ago). I got to this tournament by winning tickets from $0.10, $5.50 & $27.50 tourneys beforehand, so had really 'built my way up' to this tourney.

As I say, 4th hand so no read on any players. Did i completely balls this up and dig my own grave? Did I play it correctly? What would you have done here?

Welcome to Blonde MIW.

Bad Beat stories don't go down too well here, but if you're actually looking for advice on the hand then folding pre is pretty much the way ahead in a satellite or indeed any deep stacked tournament where you are on the 4th hand.

Having called the 3bet remember, we don't have to win all the chips in a satellite, we just need to have some chips left when the game ends and everyone left gets a seat.
Not sure I like your opponent's play here much, but meh, it is what it is.

As played, not sure what you thought luckbeerlady held? I know they were 'behind' but there were a lot of hands that were better than yours that they would be in their range. Including a made flush.

Good luck in the next one.

Some great analysis here guys, sure a guy that's only posted three times on this forum really appreciates the tone of some of the above posts and the constructive comments akin to those that have been going up on pleno's diary recently.

Regarding the actual hand, I'd just fold pre most likely. I know we're in position but our hand doesn't actually flop that well and we're going to be dominated by a bunch of stuff that people are going to 3b out of the blinds. That said, I don't think calling is really that bad (we're pretty deep, we're ip, his raise isn't that big etc), just that if you're calling a hand like this you're probably calling too wide overall, and it's basically unnecessary to do this when there will definitely be easier decisions further on in the tournament. A lot of these satellites are just about taking low variance lines and playing simple abc poker, after all we don't actually have to end up with all the chips to win the tournament.

Flop's obviously going to be fine, turn is like wtf call, no idea what he's supposed to realistically have here. Unlucky that he got there, don't dislike the way you played the hand, just find a brick next time ;)

Also, if you haven't already, hop over to "The Best in the Business" on the diaries and blogs page. That's one of the best players in the world going on a bad run and struggling through it, kinda helps to know even the best in the world get pissed off with getting unlucky, they just work through it because they know it'll come good in the end.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the comments. I was a bit angry with he hand when i wrote this post. But i didn't mean it as a bad beat story! I genuinely wanted to know if I did something wrong with the view of improving. I suppose a fold pre would have been the best thing. As you say, 4th hand in, no need to get fancy. Its just hard when its sooooo deep!

At the same time, I put him on a flush draw 100%, I just suppose he thought I would snap fold.

As you say.... meh. It is what it is!

yep, unlucky.

Shit happens as the saying goes :P

r.e preflop, bit confused...are you in the BB closing the action or are you somewhere else? If you're in the BB closing the action then I think calling is absolutely fine.

If you're somewhere else then yeah you should probably fold

Hey MI

Weclome to PHA and Blonde.

I was going to post earlier but wasn't to sure about positions with the HH posted.

Others have covered the hand really well.

When he overbet jams the turn, i'm folding,  can't see any hand we beat. Obv i'm wrong!

Very unlucky on the river.

Yes, I'm on the button. Which is the only reason why I entered the hand. The more I think about it though, the more I think folding was by far the best option. Maybe a call later in the tournament with more reads and info on other players, but the fact is I knew nothing 4 hands in to call with J-10 off.....

I think you were perhaps a shade unlucky Mr MIW.

It was only a small mistake pre-flop, but these small mistakes get bigger sometimes down the streets, & the deeper this hand went, the tougher it was to get away. And it all came from a marginal decision pre-flop.

Hopefully, it won't impede your will to try & play a few more big events.
