Rooney

Linekar is so far ahead of the others it doesn't bear thinking about imo.

Then Charlton, then a wide gap, then the rest.

What about 'own goals'?  Joint top scorer in England history!

Never performed at a major championship though.

Neither has Rooney many would argue.

Havent seen enough to rate charlton or greaves.

Lineker far superior because of when he got his goals.

Shearer ahead of owen and rooney, aswell.

Think rooney has been a disappointment in the realisation of the talent he had.

44 goals in 57 games for Greaves.  Some strike rate that.

Sure him and charlton were great but to truly rate them youd probably have to be at least what 55?

Teams on surely on the whole stronger now aswell.

He was pretty prolific at club level too.  Argument should be who us as great as Greaves?

Greaves for me.

I was very close to putting Greaves first, Lineker 2nd and Sir Bobby 3rd.  Very hard to seperate them for different reasons.  Huge gulf to anyone else.  Not sure Owen and Rooney are auto top 5 either all time.  So many 'soft' goals in their totals.

Greaves and Charlton first

greaves goal per game was incredible

charlton scored a bucket load playing as attacking midfielder/support striker

Lineker a way behind. not the all rounder charlton was.

Rooney behind that

then Owen

i think, though i would have to go and check, that a higher percentage of rooney's games/goals are in qualifying against also rans as the international game has fragmented/new countries have come in post independence etc etc

Nat Lofthouse 30 in 33 as well.

i've seen and ready plenty about greaves/charlton to help me decide

any poll on here can't be expected to take into account lofthouse, mortensen and further back.

Greaves also got his goals with 0 pens as well.  Changing my mind.  Putting Jimmy at number 1.  Didn't realise Lineker had 4 pens for England.

Interesting analysis of the stats for both Charlton & Rooney in 4-4-2
http://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/wayne-rooney-vs-bobby-charlton-whos-got-best-england-scoring-record
Charlton scored more in friendlies...

Lineker would have equalled the 49 if he hadn't tried to be cute with 'that' penalty.

Ultimately it's hard to argue with Greaves' record
Then Charlton (who would have been beyond priceless in today's market)
Rooney tips it in front of Salt n Vinegar boy because of his contribution beyond the goals
Then Owen, although even I would put Shearer ahead of Owen, I'd put Channon and MacDonald ahead of Owen too. Oh, and Hurst obviously.

Greaves just ahead of Charlton for me.

I think Tom Finney might be one of the most under-rated English players, and Lineker was probably the best goal-hanger. Owen obviously the finest commentator.
