Title: Philosophy. Post by: RED-DOG on September 11, 2015, 09:11:29 AM I looked philosophy up to see how the dictionary defined it.
1 the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline. 2. a theory or attitude that acts as a guiding principle for behaviour. I dug a little deeper and discovered that philosopher's don't so much answer questions as ask them. The big philosophical questions seem to be, Who am I? Where did I come from? Where did everything else come from? Isn't life wonderful? What happens when I die? Does God exist? Where did he come from? I might be wrong, but I think I'm a philosopher. Title: Re: Philosophy. Title: Re: Philosophy. Post by: RED-DOG on September 12, 2015, 09:17:53 AM So is one, both or none of these statements fair and acceptable?
Something came from nothing. Something has always existed. Title: Re: Philosophy. Post by: Redsgirl on September 12, 2015, 01:16:41 PM So is one, both or none of these statements fair and acceptable? Something came from nothing. Something has always existed. I think this thread disproves the first question. Title: Re: Philosophy. If the Big Bang theory of the universe starting is true then both these statements are valid. Title: Re: Philosophy. Post by: RED-DOG on September 13, 2015, 11:21:12 PM So this philosopher bloke, I forget his name now, goes to Egypt and wonders how high the great pyramid of Giza is. The builder isn't around to ask so he comes up with a staggeringly simple way of measuring it.
I would never have though of it in a thousand years. Title: Re: Philosophy. Post by: RED-DOG on September 14, 2015, 04:17:11 PM He waits until his shadow is as long as he is tall, and then he measures the pyramid's shadow.
Isn't that brilliant? Title: Re: Philosophy. Post by: AndrewT on September 14, 2015, 06:27:03 PM He doesn't really need to wait, as the ratio of shadow:actual height will be the same for both him and the pyramid. so if his shadow is half as long as him, then the pyramid's shadow will also be half its height.

That's true. But then I probably wouldn't have understood it. |
