Title: ****The Official Documentaries Thread***
Post by: DaveShoelace on September 18, 2015, 07:13:43 PM
Do we have one of these yet?

Anyhoo, I'm really into them at the moment. I just watched this one:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Corporation_(film)

and recently liked this ones:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiro_Dreams_of_Sushi

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anvil!_The_Story_of_Anvil

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_of_Kong

What else is good?

Will have a muse.

You are speaking my (slightly conspiracy theory nutjob) language, I'd already bookmarked two of the Alex Winter ones, now I have to watch em.

They were all very good.

I'd say Citizenfour was the most interesting, but I was a CT in the Navy, so am probably a bit biased. I've already gotten hold of Laura Poitras' other work, after watching that one.

Just watched it. Found it mindblowing not for all the NSA stuff, but for the obvious personal sacrifice Snowden made.

Yeah, don't think I'd have been able to make such sacrifices in his spot.

Basically ended his life, as he knew it, and now has to live in exile.

Game theory, machinations of capitalism, illusions of freedom?  Yes please

Adam curtis, the trap.

His freedom of nightmares series was similarly thought provoking

I keep reading this thread title as 'The Official Documents Thread'

So just to satisfy my own stupidity here's a document on 'Cryptographic Security Characteristics of 802.11 Wireless LAN Access Systems'. I'm sure you'll all agree that it's riveting.

Looking forward to the Official Porn Thread.

Surely EvilPie and/or Amatay have started one already?

Watched this last night:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitalism:_A_Love_Story

I've always thought the USA was both the greatest and the worst place in the world, this doc has swung me more towards it being a terrible place to live if you are not wealthy. Some truly horrifying examples of corporate greed and a great overview of the banking crisis (Although has to be said, quite a lot of cherry picking and straw manning from Michael Moore).

Also this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gashole

This one is a little bit more tin foil hat, but I still believe it. It's about how the oil companies have tried aggressively to prevent improvements to fuel consumption in cars and cars running on alternative fuel sources.

That's more mitigation than defence.

Did you not watch "The Golden Age of Trams" last night? Was well wicked.

Great thread idea, love a good documentary. Watched almost all of the ones on Netflix =/

A few suggestions

What Happened, Miss Simone? - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4284010/?ref_=nv_sr_2

All about the life of Nina Simone. I've always been a fan of her music but she really had a tumultuous life, well worth a watch

Searching For Sugar Man - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2125608/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Songwriter and performer that took South Africa by storm in the 70s but nobody knew what happened to him, won the Oscar and BAFTA for best documentary in 2013

Fed Up - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2381335/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Examines the role of the US food industry in keeping America eating, specifically the food industry and its enthusiasm for funding government backed fitness programmes. The film examines whether or not this is just an act of misdirection to keep governments talking about fitness and not huge amount of sugars in our food.

Posted it in the other thread for docs, but its so good I'll post it here as well.

Life In A Day. About 90 mins long, on Youtube. It's essentially a Youtube picture; snippets of the life of people on one day on planet earth in the 21st century edited together to make a documentary. Unique, humbling, funny, sad, the works.

Enjoy!

Last night I watched  Imagine... The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson. Follows the story of how Wilko dealt with his cancer. Some great archive footage too. Very moving at times. Decided to start it at 11.30 and see if it was any good, got to bed at 1am.

I had it in the planner but I believe it's still there for viewing if you search. Series 28 episode 5.
