Planning a 5 day holiday to Iceland.

Anyone been, any recommendations etc? Stay in one place and hire a car? Or can you do most of the good stuff without jaunting around the country?

Going in mid November.

There's a Bobby Fischer museum there. He developed an affinity for the place after they let him play his world championship match against Spassky there (he was no longer welcome in the USA).

Yeah been a couple of times, it was a few years back though.

November is an interesting time because you might only get something like 5 hours daylight, I remember there being very long twilights.

We mostly just did stuff on organised day trips from Reykjavik, but a car couldt be a good option. Really nice scenery out there with a mix of rugged landscapes, glaciers, waterfalls and newish volcanic rock areas.

One really good thing we did was go up onto one of the glaciers on one of those huge fuck off monster 4x4 trucks, then and went snowmobiling up there. Also went on a helicopter flight to reach some scenes areas not accessible by road, the pilot was a stunt pilot that's been in loads of films and he gave us a bit of a demo, that was really cool.

Plenty of rank food they dare you to eat also, rotted shark meat being the worst  ;tracet;

I remember it being ridiculously expensive, most expensive place I've ever been, might have changed now though with the crash of their banks etc, no idea.

I went last year for a few days and loved it. I stayed in Reykjavik hiring a car from the airport (they are about 25 miles apart) which worked well. The golden circle which you can do as a day trip from Reykjavik is THE thing to do, which is various tourist spots in a loop mainly geological sites, volcanic activity, waterfalls etc. Also the blue lagoon is worth doing which is basically a massive swimming pool which is geothermical heated.

I went in May so it never really got properly dark at that time of year whereas November you are going to get the opposite effect. It wasn't as expensive as I imagined, slightly more expensive than the uk but not much in it, I think the financial meltdown there really had an effect. Cash is almost never used there though obviously accepted most places, everyone uses cards almost everywhere can't think of somewhere that didn't take a card.

Since the event is in the future, either bring or take is fine, I think. Especially when there's an omitted objective pronoun (with you).

I went for 5 Days with BMW in February a few years ago

We Stayed at the Hotel Borg. Very Central Close to nice Bars and eating places.

We were looked after by a company called http://mountaineers.is/

They collected us from the Airport in Monster Trucks.

Took us straight to the Blue Lagoon did all the tourist things and was very well looked after

Mate they would advise what to do.

A Helicopter ride is cool flying across frozen Lakes about 6ft high.
We used the company that filmed James Bond Die Another Day

If you chose these 2 you won't go far wrong.

Well, the event is in the future, but the verb isn't.  

I agree with Andrew and Red: take a six pack of Carling to your mate's to watch the footy by all means but, if you're coming to one of my dinner parties, you'd better bring a bottle.

I think that's a question of emphasis Tal, but there's noway I'm bringing a Geordie to an English language fight with you :p

The OED uses come in the relevant definition of bring:

1.1 Cause (someone or something) to come to a place

We could argue about exceptions for our own giddy entertainment all day. And I don't just mean that figuratively. I'm very careful about my modal verb selection :)

The wife and I went in April, We stayed at Hotel Fron in Reykjavik, it was a fairly budget hotel but had everything that we needed, mainly just slept and spent all day on different trips/tours.

As above I would definitely recommend the Golden Circle Tour, it was a full day spent visiting different sites, to include the shooting Geisers.

The Blue Lagoon was our best day, we spent all day there and had a very nice meal in the Lagoon Restaurant.

The island is very remote and miles and miles of rocks and nothing... unless you have something in mind that you would like to drive to see, the tour operators are very local and offer quite a good level or service.

All the bars have happy hours, you can download an app that tells you which bar has its happy hour and when... Food and drink was quite expensive, but with you living in London now, i dont think it will be that much different.

We also went on a Northern Lights tour, we were lucky enough to see them...

The hot water smells like rotten eggs... all the hot water is heated from within the earths crust and has a potent smell to it...
