Title: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: rivered on February 01, 2006, 10:14:13 AM OK, bit of fun this, but I've been asked by a colleague to enter a competition with his football buddies... the format is great!!... you lot might've already come across this but it's new to me, and i need help cos i'm useless at choosing winners... here's the deal...
everyone sticks in a tenner. you then have to pick on premiership team to win out of all the prem teams playing in games this sat/sun/mon. If you win you're thru to the next round (week) - everyone through has to pick a new team the following week, BUT you can't pick the team you had the week before... this keeps going until there's one winner.... In the past they've told me it's gone on for up to 8 weeks. Last weekend was the first week in the round, and a girl picked birmingham... all the guys picked chelsea and all the other big guns... sure enough they all drew or lost and the girl won £330 straight off. So what i want to know is who you would pick this week, bearing in mind you can never pick em again if they win and you get through. once you're out, you're out - you have to wait until someone wins before everything resets again... Great idea eh?!... pleeeeze help... here are the games... Saturday Birmingham - Arsenal Bolton - Wigan Everton - Man C Man U - Fulham Middlesbrough - Aston V Newcastle - Portsmouth West Brom - Blackburn West Ham - Sunderland Sunday Chelsea - Liverpool Tottenham - Charlton Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Graham C on February 01, 2006, 11:34:10 AM Sounds a good idea :)
Id go for either of Man U to beat fulham West Ham to beat Sunderland Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: yt on February 01, 2006, 11:43:18 AM Man u.
good idea this though i will try it with my work mates. Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: henrik777 on February 01, 2006, 11:46:37 AM West Ham or Newcastle.
Sandy Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: mystery721 on February 01, 2006, 03:31:05 PM west ham is your best mate, people are gonna be picking the big guns early on to get through a few rounds, but later on they cant pick them, take west ham this week and keep the big guns for later on
Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: rivered on February 01, 2006, 04:22:22 PM thx guys, West Ham (as much as i hate them) was the most popular response, so i've gone with them....

Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: jammer on February 05, 2006, 04:03:23 AM Through examination of game-theoretic analysis and regression-based statistics I have come up with a fool proof strategy:
pick whichever team is playing sunderland that week. Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Indestructable on February 05, 2006, 11:35:52 AM Or Boro (unless they are playing Sunderland).
:cheers: Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: SKIPPYSKIP on February 05, 2006, 11:42:33 AM West Ham ;tightend; ;tightend; ;tightend; ;tightend; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause;
Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: rivered on February 08, 2006, 02:07:14 PM THanks to you all for the help... west ham won and I'm through to the next round!! :)up
now for this weekend's games... who do ya reckon will win?!?! Here are the picks.... I'm tempted to go Spurs, although I could use up my Chelsea pick, as this should be a dead cert.... but wouldn't mind saving them for a rainier day... Saturday, 11 February 2006 Arsenal v Bolton, 15:00 Aston Villa v Newcastle, 15:00 Everton v Blackburn, 15:00 Fulham v West Brom, 15:00 Middlesbrough v Chelsea, 15:00 Portsmouth v Man Utd, 17:15 Wigan v Liverpool, 12:45 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunday, 12 February 2006 Man City v Charlton, 16:00 Sunderland v Tottenham, 13:30 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, 13 February 2006 West Ham v Birmingham, 20:00 Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Graham C on February 08, 2006, 02:10:00 PM West Ham again if you can have them, if not I'd go for Man City. I think spurs will draw this week.
Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: rivered on February 08, 2006, 02:14:05 PM nah, not allowed to pick the same team again... that's west ham used up for me now... so that's one vote for man city... keep em coming 8)
Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Jackkat on February 08, 2006, 03:58:04 PM Tottenham for me Sunderland are probably in the top 3 worst prem/Division 1 team ever
I think I'd even back the mighty Blackpool v Sundeland :) Good luck anyway Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Pombo on February 08, 2006, 04:51:28 PM I'd probably plump for either of the Sunday games and go for Citeh (only home team I'd pick) or Spurs......can't see Sunderland winning again....ever.
Maybe Manyoo....might be a waste using them early on though. Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Graham C on February 08, 2006, 05:54:55 PM Arsenal will beat Bolton this weekend too.
City would still be my main choice though Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: rivered on March 02, 2006, 03:53:23 PM I'm still in this!! now it's getting tough - pick one winner from any of the following fixtures - what you think?
Aston Villa v Portsmouth, 15:00 Fulham v Arsenal, 15:00 Liverpool v Charlton, 17:15 Middlesbrough v Birmingham, 15:00 Newcastle v Bolton, 15:00 Man City v Sunderland, 13:30 Tottenham v Blackburn, 16:00 Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Colchester Kev on March 02, 2006, 04:50:35 PM get in quick and pick Man City before someone else does.
Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Pombo on March 03, 2006, 08:39:36 AM Who have you picked so far?....or are they all available for selection.
I agree with Kev....got to be City from those choices. I'd love to say Fulham....they've got a great home record....but me being a Spurs fan sways me slightly. Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: rivered on March 03, 2006, 09:33:53 AM OK it's on city - i've picked WH, Man U and Chelsea the last three weeks and they've all won, so they're the only teams I couldn't pick... there's only 8 of us left now, with £400+ in the kitty... let's hope they all pick a looooooser! I almost went with liverpool, but man city should be a banker.
Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Graham C on March 03, 2006, 10:13:21 AM should be ;)
Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: GlasgowBandit on March 03, 2006, 10:23:14 AM Personally I'd have gone for Villa this weekend.
See when you say you can't pick the same team again does that mean "never" or just not the following week. A few seasons back a groupd 6 of us had something like this going for a coupon all we used to to do was club in a £10 each and but on a coupon everybody got to pick one team. At the end of the season we had just over 2k profit each and that included was really quite good. Cracking atmosphere though when the same guy picked loosing team 5 out of 6 weeks and the rest of us had winners. He was a greedy bugger and kept taking teams on to beat Celtic, Arsenal and Rangers! He followed the line of thought that one week it would come up and the prize would be much better as you where getting min odds of 5/1 needless to say we ended up booting him out the syndicate! Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Pombo on March 03, 2006, 12:58:38 PM You can only pick a club once for the entirety of the game.
I can see Villa being a good call. They're so inconsistent though that you never know what they're going to do! Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: rivered on March 03, 2006, 01:20:50 PM well.... there are 10 people left in the game.... 5 have gone man city, 4 liverpool..... and 1 villa!!
I'll be back to ask for help next week no doubt... have you seen the games?!?!... maybe wigan away?... but surely sunderland have to win at some point?! maybe charlton at home?! oh dear.... Birmingham v West Brom, 12:00 Blackburn v Aston Villa, 17:15 Bolton v West Ham, 15:00 Chelsea v Tottenham, 12:45 Everton v Fulham, 15:00 Portsmouth v Man City, 15:00 Sunderland v Wigan, 15:00 Arsenal v Liverpool, 16:00 Charlton v Middlesbrough, 15:00 Man Utd v Newcastle, 13:30 Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Graham C on March 03, 2006, 03:48:51 PM I think Sunderland will win again soon too. I'm not so confident against Man City but I think they'll get a draw.
I'd have gone for Liverpool, especially at home Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Nem on March 03, 2006, 04:07:10 PM Wigan, Everton, Blackburn and Chelsea >:( >:( >:(
Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Pombo on March 03, 2006, 04:31:50 PM Next week I'd look at Everton or Blackburn......Fulham are poor away and Blackburn are on a good run at home.
Gotta get through this week first though eh ;) Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Colchester Kev on March 05, 2006, 07:41:16 PM Nice touch with man City ... and with liverpool drawing 4 are out of the game ..... roll on next week :)
Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Pombo on March 06, 2006, 11:39:26 AM Down to 6....good going rivered.
I like Everton for next week..........or going on the fortunate win my beloved Spurs took yesterday after a thorough mauling, Blackburn are worth a look. Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: Colchester Kev on March 06, 2006, 05:03:02 PM Mick Mcarthy has just been sacked ... sunderland may do the usual trick and win their naxt game ... could be worth thinking about :) but to be honest i would go for Everton.

Now the dilemea - I'm on holiday for two weeks from saturday.. that means i need to choose the next two weeks after this sat's games as well!! - I'm thinking arsenal followed by liverpool... use up the big guns then worry about things if i'm still in. Whatcha think?!?! Title: Re: Football rollercoaster - help pleeeeeeease! Post by: rivered on March 15, 2006, 02:36:17 PM Oh and thx for the interest Kev! I thought I was annoying everyone asking for all these tips.. usually you're meant to post tips for other people not ask for them!! - any thx everyone for help... I'll be sure to get you all a beer at the next blond bash which doesn't conflict with my holidays (and which is hopefully gonna be held in london?!?!).

I reckon Bolton are a decent bet this weekend, but Sunderland are due a result soon. If I where to stick my neck on the line I would say Spurs away is a good bet. The only real options for me were wigan vs birm or spurs vs man city. i went with wigan and the rest is history. Roll on next season
