Title: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: Sark79 on February 01, 2006, 10:16:35 AM I don't know about anyone else, but when I play online, I always say the same strange things to myself after winning or losing a hand.
After winning I usually jump up from my seat and shout " get in there....thats what we want to see". I have no idea what this actually means, but it is something I normally do. I did shout once a few months ago after a STT win " Thats it baby.....give me some more".It was about 3:30am on a weekday when everyone else was asleep. But I had to stop this one after my nextdoor neighbout looked at my strangely the following day. She was probably thinking to herself " that guy must have had a good time last night". :D Or I just pump my fist and shout "COME ON" like Leyton Hewitt does after he wins a point. But after losing I shout " what an idiot....absolute fool" along with pacing about the room while trying to remain calm enough not to throw something. Does anyone else shout anything at theirselves or are you all calm while playing? Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: lazaroonie on February 01, 2006, 12:48:27 PM I am probably the least emotional person when gambling/playing poker. I laugh at all the people standing in the bookies screaming at the TV, or the youngsters slamming the table in a £5 rebuy when their flush hits. If you look silly when you are winning, how silly will you look when you lose.
the only emotion I recall showing was when playing in a satellite on bluesq last year for I think a seat at the £1000 Luton main event. On the bubble, I got AK on the button and was outdrawn by the BB holding A2, leaving me with about 40 chips and screaming at the screen uncontrollably. obviously it still hurts. But dignity is the key these days, Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: thetank on February 01, 2006, 01:04:44 PM I always strive to be calm when playing live.
The first time I played in a casino, I was involved in a pot limit omaha cash game. I had just over £100 on me. Most of it was on the table, the remainder was left in my pocket for my taxi-home. I was all-in with middle set against top set. On the river, the only card that would help me was a 4 to make me a straight and win me a £250 pot. I was very excited when the 4 landed and jumped from my chair crying "woohooo" The guy with the bigger set informed me that my conduct was somewhat unbecoming that of a gentleman. I thought about this a fair bit. Every time a cards helps you it crushes someone elses hopes. Out of consideration I try to keep all woo-hooing to an absolute minimum. When I get knocked out of a tournament, I don't want the player who did so to run around the room, jumping up and down whilst caterwoooling. Following the 'do as you like to be done by' logic I rarely openly celebrate when I win a pot If I've just secured 1st place in a tournament I make an extra effort to try to keep cool. It's not all about consideration for other players. Another good reason to keep your keishter on an even keel is to condition you, over time, to become less and less excited when good cards fall. This should help you not broadcast your hand to the table while you still wish to conceal it's strength. Recently, (in the last year) I've added this to my online game aswell. Emotionally detaching myself from results as much as I can IMO improves my play. It also stops the neighbours complaining :D Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: Graham C on February 01, 2006, 01:07:04 PM I don't really say a lot - perhaps a YESSSSSS or a STUPID STUPID STUPID whilst hitting my forehead
but that's it Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: Sark79 on February 01, 2006, 01:24:55 PM Yea, I think I will have to listen to my whales CD some more and practice breathing techniques :D
But, I think at the beginning of a players playing life, it is only natural to get excited. I am one of those cursed people who looks for a competative situation in everything. When I hit thirty I will probably look fifthteen years older due to all the stress :D Good point Tank, I didn't consider the other players. However this dosen't really apply to me at this stage as I only play online. I would never rub defeat in another players face. Even when I get beaten online I still congradulate the other guy and when I win I usually don't say a word. Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: Newmanseye on February 01, 2006, 01:51:39 PM I have been known on occassion to shout, "get it up yeh!!! " when I win a big pot with a cheeky out draw.
I also find it hard to refrain from typing " MUG, THIS IS MY POT " in the chat box the other is "getifuyabasa", "furfurksake" when some jammy bugger goes runner runner on me. Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: ruthless1 on February 01, 2006, 02:04:55 PM My partner makes me laugh, when hes in a big pot and thinks hes won it, all you here is
"GET IN THERE" then 1 second later "NA , HOW DID HE WIN THAT" It always makes me laugh Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: Bongo on February 01, 2006, 02:19:10 PM I think the funniest happened early in my poker playing days in a cash game on laddies - in the days when cards were on there backs when all in.
Anyway I was involved in a rather large pot for me back then holding something like AQ v KQ on a AKx board I'm concentrating hard on his cards and waiting for the turn and river and hoping i don't get outdrawn and my dad is watching too. turn is a blank. River is a Q giving my dreaded foe two pair. I'm gutted and start cursing my luck "LUCKY DOG! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?!?", seemingly much to my dad's as he is laughing at me. "it's not funny! I've just lost a big pot!" "You've got 2 pairs aswell - you both had the queen you daft bugger" I look at the screen to see the chips heading in my direction :D Nowadays I don't really show much emotion either way - sometimes I share my amusement with my dad when I win a huge pot in odd circumstances. As tank says in live play I think the most important thing to consider is the person who has just lost if it's a big pot they're usually gutted. Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: ACE2M on February 01, 2006, 03:13:47 PM I confess to a tut if i get badly outdrawn live but i never celebrate a win, unless it's a home game then it's fair game for full on taunting of my friends.
I am a very quiet person and the girlfriend complains that i talk more to the other players online who can't hear me than to her. I am particularly fond of 'come on dickhead give me my money' if they are dwelling up a call against my nut hand. Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: Sark79 on February 01, 2006, 03:21:24 PM lol...I have said something similar to ACE2M while playing.
I am also very quiet, I think thats why I like online poker so much You are able to express yourself in a deranged way where you won't offend anyone. In a live game, I would probably sit there and not say a word all night. But dignity is the key these days, Same with me - I'm a student of the "Phil Ivey school of showing emotion when winning and losing a pot" both live and online. In the past i used to type in things like "how can you call with that" etc etc. but now more often than not if i do type anything its usually "lol" unless someone actually outdraws me to knock me out and says either "sorry" or "gg" then i usually reply "no your not" or "good in what way?"..... Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: Poppet7 on February 01, 2006, 07:48:32 PM I usually shout the card I need at the screen.. so I'm like KING KING KING KING KING! Leon will usually watch me play and he'll be behind me saying wooooooooo hoooooooooooo!! I've been known to say the occasional "Oh Yes!" though ;)
I'll sometimes have a conversation with myself: Is he gonna call? Nah he won't Oh he has, what's he got? Hmmm No I think I'll fold now If I lose I don't go OTT, just F*** sake or Grrrrrrr! Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: MrMoves on February 01, 2006, 08:05:02 PM I used to use the chatbox a lot, mostly to wind up the other players. I rarely do so now, apart from last night...
I held Ad Qc The flop was Qh 7h 9h. My flop bet was called. Turn was 5d Half pot bet was raised (doubled). I moved all-in (I know this guy, from Turkey, he's not very bright and we've had lots of run-ins before. He's holding the nuts or nothing). It was brown underwear time when he called. Showing 9d 8c. No help on the river for my friend, a reasonable $1,550 pot, yum! I can get it quietly like everyone else, however, on my last encounter with this guy he took pleasure in dishing out a rub down. If wonder if my comment of "The button you're looking for starts with 'F'" helped him tilt a little harder? I don't say much to myself. The odd curse or yelp is often heard, depending on pot outcomes :D Title: Re: What we say to ourselves during a game Post by: Tonji on February 01, 2006, 10:03:26 PM My only form of exercise is a victory circuit of the room after a win at a SnG, high five with the dog, followed by a celabratory cup of tea to reflect in the glory. This is not a regular occurance. Lol
