The number of 80 year olds and above is expected to double over that timeframe (lifestyle, advances in medicine etc) What implications do these projections have for the economy, the social fabric of the UK etc? pensions? housing? other issues? Much more immigration will be needed to do health and social care jobs but will probably be blocked by the parties voted for by the elder generations. Ironic really. The above is a big concern of mine, however, I have also been seeing evidence of the opposite too. Populations are decreasing in a lot of places (Japan in particular) and there are also a lot of people who think jobs will not exist in 50-100 years. The population of Ireland was 8 million in 1841, but it dropped due to the Irish famine and later emigration. The population of the Republic of Ireland hit bottom at 2.8 million in the 1961 census, but it then rose and in 2011 it was 4.58 million.
