Title: St Andrews Day - are you celebrating it? Post by: tikay on November 30, 2015, 10:39:25 AM google informs me that today is St Andrews Day.
I always assumed it belonged exclusively to Scotland, but no, apparently St Andrew is also the patron saint of...... Cyprus Greece Poland Romania Russia Ukraine Saint Andrews, Barbados It's also apparently celebrated by none other than the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Guess you knew that. In Scotland, if Wiki is correct, it's a Bank Holiday, though note the Banks are not required to close, which seems a bit odd. .... Although it is a bank holiday, banks are not required to close and employers are not required to give their employees the day off as a holiday. I always assumed that Bank Holidays were a "National day off", but I suppose we live in a 24/7 world nowadays, so Supermarkets still open, it's usually a big day of sport, & the internet, as we know, is like The Windmill Theatre, it never closes. As far as I can see, there are no major football matches in Scotland today. Title: Re: St Andrews Day - are you celebrating it? Post by: doubleup on November 30, 2015, 10:54:48 AM It was never traditionally a holiday and I don't think it is much of one since it was touted as one in 2007. Don't even think that local government closes and they love a holiday.

Another day. Wiiiiiii Title: Re: St Andrews Day - are you celebrating it? Post by: Geo the Sarge on November 30, 2015, 07:40:30 PM It has never been an official holiday as far as I know. It is always celebrated within Scottish Infantry units (my old Regiments badge had St Andrew on the cross as the centre,) I don't know anyone outside of my military circle who celebrates St Andrews day
Geo Title: Re: St Andrews Day - are you celebrating it? Post by: bobAlike on November 30, 2015, 09:00:15 PM It is a very big thing in Cyprus and Greece, I couldn't tell you if its a holiday though. The majority of Greeks/Cypriots named Andrew, after St. Andrew, get inundated with messages 'να ζήσης' pronounced 'Na Zisis' which means 'May you live'. Which probably doesn't make much sense to non Greeks but it basically celebrates your life.
