Title: The age of information is denying football fans the joy of the unknown Post by: TightEnd on December 07, 2015, 03:08:16 PM "These days we tend to know all about new signings long before their debuts. That information is great, but it has taken away the excitement we felt when we turned up to a ground, watched them play and were surprised by everything"

Or - "Pfffft, I bought him in Football Manager and he was shit". Remember World Cups when we were kids - most non-European players were complete mysteries. The one that always stuck in my mind was Josimar in 1986 - made his debut in the World Cup and scored two great goals from full back. Nowadays someone like that would already be playing in Europe or even if he wasn't, Tim Vickery would have told us all about him. He was a sub for his first match, and just jogging up and down the touchline there was a ripple of excitement from the crowd. He guy was a perfect physical specimen, about 6ft 6, and built like the proverbial brick shithouse. Unfortunately after 5 minutes on the field, most of the excitement had died down as a brick shithouse would show a much better first touch. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_White_%28footballer%29 Title: Re: The age of information is denying football fans the joy of the unknown Post by: KarmaDope on December 07, 2015, 08:20:04 PM Slightly off topic but mini rant here.
Why tell us what number everyone is in the Cup Draw? What happened to the fun of the surprise?! Why tell us what number everyone is in the Cup Draw? What happened to the fun of the surprise?! You could see the numbers through the Perspex or whatever it was too. I defintely prefer something you can't see through. Sure we've had numbers and names together before. Title: Re: The age of information is denying football fans the joy of the unknown Post by: Doobs on December 07, 2015, 08:41:27 PM I think this is the same with a lot of things these days. You find yourself puzzled about something and 2 seconds later you have googled it.
When I was younger, the relationship of the two members of White Stripes was very confusing. I had read they were married, brother and sister, or just 2 people with the same name. I heard a song the other day, looked it up, found out they were married and he had taken her surname. It was all very interesting, but afterwards I was thinking not knowing might have been better. That probably remains true after finding out the whole brother/sister thing was just a publicity stunt. It must be so tough to be a mystery musician these days. KLF are no longer mysterious anti heroes, but the ex manager of Julisn Cope who stiffed him for some money. Bet I could even find out what Daft Punk looked like if I tried. Must resist. Don't see the point in it...surely the fun about it is "ooohhhh, is this my team"...then when it turns out to be Man Utd at home, "fuck fuck fuck not us, not us, not us, (THIRTY-FOUR *wait for a second* Northampton Town), oh bollocks!" |
