Title: RIP Suit & Tie?
Post by: tikay on December 16, 2015, 12:16:20 PM

I had an office job for maybe 38 of my 40 years in a proper job.

Even though I was often on mucky building sites & dirty portakabins, I wore a suit, white shirt & tie, & black shiny shoes every single day - no exceptions.

I suddenly became aware of late that most don't these days.

There is a Distribution List Next Door, every time there is a new starter, a little potted Bio & photo is circulated. Never seen a suit & tie in the photo yet.

Even the suits don't wear suits. The CEO of SB&G is a chap named Richard Flint, very smart guy (intellectually) with good solid traditional values, but he wears jeans & a jumper most days, even when doing Video presentations which we get regularly.

I occasionally see Jeremy Darroch, who is the CEO of Sky, one of the biggest comms companies in Europe, he must earn zillions. (Sky employ 30,000 staff). He is generally in "smart casual".

Even Michael O'Leary is rarely seen in a suit & tie.

Do you wear a suit & tie to work?

Away from work, how often do you don a suit & tie?

I mean, if nobody wears a suit & tie to the office, which appals me, what the hell do they wear on "dress down Fridays"?

It's probably our industry Tikay. I work with the same guys as you, and it became obvious to us here wary on that if we turned up to meetings with partners in a suit we'd be over dressed.

Still put a shirt on if I'm meeting someone from the gambling commission, and I still drag the suit out for the trade show, but every day is dress down in the office :)

Would actually quite like to wear a suit, but I'd be the only one.

Where I work now was a suit and tie environment for the first 7 years I worked here.
I have one team never who never complied - introduced dress down Friday and he bloody wore a shirt and tie every Friday.
Within a year of the introduction of dress down Friday, standard dress has regressed to Collar and shoes.
I don't like it.  Not sure the suit sellers of Norwich do either.

Pre 2001 i was working for a big 5 Chartered Accountancy firm.  Obvious full works of Thomas Pink Shirt, Tie, Pin Stripe suit, shiny brogues and braces (optional but usually done on a Friday for lolz) every day without fail whether client facing or not.  Left for betting industry in 2001 and never wore a suit or even shirt and tie once in 6 years at various roles for various firms all the way up to head of trading.  Standard work uniform now is hoodie and tracksuit.  Even mum has caught on and doesn't buy me work shirts for xmas anymore but a tracksuit!

I sometimes miss 'dressing up' for work like the old days even though it cost a fortune every year to kit yourself out.

It is actually written into my job contract that I wear a shirt and tie and a suit jacket outside of the classroom . I don't begrudge it although its not always practical.

What I do begrudge is my female colleagues not being held to the same standards. They often look far less professional, particularly in Summer where they are often wearing vests and skirts yet us fellas are still wearing our suits and ties. I've seen women wearing jeans, boots, leggings etc.

Surely one rule for all.

When I lived with my old house mate, as we are both poker players, we had dress up Fridays. Full suits, tuxedos sometimes etc. But for tradition I can't imagine why anyone would want to wear a suit if they didn't have to. Prob best off productivity wise to be as comfy as possible?

If you're not comfortable in a suit - you're wearing the wrong suit.

Its all about the loungewear these days. Onesies had their day in the sun, this year its all about the snuggle top

It is nice to smarten up for a change though, I always wear a suit to the races.

I used to have a Paul Smith suit that was so comfortable it felt like you weren't wearing any clothes - that could be a bit disconcerting at times.

My current job is the first office job I've had where I don't wear a suit - which makes me sad, but it would be a bit incongruous to do so when the Managing Director doesn't.

My impression is more and more places are getting rid of the necessity of wearing them but any commuter train into London I've been on has shown that any idea of the 'death of the suit' is about as premature as the 'death of the book' was when kindle came out.

Global IT consultancy. Maybe 1% wear a tie, 2% a jacket. Everyone else is chinos/jeans/casual shirts. I'm usually one of the 1% but frequently ditch the tie now.

A current client is a global law firm and they have dress down Fridays - and dress down summers. The whole of July and August are casual as long as they're not meeting a client.

Back in the 90s I worked for a small consultancy who landed a division of Nike as a client. Our boss was old school, we had to be suited and booted with tie every day. Eventually Nike told our MD that we *had* to turn up in casuals - not their style to have suits walking around.

Shirt and tie every work day....a suit if I'm meeting the Home Office  :)

It's important to present a professional image when running a language school for foreign students.

Last time I wore shirt & trousers for work was when I was in the mob :D

Don't mind a suit, but never wear them anymore, and not even sure where mine are.

When working, always wear a shirt and suit except Friday.  Most don't do jackets theses days in the offices I work in.  Long time since I have worn a tie, but there are a couple of guys I havd worked with recently who wear ties every day and they do look smarter.  Am sure it is a good career move to do so, but am too old to care enough about it.

This. We dont have dress down Friday but some days we have to come in wearing casual wear depending on what we're doing, Normal days its a suit plus no tie.

I do interim contracts and have worked at more than a dozen companies in various industries over the last few years. With one exception, every company was no-ties at all levels. In one company, there was a rebellion with the establishment of a 'Friday Tie Club'.

The only one with traditional dress was Southern Co-Op, where the men all wear suits and ties and the women, certainly at any management level, power-dress for work every day, not just in suits, but as if they are going to a dinner-dance.

Suit trousers, shirt and shoes for me most days. Sometimes wear a jacket sometimes just a jumper.

Depending on which clients I am meeting I will wear a tie and suit and most Fridays I dress down.

Shirt, Jeans & Shoes

We actually have to talk to new staff occasionally to ensure they don't wear a suit to meetings or exhibitions as we think it portrays the wrong image for our company!

Wearing a suit to the wrong meeting can make you look as ridiculous as wearing jeans to a different one.

You will very very rarely look out of place with smart office casual these days in most industries.

Personally I think it's great. For a whole number of reasons,.

The CEO of SB&G is a chap named Richard Flint, very smart guy (intellectually) with good solid traditional values, but he wears jeans & a jumper most days.

Knowing Richard pretty well this made me laugh a lot. I can't really explain why. I think it's the indignant tone :)

Tikay didn't mention, but he doesn't have an office either. He hot desks as do all the senior staff at SB&G. It's all part of the removal of Tayloristic structures in the workplace that is just awesome as far as I'm concerned.

Ha, pardon my inadvertent indulgent tone, I'm a little clumsy with wordy stuff.

It was a photo I was sent of something from that Office which prompted the thread.

I'm incurably old school, & it's all a bit of a culture shock to me when I go up there. I don't think anyone there has an office, they all hot desk. There are Meeting Rooms galore, & an electronic booking system, all very modern. The Meeting Rooms all have Gaming themed names - Venetian, Bellagio, Vegas etc.

The place just buzzes, it amazes me, everyone so young.

And they do "presentations" - by which I mean updates, "this is what our squad or tribe (squads, tribes, wtf?) are doing", these are called "Roulette Wheels". Why? Well there's a bloody great, maybe 10 metre diameter graphic of a roulette wheel on the floor.

The place amazes me, but I can't say I'm terribly comfy in it. Times are changing, way too quickly.

We used to have offices with doors, woe betide walking into an office without knocking, & waiting for "come in".......

Ha, that too.

JNK had a "knock first" Office thing, & by the tone of the grunted reply, I could tell what mood he was in. If he sounded especially grumpy - & he was prone to such things - I'd just walk away, stroll down the corridor innocently.

I turned up one day minus tie, don't quite recall why, think it was like 10pm on a Sunday night or whatever, & he promptly slung me out of his office. It seemed quite natural to me, & I felt ashamed.

When I retired, I swore I'd never wear a suit & tie again. Ever. But I can't bring myself not to when doing the Show, which must look perfectly ridic to young poker players.  All the Sky Sports Presenters wear a suit & tie, Botham, Jeff, even Carragher - a Liverpudlian of all things - wears a tie. So if its good enough for them, it'll do me.

I must admit I kind of miss wearing a suit from my sixth form days. I do enjoy the chance to dress up and I bought a really nice blazer and pair of brogues to wear to dinners as a way of compensating for the lack of suits in my life. I don't even get the chance for the races once a year atm.

Very smart indeed - looks like on one of those Royals, Prince William maybe.

Nice deal, too.
