Title: Who. How? Post by: tikay on December 18, 2015, 12:44:46 PM The world has changed beyond recognition since 1963, & that especially includes TV & Entertainment, & yet I learn today that Dr Who, first aired 52 years ago remains a raging success.
I gather a Christmas Day special is planned "this one is not serious" (& the others are?) & the Show is incredibly popular in Canada, Australia & New Zealand, & they have "cracked America" whatever that means. How can it have endured so long, through at least 2, maybe 3 generations of children, where every form of entertainment has changed beyond recognition. I mean, "Terry & June" would struggle to get decent ratings these days, right? Have any other similar TV Shows endured so long, & what is it about Dr Who that helped it survive & prosper? Surely grown ups don't watch it, do they? When it first aired in 1963, it was on Children's Hour - where it belonged - but that audience are now OAP's. Life's mysteries. Title: Re: Who. How? Post by: tikay on December 18, 2015, 12:50:46 PM I mean, really, how many of you have even seen a "Police Box"? They were useful 30 years before mobile phones were invented, but have long since disappeared. They were most useful at the time. If a beat Bobby - & there were no other types at the time - spotted some mischief, a murder, or a pavement job as Frankie Fraser described a smash & grab, the bobby would run to the Police box, dial an exchange, be put through to a Police Station, & could request reinforcements to be despatched on speedy bicycles. Post by: tikay on December 18, 2015, 12:55:43 PM I also learned from the Learned Chris, who is a font of info, that Star Wars returns soon, & people are getting excited by the prospect, with cinemas showing it back to back. Are you kidding me? Title: Re: Who. How? Post by: DMorgan on December 18, 2015, 01:12:56 PM Doctor Who is probably one of the best examples of broadcasters keeping a great concept up to date
Much like the millions that love Hamlet and the millions more who love Hamlet but don't know it, because the version that they've seen is animated and called The Lion King. The core concept of the story is similar (albeit minus a lot of the death) but is updated for a generation that enjoys animated entertainment. Title: Re: Who. How? Are you kidding me? Disney have got hold of it. I suspect there may be eye watering levels of sales figures for both box office and every kind of branded merchandised shit they are churning out. |
