Title: It is time.... Post by: TightEnd on January 12, 2016, 09:05:02 PM to review and update the football handball laws, so that it is a foul every time it touches the hand, intentional or not.
referees seem to be informally applying this rule (leicester, newcastle in the last foru days) to fans ire, so lets formalise it Dscuss. Title: Re: It is time.... Post by: Ironside on January 12, 2016, 09:09:03 PM too easy to kick it at a defender in the box with arm at side gain a pen
Title: Re: It is time.... Post by: Mark_Porter on January 12, 2016, 09:14:27 PM I don't know what the official rule is but my thought process would be
- Did the player touch the ball with his hand on purpose - if yes, it is a penalty - If he didn't touch it on purpose - was the players hand in a 'natural position' - if no then it is a penalty - If the players hand was in a natural position then no penalty unless it is denying a clear goal No idea if that is the rule but it makes sense to me. The opinion comes in when the referee makes the call of, was it on purpose (usually not) and was it a natural position (admittedly harder). Just keep educating the refs and make it clear to the public what the rule is. Just cannot have a penalty every time it touches a hand, would lead to a load of undeserved penalties. I seem to recall that you agreed with the penalty award at WHL. tonight's was worse i do think the application of the handball rule is far less consistent than it was Title: Re: It is time.... Post by: david3103 on January 12, 2016, 11:26:09 PM It was ever thus. Recency bias taking effect I think.
Nowadays we see everything from three or four angles and the TV picks it up to create issues they can discuss. The issue is more about refereeing consistency than changing the rule. Title: Re: It is time.... Post by: DropTheHammer on January 12, 2016, 11:57:43 PM I think that there is a lot to be said for giving the penno when it touches the hand AND disadvantages the attacking team by doing so eg Tottenham's recent penno, or even someone deliberately kicking it against a hand.
AFAICS, there is nothing in the rules to stop defenders of a free kick standing in a T position - that's "ball to hand"! The rules don't seem to mention the un-natural position but the common sense refereeing considers it. Title: Re: It is time.... Post by: bergeroo on January 13, 2016, 12:19:08 AM When I was 12 years old I gave away a penalty in Sunday Leagye and the referee told me there was no such thing as accidental handball. At the time I thought he was going rogue but maybe he was ahead of his time?
