Title: What I "worry" about at 2am after a bottle for wine. Post by: MereNovice on March 26, 2016, 03:09:46 AM In tennis, a player can challenge a line judge's call and the computerised hawkeye system is used to determine if the call is correct. If a line judge has called the ball out and then the call is shown to be incorrect the umpire then makes a decision as to whether the call impacted the “defending” player and either awards a point to the “attacker” or decides to replay the point. Many of these instances occur when a player is standing very close to the baseline as this seems to distract the line judge. A few players get stroppy when the point is awarded to the attacking player.
My question is this: Does the line judge's call really impact the receiving player in most cases? Let's assume a conservative 50mph speed for the shot (some men have been shown to hit ground strokes at over 110mph). 50 mph equates to roughly 25 yards per second. A human's reaction time to an auditory stimulus is assessed to be slower than 0.1s (for the purposes of athletic sprinting) and trials seem to show it as significantly slower. Therefore a player would need to be standing at least 2.5 yards behind the baseline to have been affected by a call (assuming that the line judge hasn't called before the ball bounced). I've not even considered the reaction times for visual stimuli (which would slow down the line judge's call further). Intuitively, I tend to think a line judge's call does impact a player so I presume that I've over-thought this one or made a mistake in my calculations. However, logically this would seem to indicate that players are rarely impacted by calls when they stand close to the base line. Help, please. This may look silly when I Title: Re: What I "worry" about at 2am after a bottle for wine. Post by: mondatoo on March 26, 2016, 03:13:05 AM Answer's at the bottom of the next bottle, glgl.
