Military claim they have taken over. This is going to be chaotic to say the least for global geopolitics

Is this completely out of the blue? I thought Erdoghan was fairly popular?

Edit: With the people at least, looking towards closer ties with the EU etc

Wait to see what happens before getting involved? Turkeys government is a bit dodgy at best. If the people involved in the coup are the actual ones in control of upholding their end of the bargain theres little we can do?

Bit rich from us to get involved because someone unelected has seized power ;p.

"The Summer of 2016" is going to make a wonderful book.

Under/over on how many such books will be on the shelves by Christmas?

Its all good...

According to Turkish media, the military statement said the army had taken action to: "reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated."

The military statement went on to say that "all international agreements and commitments will remain. We pledge that good relations with all world countries will continue."

Erdoghan fancies himself as the Caliph.

Did he really just tell people to take to the streets. Doesnt sound like great advice or someone with his peoples best interests at heart lol. Suggests hes already lost total power and last roll of dice.

A European Union source tells the Reuters news agency: "It looks like a relatively well orchestrated coup by a substantial body of the military, not just a few colonels." "They control several strategic points in Istanbul. Given the scale of the operation, it is difficult to imagine they will stop short of prevailing," the source adds.

I have family who live in Turkey for large chunks of the year, so I asked them what they thought.

"Been expecting it for a couple of weeks. The dictator needs replacing. Wait and see. Things should hopefully be better."

Guess I'll just wait and see...

It was hands down the most surreal and fascinating thing to witness in a social media/24 hour news world. It was like an episode of 24.
