Title: Possibly a daft question
Post by: ifm on February 03, 2006, 12:17:03 PM
Do i need a BT phone line for broadband?
The thing is i use Tiscali for my BB and i use it thru my BT landline, but i NEVER EVER use my home phone.
Can i ditch the home phone and still have BB?

Nope, you need the line IFM.

Perhaps when Local Loop Unbundling takes effect, and ISP's can own exchanges this might change, but at the moment you need the line.

apparently not - I have a home line with NTL that i never use, the only phone calls i get are nuscience ones where someone rings then i get an automated voice saying that there is no-one available to talk to me!!

I rang NTL to cancel the number but before they cut me off they asked me if i had broadband. I said yes and they told me that they need to keep the line connected for the broadband to work. I ended up doing a deal with them where i get my line rental for £5 a month plus calls on top, so my average bill is £5.87 a month.....

What is odd is that i know someone that had her phone cut off by BT (for non payment) but she still had her broadband.
I wasn't sure if this was because the line was just suspended or something and not actually cut off.
It drives me nuts paying a line rental i don't need on top of BB.
I wonder if i should get a GPRS card, it might work out cheaper with the added bonus of being able to use it at work!!

As a student I had NTL broadband and didnt have a landline phone of any way, shape or form. They're talking utter balls and just trying to take your money when they say you need the landline, unless of course its part of a contract supplying both.

NTL is cable, slightly different, i believe.

Yip got to agree i used to be the activation engineer for the midlands
that ment before the cable company got the the system into there hands i had to get it all up and running
the telephone line and the cable tv/broadband are seperate parts and cables of the network so you
dont need one to have the other

but i dont know the terms/cond so they might make you take both

If you use Bulldog broadband they buy the line off BT for you and dont charge you.  they also let you connect to them without having to do a contract for more than a month  and they will let you connect to broadband without the line charge or having a telephone account..  their bb speed is up to 8mb and very fast indeed.  on the minus side   their customer service is rubbish
